What do you think about people who swear ?

Do you judge them ?

OP posts:
oOiluvfriendsOo · 04/09/2023 08:37

I don't swear.
I don't judge adults that do but i really really hate hearing little kids swearing like troopers.

GarlicGrace · 04/09/2023 08:42

That's a good point about the difference between swearing as an exclamation and as a targeted insult. I rarely call anyone names to their face, and even then it's usually affectionate.

Swearing about someone, though ...

travelogue · 04/09/2023 08:52

I don't trust people who never swear. It's very unnatural. Except my MIL. Because she was bloody well brought up properly. Grin

But seriously, its the context that counts. I wouldn't swear at my kid's school or in a professional setting. Not to equate professional setting with work necessarily - I learnt most of my best swear-words at work - (I was around a lot of coked up trader / city types in the 90s)

Easystuff · 04/09/2023 09:06

Swear quite a bit. We swear when we are messing about joking etc. Also out of frustration. Try not to swear In anger though. We see swearing as a kind of banta. I do swear in front of my younger kids . They are told they are grown up swear words so don't say them. Although there may be the odd slip out.

familyissues12345 · 04/09/2023 09:17

I certainly swear more the older I've got - mainly due to the career I was in (childcare) wouldn't allow it, plus my own children aren't little anymore.

That's not to say I use it in every sentence though, that's just not me, but I will use it if I'm being dramatic Grin

Shoxfordian · 04/09/2023 09:19

I do swear around my dh and he does around me; less around my parents as they don’t like it

My mum always tells me - Language Timothy although that’s not my name, I guess it’s an old tv show? 🤣

CoteDOpale · 04/09/2023 09:21

Like a sailor. No judgement from me.

ItWasAllFields · 04/09/2023 09:23

I despise swearing. I won't allow my DH to swear in front of me and the kids either, which to be fair to him, he doesn't.

Daydreamer123456 · 04/09/2023 09:25

Yes, I swear too much. Grew up in a ‘sweary’ household.

However, I’ve never (so far!) sworn in front of my children and actually a few months back my 8 year old asked me if I’d ever sworn!

There’s also people who if I’m with I don’t swear as I know they don’t like it.
Aldo, don’t tend to start effing and blinding if I’ve just met somebody

FlamingoLaLa · 04/09/2023 09:28

I swear occasionally, to myself, if I’ve forgotten something or hurt myself.

I don’t swear in front of my kids & dislike hearing people swearing when we are out and about ‘f-ing this and f-ing that’ its usually loud, sounds aggressive and it’s just unnecessary, especially around children.

As for it being a sign of intelligence…..erm, I think someone with a love for swearing made that up🤭

longwayoff · 04/09/2023 09:28

Yes I do. LOUDLY. But not in company. So, in the privacy of my own home I curse as much as I wish. It's very relieving when stressed.

Autumnismyfavouritetime · 04/09/2023 09:29

I am very sweary in my own home and amongst people I know swear too. I don’t go swearing in public or when I’m with people I don’t know well.
I am quite stressed and anxious and weirdly find swearing quite cathartic!
But I never use the C word.

Pleaseme · 04/09/2023 09:33

Sometimes in context. I work in different areas. One swearing is totally normalised. It’s not a truck it’s that fucking truck. Client facing its all charm and loveliness with no foul language.

Swearing is part of the rich tapestry of language. It’s fine away from delicate ears. I have a teenage boy and I’ve told him it’s fine if he swears with his friends but not in school/ in front of a teacher.

"Language Timothy" is from a TV sitcom called "Sorry" in which Ronnie Corbett started as a man still living with his parents as an adult. The mother character was a totally controlling narcissist & used to say it all the time. I sometimes say "language Timothy!" to people as a joke when they are swearing, they probably have no idea what I'm on about 😂

MintJulia · 04/09/2023 09:36

Only in moments of extreme physical pain or in the car on my own, where no-one can hear me.

I mutter instead😀

jellybe · 04/09/2023 09:40

It depends on the situation/ setting. I do swear but not in front of the kids they are young or my folks they don't like it.

I wouldn't have a loud Randy swear in public but so with like minded friends etc.

I do judge people who swear in front of and at their small children - think middle of the school play ground it's not needed or pleasant.

WandaWonder · 04/09/2023 10:16

I don't swear but I don't judge somw swearing but every second word swearing means I can't make out qhat is being said same with tv shows where it is all swearing

I don't judge in moral prudish way but I can't see the point

CoffeeCantata · 04/09/2023 10:21

Occasionally, but not habitually or trivially.

I judge people who swear in everyday, unstressful situations. I give them a wide berth because I think they're either show-offs (look at me, the rebel/bohemian!!) or loud and insensitive. Male or female - doesn't matter.

mum1527 · 04/09/2023 10:33

I swear to myself but not to others

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/09/2023 10:47

Fuck yes

JenniferBarkley · 04/09/2023 10:47

Yes, all the time, I'm Irish and use it like punctuation.

I never swear at people, which is a very different thing entirely.

Oakbeam · 04/09/2023 10:47

Yep..loads. it's just words.

Racial slurs are just words too. Do you use those?

For the record, I do swear, but not in situations where there is a risk of offending others.
