Minor celebs wife being rude in pub

Went to a country pub yesterday with my partner. Nice little place in the Surrey countryside, part of a chain, not fine dining. Very busy as the weather was really good, some stressed looking teenage girls trying to serve everyone. Kids play area in the garden and a bar in the garden area for drinks. We were sat on the patio attached to the restaurant.

A minor TV celeb, his wife, and another couple were sat across from us. The wife of the minor celeb complained a few times (that I heard).

First time: That one of the starters came out fractionally behind one of the others. (It was busy, there were four of them, the waitress can only carry two plates?!)

Second time: that the prawns in their prawn cocktail were inedible. (To be fair, I'd let this complaint slide as I didn't eat the prawn cocktail. It could have been bad). The waitress apologised and had a new dish made for them.

Third time: and this is the one that got me. The mains came, and the waitress went to put the plates down. The wife of the celeb laughed and stopped the waitress, and told her that "you don't serve plates from that side" aka the waitress was stood on the wrong side of her putting her plate down. She made the waitress go round the other side and put her plate down. This wasn't a silver service Michelin starred restaurant where you might expect such things. Just a standard pub.

So my (lighthearted) AIBU - do I sell this story to the Daily Mail and name and shame?

We need a clue first.

I’m annoyed about the sexist “Nick Clegg wife” thing now. Although I suppose that he is the more famous of the pair in the UK <clutches straw>

HRTadvicepls · 04/09/2023 10:21

Bet someone else will if you don't!

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 04/09/2023 10:21

If only the waitress had feigned shock and “accidentally” dropped her plates down the front of the MWA….

The point is not whether or not he or his wife were dicks, but that people tell the exact same stories over and over again about loads of different people.

Well yes, I am aware 😆. I'm always sending links to Snopes to some of my friends. Just a comment that this one wouldn't surprise me!

She was behaving badly, but I don't like the whole public shaming thing.

No I don't like it either, perhaps the woman shouldn't have publicly shamed the waitress and then she wouldn't be in the position of being publicly shamed online herself.
Probably won't like a dose of her own medicine and play the victim if it happens though.

CassiniG · 04/09/2023 10:22

I don't think she was particularly rude.

What I do find rude is staring, eavesdropping and gossiping.

A bit off thread but I saw Alan Rickman in a queue in a post office. He was just standing there looking gorgeous and no airs and graces.

snape voice obviouslyyy. I’m jealous 🤣

Embarrassing behaviour from her op, no need for it at all. I used to work in a pub where one of the rolling stones used to (maybe still does?) frequent and he was the most down to earth, polite guy ever. It’s (I’ve noticed anyway, might be wrong!!) true what was said upthread about how it seems like the bigger the celeb, the less likely they are to have diva tendencies!

Iamacatslave · 04/09/2023 10:22

You have to tell us who she is.

Whiskeypowers · 04/09/2023 10:22

Years ago I was working as a waitress in a swanky hotel in my home town during a gap year. Lots of footballers and their wives came in. A Newcastle player came in for lunch with his wife and when they left she told me “put out “‘my hand into which she tipped a few five pence pieces. He looked so embarrassed and handed me a couple of tenners. Not sure who was cringing more me or him.

That’s terrible! Like you should be kissing her feet in gratitude for a few extra pennies 😒

Hellofromtheotherslide · 04/09/2023 10:28

Ooh, I hated this when I worked in hospitality, usually young underpaid and overwork staff trying to get by in what is really a tough and occasionally stressful job, to be stripped down be a few knobs who could never hack a job like it if they tried. I used to serve famous people occasionally and can confirm that Dougray Scott (sp?) and his family, Billy Connolly, Paolo Nutini and Noel Gallagher were all lovely. Most of the rude ones were also hangers on of minor celebs (think Big Brother, X Factor rejects) the utter cheek of them to pull the better than thou card, was a source of amusement amongst the staff.

Just what I'd have expected from the late, great man.

Dogdaysagain · 04/09/2023 10:30

No one is going to pay for this without pics and video so you may as well tell us and it'll end up in the Fail anyway.
Tell us tell us tell us.

Well, he was sneery and dismissive to fans the only time I met him, when I was involved in organising a fundraiser after Anthony Minghella died, but he had just finished performing, and I can’t imagine taking someone’s off moment as indicative of their entire personality, as tends to happen on those ‘Victoria Beckham wouldn’t let me take a selfie with her in Waitrose, so she’s obviously awful’ threads about celebrity encounters.

Chippy4me · 04/09/2023 10:36

She sounds like a bitch but I wouldn’t go to the press unless it was about the ‘celeb’ themselves.

I think it’s a bit shitty you didn’t say anything at the time to her.

Whiskeypowers · 04/09/2023 10:37

He left her not long afterwards if I remember correctly 😂

Hummingbird89 · 04/09/2023 10:37

YABU to not just tell us who it is.
She sounds like a wanker.

FrenchandSaunders · 04/09/2023 10:37

I'd have dropped it in her lap ... but I'm old.

waterrat · 04/09/2023 10:40

Everyone has bad days you would be a total loser to sell the story.

Cosyblankets · 04/09/2023 10:41

Dear Daily Mail
I was in the pub yesterday and someone complained.
That's the end of the story

Nonplusultra · 04/09/2023 10:43

Assuming it actually happened why did you not say something at the time? It’s cowardly to hide behind a screen or sell stories to rags. Speaking up might have made a difference to the poor girl dealing with her. Gossiping on MN achieves nothing

Well I don't mind a bit of public shaming for behaviour like this.

pinkyredrose · 04/09/2023 10:44

Are you desperate for attention?

NotMadeOfStone · 04/09/2023 10:45

determinedtomakethiswork · 04/09/2023 09:31

You could tweet her and say she should be very careful how she behaves in public.

That is weird and creepy as fuck.
