What do you think about people who swear ?

Do you judge them ?

I swear...not every other word but when I'm upset/angry/frustrated. I find it a bit cringe when people swear casually all the time, but to each their own.

Oakbeam · 04/09/2023 10:52

Dont change the tone, theres no need

There is every need to be mindful of other people’s sensibilities.

I wouldn’t say I never swear, but if I do it’s only mildly in a fit of annoyance to myself discreetly.

I don’t swear or allow other people to swear front of my young child, I personally don’t think it’s nice behaviour to swear in front of children.

I think it’s unprofessional in the workplace too (I’m office based), and when colleagues do it it irks me a bit.

Same here. If I drop something on my toe, I absolutely will swear. And it's ok to swear at the printer :)

But otherwise, no. And definitely not in a professional context or in front of children.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/09/2023 11:02

I swear, plenty of people in work swear too (I work in the City) but I didn’t swear in front of my DC when they were young and I wouldn’t knowingly swear in front of other people’s children.

When my DC were little my go phrase was “blinking flip” which was from Spoilt Bastard in Viz.

MasterBeth · 04/09/2023 11:03

I swear quite a lot. Sometimes have to check myself that I'm doing ii too much.

As I've gotten older I've become a lot less caring of other people's sensibilities.

Perhaps it's because people can find offence in biological reality almost anything.

Regardless I don't think it's reasonable to conflate every day swearing with racial abuse. Most people I know swear but not at people. I'd be massively offended if someone told me to fuck off but not if they had a for fucks sake moment

I’m with @NorthWestThree @PureAmazonian @HorsePlatitudes and @honeyandfizz - it’s a sign of intelligence and a pain management tool, so I fucking do it with joy!

That's the trouble with swearing and/or showing anger. It tells other people that you are in "pain", that you are not in control of the situation, that you have lost the game.
It's definitely not a sign of intelligence, it's a sign of despair.

Woahtherehoney · 04/09/2023 11:28

Yeah it’s just my vocabulary. I try not to sweat at work or in front of DSS who’s 4 but otherwise I swear all the time, so does DP.

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 04/09/2023 11:28

Do I swear? Shit yeah! Do I judge others? Of course. I pick my audience and wouldn’t dream of swearing around elderly people or kids or at work. I also draw the line at using certain words do to the absence of a male equivalent that carries the same weight.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 04/09/2023 11:36

I swear quite freely where ever I am. Words have the power that you give them. They express personality and convey meaning obviously. If someone has taken offense to the way I speak that's their problem. Whether you swear or not there will always be someone who has taken offense, formed an opinion of you and your view, passed judgement, someone who doesn't give a fuck or is far too invested.

Although I swear, I do try to choose my words carefully because of this but part me does think fuck it...I am who I am.

Bingus · 04/09/2023 11:37

Yes I swear. Obviously there's a time and a place.

Bingus · 04/09/2023 11:39

And yes I judge people who swear loudly and excessively around kids. But I also judge people who pearl clutch at mild swears in a informal environment among adults.

WandaWonder · 04/09/2023 11:40

I speak the same no matter who I am speaking too, I don't mean talking politics with a new born but I don't see the point of having to watch what I say as in 'oh I can't swear right now' it's simpler to just speak one way I find

peachgreen · 04/09/2023 11:41

Yes, although I find it's more effective when done sparingly and judiciously. I also don't care too much if I swear in front of my DD because she knows what she can and can't say! I wouldn't swear in front of someone else's kids though.

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 04/09/2023 11:45

I’m quite sweary, to myself and in front of people or in conversation but not AT people.

I'm not offended by general swearing at all but I don’t think it’s nice to swear at people.

ChristmasKraken · 04/09/2023 11:51

Fuck yeah

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 04/09/2023 11:51

All the fucking time.

Lisheens · 04/09/2023 07:32

Not only do I swear, but I swear in five languages.

Same!

washingtonstate · 04/09/2023 12:02

Only when I’m driving (when there’s no-one else in the car) or when my DH does something daft…….so lots actually!

Same here. I very much judge people who swear in front of children or at work.

As a Christian I find it offensive when people unthinkingly say things like "for Christ's sake" but I accept that most people don't see it like I do.

neleh87 · 04/09/2023 12:14

I probably swear mostly in the car! Also if I'm hearing about someone being awful, I'll probably call them a prick.

Definitely don't swear as much as I used to as I'm a teacher, so I spend a lot of hours not swearing. You get out of the habit. I find it does grate when people swear excessively, but I definitely don't judge. Unless it's in front of young children.

SweetPetrichor · 04/09/2023 12:26

With DP, lots. Around anyone else or in any other scenarios, never.
Its just words. I don’t swear ‘at’ DP though - it’s just conversationally use of swears.

LakieLady · 04/09/2023 12:28

I'm a foul-mouthed fucker from a long line of foul-mouthed fuckers.

My parents, who would be 90 & 91 if they were still alive, both swore profusely and I can recall being told that I must not say "fuck" in front of granny, a particular aunt, or at school, because some people thought it was very rude.

My DF was also quite creative with his swearing. I was in his car with him once when some twat swung round a corner very fast and nearly clipped the corner of Pa's car, leading Pa to pronounce that the driver was clearly a member of the "Corner-Cutting Cunts' Club".

The DPs were both very well-spoken, and I sometimes think swearing doesn't sound so bad when it's done with a plummy accent.

OzDownUnder · 04/09/2023 12:39

Like a trooper. Always have done. My grown up children do not at all.

Teajenny7 · 04/09/2023 12:40

Swearing isn't part of my everyday lexicon.
I still find it odd that people actually write swear words lie the F word or the C word in conversation.
It is not to say that I haven't occasionally said other words in moments of extreme emotional stress.
I do find it offensive when every other sentence contains a swear word especially in front of children.
In my close circle of friends the only time I heard any of the swear was when someone nearly took us out when she was driving.
