DH wants to sleep with the window open

Ok so I am aware it's a bit warm atm, however I cannot settle with the window open. Mostly because I have a deathly fear of moths but also the noise keeps me awake.

Aibu to want it closed?

I've never seen a moth in my house or bedroom either, despite our wide open windows!

How can you sleep with the windows and doors closed?!

mondaytosunday · 06/09/2023 00:27

My windows are open most of the year unless really cold (I don't put the heat on in my room). Couldn't bear to have it closed in the summer! No issue with moths - just the occasional mosquito.

Anna79ishere · 06/09/2023 05:53

for people living in cities, how do you deal with mice and rats? Uk cities are invaded by them and they enter if they find a window open, they also climb up floors very easily. They easily eat at nets but of course they would not enter with a closed window. I put vents on my windows so I have a bit of aeration but I would never leave them open for the fear of mice and rats.

OrdinaryGirl · 06/09/2023 06:07

I feel the same way as you about moths, but always have slept with the window open, all year round. I can confirm no moths have got in.

These were designed as cat-keeper-inners but would also work as wingéd-denizen-of-the-night-keeper-outers:

Her having a fear of moths is no more irrational than some of you stating you "cannot breathe" without the window open.

Exactly 😂🤣🤣

Reymax · 06/09/2023 07:46

During the day ours is open, as it gets dark I close it but open again when lights go out. No moths as no light to attract them.

Never once thought or worried about mice, rats or moths climbing / flying into my bedroom at night!

I have lived in multiple cities and never once had mice or rats climbing through the windows.

Why not just sleep in a different room?

You do know that butterflies and moths are the same thing.

Imisssleep2 · 06/09/2023 10:37

You aren't being unreasonable, but fresh air is good for you and to keep your house ventilated to keep away mould/damp. I couldn't sleep with it closed at min unless we had air con.

DrDaedalus · 06/09/2023 11:26

I cannot sleep with the windows closed. They are open 365 days a year here.

I hate moths too, I keep the curtains closed at night. We lived on a busy road and I got used to the noise.

LanaL · 06/09/2023 11:29

You’re not being unreasonable , you can’t sleep , but then if he can’t sleep with it closed , he also isn’t being unreasonable either. One of the joys of marriage !

could you maybe use a fan as it’s because of the cool air that he likes the window open ? And maybe have the windows open in the day so the fan isn’t circulating warm air , but then he has to do a moth check each night 🤣 I find a fan better on muggy nights as it’s warm and humid air coming in from outside anyway !

I can’t sleep with any noise or light in the room - absolutely hate having the tv on in the bedroom it keeps me awake I need complete silence and darkness . DH can’t sleep in silence or complete darkness . So he can’t sleep with the TV off - it’s unfair on one of us either way . He made a compromise of putting airpods in and watching something on his phone but then he couldn’t sleep as he was holding his phone kind of actively watching it , when usually it would be background and I still couldn’t sleep because I could hear the low noise of his headphones and see the glow of his phone 🤣 so we took it in turns . I do have a sleep mask on his nights so I can at least block out the light .

Currently , he is sleeping downstairs as he had a bad accident and isn’t mobile so can’t go upstairs. I would never say there are benefits to his accident at all but we did both joke that at least were both getting our own way with falling asleep !!!

We don’t have bedroom radiators on as we have so many upstairs windows open. I really hate hot bedrooms and our kids are now the same.

I'd absolutely hate this, I'd be shivering all the time

A fan is even worse imo, I can't sleep with the noise and the air blowing on me. I realise I am probably a massive pita to share a room with

blobby10 · 06/09/2023 12:27

I always have my bedroom window open at night but only get moths if I leave the light on for too long before I actually settle down. Definitely going to look at the mesh/net that has been suggested!

Soozy58 · 06/09/2023 12:29

Ditto re spiders. Normally have the window open all the time but with it being spider time and finding two huge ones IN my bed (one dead and one alive), my windows are firmly shut overnight. Also noisy neighbours. Fans are the way forward…….

🤣🤣 maybe so , but you can’t help it ! Sounds like the net for your window may be the best solution for you !

Dont worry , it’s the U.K. , we won’t have heat for long !

CKMc2b · 06/09/2023 12:38

YANBU I agree I sometimes can't sleep with the window open due to noise, the bugs thing is not an issue for me as I have fly screens on the windows, but also my blind flaps and bangs in the breeze which drives me mad but it doesn't seem to bother DH (I prefer sleeping in summer to air conditioning such also has the benefit of white noise (sub tropical climate)).

But we all have our preferences and your DH probably feels suffocated. So I would suggest screens, or seperate rooms.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 06/09/2023 12:49

Amused by the suggestions for screens to keep cats in. We can’t have the bedroom window open as wide as I’d like because the cat COMES in! He’s supposed to be shut downstairs overnight, but he comes and yells at our bedroom window when he thinks it’s breakfast time or wants to lie on our bed. DH won’t have him in the bedroom because he keeps him awake padding about, scratching the carpet and drinking our bedside water.

We do always have it partially open though - too stuffy otherwise. And definitely no heating on in the bedroom, makes me feel like I’m running a fever.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 06/09/2023 13:07

I couldn’t sleep in a room with the window closed, I feel like the air gets too heavy without a draft coming through so I’m with your DH on this.

Flickersy · 06/09/2023 13:15

I've always slept with windows shut because of noise (near a busy road in a city with a fire station around the corner...). It's bad enough with windows shut. For me it's a choice between a warm and stuffy room or no sleep, and frankly I'll take warm and stuffy over no sleep every time although I do enjoy the fresh air.

Not suffocated yet.

I keep them open during the day however.

Yelyah123 · 06/09/2023 22:09

Ha, that’s the opposite of us. I would love to sleep with the window open but he says he can’t sleep with the noise 😭I think he’s BU but I guess I’m biased.

Sunset6 · 06/09/2023 22:15
