DH wants to sleep with the window open

Ok so I am aware it's a bit warm atm, however I cannot settle with the window open. Mostly because I have a deathly fear of moths but also the noise keeps me awake.

Aibu to want it closed?

I'm team DH, I can't sleep with closed windows.

Topseyt123 · 05/09/2023 11:28

Our bedroom window is open a few inches year round, although I do close it if we get snow.

I do have net curtains on a lot of our windows which minimises what gets in.

I'm with your DH though. Fresh air is needed, especially in this warm weather.

Oioicaptain · 05/09/2023 11:28

Window screens are your friend here OP. Buy them from Amazon. Not the cheap Velcro ones. They are useless. But you can buy ones with a metal frame that you customise to the size of your window.

OrlandointheWilderness · 05/09/2023 11:29

This is the sort of thing that would flatten a new relationship for me, along with bed side! I couldn't bear to sleep with it closed at the min. And if you have the room properly dark you won't get huge amounts of moths.

Leedslucky · 05/09/2023 13:14

Ha funny to come across this thread when I'm desperately searching for hotels with bloody opening windows! I hate the trend for sealed windows Angry aircon is never good enough!

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/09/2023 13:29

We sleep in different rooms for this reason. I want them open all year round, he doesn't want them open at all.

TheGoddessFrigg · 05/09/2023 13:44

Doesnt the bedroom smell a bit... fusty without the windows open?

If you are a light sleeper, like me, I can HIGHLY recommend a white noise machine. Got one off Amazon and it has an option to sound like falling rain. Blocks other street noise, and I finally get a good night's sleep

How do you sleep on a sultry summer night when the windows are shut, and you have someone sleeping next to you. It must surely be unbearably hot and stuffy!

Na it's fine, I still have my 13 tog duvet on too 🤷 I'm always cold

Same apart from I don’t care about moths. My issue is noise! When my son sleeps through I massively begrudge being woken by foxes, noisy neighbors who work nights coming home at a ridiculous hour and banging around and noisy lorries going past… all of which have woken me this last week!

Caswallonthefox · 05/09/2023 20:20

I have a net curtain over my window, I can't abide flies. If I can't open my window I'd melt.
As for noise reduction methods, I can't use anything that's in ear, so I shove my head under my pillow. Feathers work better than hollowfibre.

This is actually a great idea, I feel daft for not having thought of it

I've got these on all my windows because of wasps and moths and they are brilliant ☺️

DiscoBeat · 05/09/2023 20:39

I couldn't bear to have the windows closed. We have them open 24/7 except in heavy rain (although no traffic noise admittedly). Moths won't bother you, especially if you shut the curtains

It's spider season - no thank you, I'm not practically inviting them in! Although may be looking at window nets on Amazon!

Also we live a stones throw from a stretch of road the boy racers like to pretend is their own personal racetrack at night - The Fast and the Feckless I call them - and the noise from their souped up crapmobiles can be pretty bad when they're out.

You do realise that house spiders don't come in from outside usually? They usually live indoors year round (behind skirting boards, eg) and just scuttle out when they're looking for a mate.
But something that might help: we don't like mosquitos and my husband put magnetic fly screens up so that the air can come in but even tiny insects can't!

OohThatLooksLovely · 05/09/2023 20:47

It's boiling hot, so of course he wants the window open. Fixing a net of some kind to the window sounds a good idea - I've got one at the back door. It was from Amazon.

wagnbobble · 05/09/2023 20:49

I had this issue but the menopause means I have to have the windows open now ) I have a blackout blind that stops the moths ( and some of the air from the open window but not all) and put on a small fan to block out the outside noise

Brumbies · 05/09/2023 20:54

Mine is shut but then I live alone and I sleep downstairs. It's hot but I don't feel safe with an open window.

muddyford · 05/09/2023 20:58

Another moth-phobic here. But my window is always open. I don't turn lights on till the curtains are drawn.

celticprincess · 05/09/2023 21:08

I keep mine closed as our street can be noisy with cars coming home quite late and more cars going out really early. Feels constant with engines and doors banging. But I have opened it tonight in the hood of it cooling down enough to close it when I go up to bed as it’s really to hot tonight!! My kids both have their windows open and also fans on!!

Brilliantreader · 05/09/2023 21:10

@SayNoToDoorToDoor brilliant idea

Rainbow1101 · 05/09/2023 21:31

I can’t sleep with closed windows and also scared of moths. My partner turns on the light outside the bedroom so no moths come to ours.

ActDottie · 05/09/2023 21:32

RushieRoo · 04/09/2023 23:16

I prefer it open all year round - I only tend to shut it if it’s actually snowing. I hate stuffy rooms at night

This love the fresh air

afrikat · 05/09/2023 22:30

Question for everyone who keeps their window open all year - do you use heating in your house? Are you not just pumping the heat outside if you have the window open? Genuine question as I often think about opening a window in winter but having spent a fortune heating the house it feels like a waste

We don’t have bedroom radiators on as we have so many upstairs windows open. I really hate hot bedrooms and our kids are now the same.

Fizbosshoes · 05/09/2023 23:15

I'd find it too stuffy with the windows closed. We have a small window open from April/May and when it's v hot like this week, the big windows get opened as well.
I sleep fairly badly anyway. I can hear next doors pond/fountain but indoor noises (tap dripping, DH snoring, cats scratching the carpet or meowing) are a lot more annoying!

CruiseOver · 06/09/2023 00:01

YABVU!

Our windows are open all the time, except in winter, as it's too warm and stuffy otherwise.

We currently have windows open and fan on at the moment - there's no way I could sleep in a hot, stuffy room with windows closed 🥵
