Canned G&T at 10am

My husband has been working long hours recently, my toddler and preschooler are in rotten moods and I need to pack for a holiday we're going on tomorrow morning. I drink alcohol pretty infrequently (maybe once a month?) but I've just been to Aldi for a few bits and impulsively bought a couple of canned G&Ts. I really want to have one now, as a 'treat' to perk me up a bit. Would that be unreasonable? I'm not planning to make a habit of it.

I wouldn't have it quite so early. But it sounds like a one off so why not. Enjoy!

Frabbits · 01/09/2023 10:40

Alcohol is not going to perk you up, and "just one drink" at 10am is how problems start. Just have a cup of tea or a coke.

cardibach · 01/09/2023 10:41

TheBarbieEffect · 01/09/2023 10:37

YABVU. Alcohol shouldn’t be seen as a treat, that’s how you end up with problems.

Oh ffs of course it’s a treat. Lots of people have a drink to celebrate/commiserate without creating problems. If it’s not a treat why would anyone drink it at all? Though I suspect that’s your position.

WonderingWanda · 01/09/2023 10:42

I don't think you should have a g&t to perk you up a bit mid morning, that's a slippery slope. Bit different to everyone having a bucks fizz on Christmas morning or a mimosa on a birthday / anniversary etc to celebrate. This is actively drinking on your own because you are feeling flat. I'm sure it will temporarily perk you up but then what about next time? Go for a brisk walk, get a cup of something nice, all the coffee chains have cracked out the autumnal speciality coffees and then blitz the packing. Enjoy a drink together with your dp this evening once the kids have gone to bed. You will only feel more rubbish if you drink it now.

Squiblet · 01/09/2023 10:43

No one PLANS to make a habit of it. No one takes a codeine pill or pours themselves a drink thinking, "right, this'll be my first step on the road to addiction, here we go." Yet people still do it and get addicted, all the time.

I've felt that urge for an early drink, and resisted. Because what if you feel the same urge again tomorrow, and the day after?

PatsWoggle · 01/09/2023 10:43

YANBU it would put me in holiday mode. Coffee makes me sleepy!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/09/2023 10:44

On a train on the way to a weekend away with friends, fine. In the airport before a flight, fine. Round the pool on a holiday, fine.

Not sure why it feels less fine to have one at 10am at home. But it does. But actually, all those circs are drinking at 10am so I'm fine with one, I should be fine with all.

3luckystars · 01/09/2023 10:44

It’s definitely not going to help the situation. Find another solution to your problems or just go for a sleep instead.

LittleMonks11 · 01/09/2023 10:22

Have a posh coffee instead and a treat then open that bad boy at 6pm on the dot.

Agree!
Love your wording!!

asrh618120 · 01/09/2023 10:46

Try a can of fizzy in a wine glass, it will surprise you how much you brain thinks you're having a Pinot 🤣

isthismylifenow · 01/09/2023 10:49

You don't need permission to do anything OP.

If you want one, have it.

Although 10am G&T on a weekday does sound a bit odd. But life is too short eh. Do what makes you happy I say.

BakingBeanz · 01/09/2023 10:55

Can't imagine anything less conducive to feel perky while looking after small children than drinking gin at 10am.

RJnomore1 · 01/09/2023 11:00

You’re a grown up, you don’t need permission!

if it was me I’d use it as a reward for finishing packing but that’s the way my motivation works.

one canned G and T should neither make you drunk and incapable of looking after your children nor lead to immenent alcoholism. As long as you don’t need to drive.

Beezknees · 01/09/2023 11:00

YANBU. One of those tins is about 4% alcohol. It's not going to make you too drunk or tired to look after your kids unless you're an incredible lightweight. Nor is it going to make you an alcoholic. I've had mimosas/champagne at brunches plenty of times.

MNetters exaggerating as usual.

mrsbyers · 01/09/2023 11:25

I’ll be having a breakfast pint at the airport tomorrow so go for it

as an aside I once downed one of these before work by accident - mistook it for an energy drink !

and no I’ve not got a drink problem I probably have 5 units a month

BackFromABreak · 01/09/2023 11:36

I had one, stuck some music on, successfully managed to get the kids to sit inside a giant cardboard box with paint sticks for a while and made decent progress. I do appreciate the points about crashing later, I hope that's not the case. I don't know if I even feel the alcohol tbh.

Dont go down this avenue OP

Pimpmyfeet · 01/09/2023 11:46

Both of my parents were alcoholics, day drinking is a line I wouldn’t cross. Leave it until you are actually on holiday. If you need a pick me up go for something that tastes very strong (sour, bitter, fizzy) and/or something with caffeine. A shot of coffee or the ginger/cayenne health shot drinks might give you the feeling you’re after. Even alcohol-free wine/spirits in the morning isn’t a good idea IMO

CKL987 · 01/09/2023 11:50

If you rarely drink then I don't see the issue. If this was a regular occurrence then it would be a problem.

ItstimeToMoveagain · 01/09/2023 11:53

Bloody hell, a can of g&t isn't going to turn anyone into an alcoholic

ellie09 · 01/09/2023 11:55

Try getting the TRIP drinks. I've started drinking those when I am a bit stressed and there's is zero.alcohol! Calms me down loads

NeedToChangeName · 01/09/2023 12:01

Drinking at 10am seems wrong to me

TheBarbieEffect · 01/09/2023 12:02

cardibach · 01/09/2023 10:41

Oh ffs of course it’s a treat. Lots of people have a drink to celebrate/commiserate without creating problems. If it’s not a treat why would anyone drink it at all? Though I suspect that’s your position.

You’re correct, that is my position. It shouldn’t be legal.

mistermagpie · 01/09/2023 12:03

If you're usually not a big drinker then this is a bit weird, if you are a big drinker then it's slippery slope territory.

I like a drink here and there but day drinking doesn't make you more productive, if anything it's the opposite.

Dotjones · 01/09/2023 12:08

Day drinking makes me tired. Well, evening drinking makes me tired, but that doesn't matter so much since I go to bed at the end of it.

I tried to get into daytime drinking on Saturdays when I was in my twenties, a bottle of wine at lunchtime, that kind of thing. Best case scenario ended with me snoozing on the sofa by 3pm and feeling a bit rough by about 5pm. It wasn't worth the benefit to be honest.
