What do you think about people who swear ?

Do you judge them ?

Yes I do but I also do judge people who don’t filter it, for instance swearing loudly on public transport when there are children around etc

I swear a little bit in certain contexts, like has been mentioned. With my DH when no one else is there, freely. Not at work, unless with others that also swear and away from other colleagues ( I find the swearers are my 'realest 'colleagues ) but even then it's not actually excessive.

I swear with one of my sis in laws if the kids aren't there. Again, not excessive. We've known each other for years. My other sis in law ( younger ) won't swear at all and often uses the word ' poo poo ' instead of shit. I don't judge people for swearing at all, but sometimes I do judge for making such a massive effort NOT to say the word shit. Like who do you think you are ?

I don't like the C word and wouldn't use it.

One of my SILs wouldn’t let her toddlers say ‘wee’ and ‘poo’. She insisted on ‘urine’ and ‘excrement’.

Yeah that's not nice. I agree, you absolutely need to filter it. Otherwise it's just gross.

StoatofDisarray · 04/09/2023 07:38

Yes, but not in front of the students and I severely limit it in front of non-sweary people and strangers. Otherwise I don't self-regulate at all, and I use all the words except the racist ones.

I sometimes play So What by the Anti-Nowhere League on my headphones after a particularly stressful public day to recover from having to bite my tongue.

GigiAnnna · 04/09/2023 07:38

I do swear but not around people I don't know well and not in front of my kids. They have heard swear words from other people and probably the odd word slipped by me and not been harmed by it but I just think it's not very nice for them to hear regularly.

ParadiseZity · 04/09/2023 07:40

I swear like a trooper. It sort of tempers my smart accent and conventional appearance.

Funkyslippers · 04/09/2023 07:41

A bit at work and home. I don't say anything more than shit infront of the kids. I cringe if I hear someone swearing a lot in normal conversation as they should be more considerate of others around them. A woman at work freely admits she lets her young kids swear and I couldn't really understand her reasoning

Lisheens · 04/09/2023 07:32

Not only do I swear, but I swear in five languages.

Swearing goals

ettieb · 04/09/2023 07:49

I would say I swear moderately normally but as soon as I get behind the wheel of my car I turn into a potty mouth. If somebody bumped into me in the supermarket I wouldn't call them a fucking tosser... but if someone pulls out in front of me I do. (I'm not shouting this out of my window to be clear but muttering to myself). When my son was young obviously I curbed this behaviour.. there were a lot of made up words instead of the swearing such as 'you fuffling twit' or 'you wonka'!!

BogRollBOGOF · 04/09/2023 07:51

Fuck yeah, I like a swear.
(I even have the literacy skill to turn it into poetry that scans neatly 😉 )

I do have a filter. I didn't swear in front of the children when they were younger, but now they're around older juniors/ secondary they hear it anyway. Going to secondary school having been drilled that it was uncooth to swear did me no social favours, and non sweary options like "buzz off" just resulted in derisory laughter, and I quickly learned to upgrade my vocabulary.

It's learning when not to deploy it and having multiple levels to express yourself that matters. I have sworn at someone (being deeply infuriating) once on holiday and travelling in close confines for days, but otherwise one of my strict rules is not to swear at people. Don't swear loudly. Don't kill the effect by doing it too much.

Every language has swear words or ways to cause offense, or make a point with words. The meaning of swear words and what they tell us about society is interesting.

ettieb · 04/09/2023 07:51

I have never been so shocked as when I was younger and went to visit a school friend who I hadn't seen since I left school.. she called her 3 year old child the c word and then flicked her fag Ash on the floor and rubbed it into the carpet with her foot.

Dolores87 · 04/09/2023 07:52

Yes alot although I never say the C word. But otherwise it's just words.

SpringleDingle · 04/09/2023 07:53

Like a fucking sailor!!

Catsmere · 04/09/2023 07:53

I drop the F bomb constantly since working in a job where it was the word of choice. The one I won't use is the C word dropped so freely here; it's the most misogynistic word, to me, and one of the few that are off-limits.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 04/09/2023 08:08

No I don’t.

I try to avoid spending a lot of time with people who swear habitually as I find it stressful.

It seems that most people swear so it is more that I feel the odd one out rather than judging others for doing what is basically normalised behaviour.

ChocHotolate · 04/09/2023 08:13

Yes when necessary, but I am also unfailingly polite with please and thank yous. I'm complex

Heyhoherewegoagain · 04/09/2023 08:15

I use fuck like punctuation

Polis · 04/09/2023 08:16

No, I don’t.

Yes, I do form opinions on those who do.

AllAboardTootToot · 04/09/2023 08:16

Fuck no! Disgusting behaviour swearing. Cannot fucking stand anyone who does!

swearer · 04/09/2023 08:21

Polis · 04/09/2023 08:16

No, I don’t.

Yes, I do form opinions on those who do.

What kind ? I also form opinions of others who avoid swearing at all costs.

I don't think it's fair to presumes that someone who swears wouldn't say their please and thanks yous though.

They're two different things imo.

Gerrataere · 04/09/2023 08:24

In general, yes. I don’t swear at people, I think if you’re calling someone a ‘fucking wanker’ to their face then it’s beyond swearing and a sign of lack of anger control.

I have children under the age of 10 and whilst I do the usual ‘oh fffff….ippling ‘eck’ sometimes a fuckty fuck does drop out. The huge majority of the time when driving as I live in a city of taxi drivers who think they’re in Formula 1. My eldest is at that precocious stage of ‘mum, we do not use bad words!!’ so of course I apologise profusely 🤣.

GarlicGrace · 04/09/2023 08:35

Bloody hell, I'm fucking judging! What a bunch of foul-mouthed cunts. Bugger off and wash your mouths out.

(I'm a hypocritical bastard.)

cushioncovers · 04/09/2023 08:35

Yes I swear quite a bit in my general conversations. Always have done. I don't swear at people or name call though.

IHeartGeneHunt · 04/09/2023 08:36

Yes. But not around children or people I don't know, or at work.
