DH wants to sleep with the window open

Ok so I am aware it's a bit warm atm, however I cannot settle with the window open. Mostly because I have a deathly fear of moths but also the noise keeps me awake.

Aibu to want it closed?

Can you close the window once he is asleep?

Spyral · 05/09/2023 07:56

CeriB82 · 05/09/2023 06:49

Does anyone have a link for this net, tried and tested?

im shit scared of spiders too. They are HUGE

I'll try my reply to you again @CeriB82 !

I've asked for my last post to be removed because I wasn't happy with the links.

I have this screen up at some of my windows

https://newblinds.co.uk/velcro-mesh-fly-screens-flystop-value-130x150cm-velcro-mesh-window-fly-screen

There are lots of other alternatives on Amazon but these types are all pretty much the same. You'll see on the New Blinds website that there are other more permanent & robust screens too but these cheaper ones are simple & quick to put up and do the trick if you want to stop 'things' coming in open windows...day or night.

This is the reason why some people would never buy certain houses. I need to have the windows open all the time. I live in a city but in the suburbs and on a quiet road. I have no fear of insects. And moths are endemic - i keep knits in sealed sandwich bags. Had the house fogged when we moved in & hang the repellent. I would never had bought a house with road noise in the bedroom - could have been the most beautiful house in the world otherwise.

spiders are your friends :) keep the other insects at bay.

admittedly, I would not like bats.

There was a moth in our bedroom last week. They are everywhere, I can't have the doors or windows open at all or one will get in.

Just get a net screen to stop anything flying in.
I have my bedroom window open all year round. I cannot sleep with it closed.

Enjoyingthesedays · 05/09/2023 08:03

Well I have the window open all year round so I'm going to say yabu

WunWun · 05/09/2023 08:06

Forcing someone to sleep with the windows shut in summer is massively unreasonable.

aSofaNearYou · 05/09/2023 08:08

YANBU to want it closed and he is not being unreasonable to want it open. I struggle to sleep with the window closed, it works both ways.

I'd suggest buying a net and having it open.

I have my bedroom window open all year, at various levels of open-ness depending on the weather, and it only occasionally gets shut if we are in super subzero temps or it's howling a gale. I get a sore head otherwise. So yes, to me, you are YABU. We are in North Scotland and all our windows are open tonight - it's been fecking scorching all day!

Me too. I can’t sleep in a stuffy room at all. DH complains in the winter when I still have it on the latch - he always says he goes into the bedroom and meets polar bears and penguins 😂

Aria20 · 05/09/2023 08:11

I have windows open all day but shut at night. I have a fan on at night. DH also wants the windows open at night but I can't sleep with them open:

  1. Can't sleep with any noise from outside - cars, people, foxes, birds etc!!
  2. Can't sleep with the flapping of the blackout blinds and curtains and if we left them open I'd not be able to sleep due to the light from street lights or just moonlight/sunrise!
  3. I check my room for spiders before I go to bed (of course I know some are hiding) but I couldn't sleep knowing they could be getting in at night.
  4. Scared of a burglar getting in via the flat roof!
  5. I can't sleep with anything on my face so an eye mask is not an option to block light and I can't sleep with ear plugs in either as they are not comfortable and I need to be able to hear DD!

It is a contentions issue in the heat at the moment... but I just can't get over the above issues. We don't have a spare room.

ehb102 · 05/09/2023 08:27

Sympathy. I get cellulitis every time I am bitten by a mosquito. I'd love to sleep in a sealed room with air con. Sadly, deet spray is in my life.

Have you ever considered using a mosquito net over your bed?

Brefugee · 05/09/2023 10:21

put insect screens up?

Conkersinautumn · 05/09/2023 10:24

Insect screen. Why wouldn't you let the fresher air in!

ehb102 · 05/09/2023 10:32

@Spyral Yes, but as deet is required in the evening I wear it to bed and shower in the morning. Plug ins are also awesome. I would if we had a big problem but it's not too bad this year.

Sartre · 05/09/2023 10:33

Have ours open every day, even during the winter for a little bit. Fresh air is important.

Isheabastard · 05/09/2023 10:44

I sleep with my windows open all year.

In warm weather I open windows fully in the evening and make sure all lights are off and bedroom door is shut.

When I go to bed the room is nice and cool, I then half close the window so air can circulate. I don’t sit in bed at night with windows open and lights on, as the light attracts insects.

MollsDolls · 05/09/2023 10:44

Another one here who's bedroom window is open all year round. I can't stand stuffy rooms. Took me a long while to get DH used to my way of sleeping but he now too likes to have the window open all the time like me

BarbaraofSeville · 05/09/2023 10:50

Your house must be boiling with closed windows in this weather.

We keep all our upstairs windows open in summer and on vent in winter. They're only ever fully closed when it's really cold.

To stop the cats getting out we have these

I've also seen these:

Flat Cats Window Protection Screens for Cats

Both would also protect against bugs coming in if that's what you're worried about.

PureAmazonian · 05/09/2023 11:01

My window is open everyday of the year, might close it when it's snowing (dh insists) but even then I hate it being closed.

Abeli · 05/09/2023 11:07

Highly recommend these
I've used others but these are easily removed and less sticky.

Nothing gets through, not even cats which climb on our room and come in the dormer

CaroleSinger · 05/09/2023 11:14

I think YABU in expecting other people's lives to be curtailed because you have an irrational fear that you won't deal with. Try hypnotherapy, this is your issue and allowing it to affect other people so that they can't have a window open either is unfair.

What about just doing something about the underlying irrational fear of a harmless little insect that cant actually do anything to you?

Tape a net over the open window with some gorilla tape. Job done. It's unbearable sleeping in this stifling heat with no windows open. Even in winter I have a window open a tiny bit but in summer they are open 24/7.

CoteDOpale · 05/09/2023 11:17

I can see where he’s coming from. We sleep with both windows open and a fan at the end of the bed all year round.

Wexone · 05/09/2023 11:18

CAN NOT SLEEP WITH WINDOW OPEN. Suffer bad allergies, live near a pub which can be very noisy plus am scared of my life of stuff creeping in - we live in a bungalow. For summer we had a fan for years and now invested in an air conditioning unit that purifies that air aswell, helped immensly

OctoblocksAssemble · 05/09/2023 11:20

SayNoToDoorToDoor · 04/09/2023 23:17

Buy a net for the window. They’re really cheap, you put Velcro round the frame and cut the net to size.

Then you both get cool air without added beasties. It’s a game changer.

I second this. We have extra big mozzies round our way, window nets are essential!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 05/09/2023 11:21

I never close our bedroom window, even in sub zero temperatures. Close your curtains before it gets dark and moths won't come in, especially if you only open it a crack.

You really need airflow while you sleep.
