Canned G&T at 10am

My husband has been working long hours recently, my toddler and preschooler are in rotten moods and I need to pack for a holiday we're going on tomorrow morning. I drink alcohol pretty infrequently (maybe once a month?) but I've just been to Aldi for a few bits and impulsively bought a couple of canned G&Ts. I really want to have one now, as a 'treat' to perk me up a bit. Would that be unreasonable? I'm not planning to make a habit of it.

You’re correct, that is my position. It shouldn’t be legal.

Alcohol shouldn't be legal? Another person with zero understanding of psychology and history.
Go and look up 'prohibition USA' ffs. Actually, here you are, have a bloody read. Read about the effects and consequences and consider these in terms of complexity and nuances. Please.

I tried one of those for the first time recently and TBH it tasted like virtually all T and hardly any G. And I always like them weak anyway.
Go on, have it if you feel like it!

Featherhands · 01/09/2023 12:32

i was first on scene of a major crash on an A road where i sat with someone as they died and looked after their child in the seat next to him who couldn't get out of the car as we waiting for the emergency services.

when i got home i fancied a sherry. i was told it was a slippery slope to alcoholism. with you, and me in that situation, i genuinely don't think this is how you become an alcoholic. i suspect it's about long term day after day crutches. if you want one daily then worry. if i have to help dying people again, i'm having a sherry when i get home.

hope you enjoyed it.😁

BloodyHellKen · 01/09/2023 12:33

Personally I wouldn't, but that's because
a) it would make me sleepy and I'd get nothing done for the rest of the day
b) we have a friend who we've recently discovered has a very serious problem with alcohol. they are in a bad way as are the close family. It's horrible to see and has make me look at alcohol in a whole new light. I imagine they started out with just one drink during the day and it grew from there.

Of course YABU @BackFromABreak . Drinking alcohol at 10am is not a good look, OR good for your health and well being. Unless it's Christmas day, or someone's wedding day or a hen or stag weekend. Even when we're on holiday, we only drink in the evening, and then not every day!

Frabbits · 01/09/2023 10:40

Alcohol is not going to perk you up, and "just one drink" at 10am is how problems start. Just have a cup of tea or a coke.

This. ^

Can't imagine anything less conducive to feel perky while looking after small children than drinking gin at 10am.

I know right. Like other posters, I would just fall asleep! And you can't that when you are responsible for little children. Hugely irresponsible!

I’m already well versed in prohibition. I still think it should be illegal.

What is it with the gin posts today...

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/09/2023 13:24

It's only ok when you're at Wimbledon. Otherwise put it in the fridge so it will be nice and cold when you have sorted out the packing etc.

You'd fall asleep after one can of gin and tonic?

Does the time of day you drink make a difference to your health then? If she had it at 8pm instead it would be more healthy?

She's not proposing to get pissed for God's sake.

Xiaoxiong · 01/09/2023 13:50

I drink a lot more frequently than you do OP, but when considering your question I realised I have some pretty rigid personal rules around alcohol - I won't drink without food, I won't drink before cocktail/apero hour (I no longer will have wine with lunch as the afternoon's a write-off), won't drink alone, and won't drink except out of a proper glass.

I find that any kind of an alcoholic drink is the opposite of a pick-me-up, it's more of a "relax-me-down" so for the mid-morning or mid-afternoon slump I will turn to tea or coffee instead.

One isn't going to hurt you but as you say, best not to make a habit of it.

CassiniG · 01/09/2023 13:51

Drink a Monster energy drink instead!

OK
Bad luck then. It is. And most of us manage to enjoy it with no issues.

ManchesterLu · 01/09/2023 21:49

I mean, it's not like straight vodka is it, it's a nice tasting, refreshing drink.

TrishM80 · 01/09/2023 22:02

A bit early in the day, isn't it?

Selfraisings · 01/09/2023 22:12

Well my relativw uses to have wine at b fasr !

Sugarfish · 02/09/2023 01:14

Should have got yourself an espresso Martini if you wanted to perk up op

Lunchtime yesterday? Righty-ho.

JST88 · 02/09/2023 21:48

I wouldn’t start down that route, regardless of how infrequently you drink. One time leads to another etc etc. I also never drink when alone with the kids, just in case I need to drive anywhere in case of an emergency or whatever

Of course it is. Can't believe anyone thinks it's OK to start boozing at 10am FGS.
