Canned G&T at 10am

My husband has been working long hours recently, my toddler and preschooler are in rotten moods and I need to pack for a holiday we're going on tomorrow morning. I drink alcohol pretty infrequently (maybe once a month?) but I've just been to Aldi for a few bits and impulsively bought a couple of canned G&Ts. I really want to have one now, as a 'treat' to perk me up a bit. Would that be unreasonable? I'm not planning to make a habit of it.

I wouldn’t start down that route, regardless of how infrequently you drink. One time leads to another etc etc. I also never drink when alone with the kids, just in case I need to drive anywhere in case of an emergency or whatever

Not everyone can drive. I can't drive and in the 15 years DS has been alive I've never had an emergency where I've needed my own car.

mrsbyers · 04/09/2023 22:46

All these people saying grim etc it’s no difference to a glass of Buck’s Fizz on Christmas morning with breakfast

hby9628 · 01/09/2023 10:15

Well I would. Those tins are usually pretty low alcohol aren't they?
Presuming you aren't driving anywhere soon.
Lots of people have a drink that early on holiday. If it's just a bit of a "yay we're going on holiday" type boost.
I wouldn't suggest a bottle of wine at 10am though.

Each can will be two units.

DiscoBeat · 04/09/2023 23:04

I'm still in coffee mode at 10am! But birthdays and Christmas I'll definitely have a bucks fizz with breakfast!

topshotta · 05/09/2023 00:07

redbull instead

Ericaequites · 05/09/2023 01:06

It’s after 5 o’clock somewhere in Russia.

Nat6999 · 05/09/2023 04:57

Buy yourself a bottle of zero alcohol gin & some fancy tonic.

MiddleParking · 05/09/2023 05:09

I definitely find those cans make me drunk. Probably more so at 10am.

Palmasailor · 05/09/2023 06:18

On the basis you hardly ever drink and also that it’s past mid day somewhere in the world I’d say do it.

It would be a very slippery slope if you were already drinking heavily but you’re not.

JST88 · 10/09/2023 10:01

if you want to advocate drinking alcohol when you’re the sole carer for kids then be my guest but I’m sure you’d have something to say if you say, left your child with a nanny who done this. The being able to drive is irrelevant, the point is that you render yourself less able to react in case of emergency and the bigger risk here is that it leads to alcoholism/bad habits. Alcohol is largely a sociable thing and to sit and drink alone when looking after kids, at 10am no less, is a slippery road. Just my opinion

Simonjt · 10/09/2023 10:05

I’m a sole carer for two right night as my husband is out today, I had a lovely beer with my breakfast while I sat on our balcony.

AllOfThemWitches · 10/09/2023 10:09

If you can just stop at one or two, why not? If I had a drink at 10am, I'd be drunk by midday.

Good for you @Simonjt
I'm having a bellini
Cheers!

There's a reason restaurants serve cocktails with brunch as standard. It's a Sunday classic. I might have a mimosa later. Feel bad for people who can't have a drink and stop at one but they're the ones at risk of alcoholism.

1 unit in the Aldi G&T can here. Probably why they are not to my taste as I like a healthy double (not at 10am though to be fair).

MinnieTruck · 10/09/2023 10:20

How can people think a mixed drink which has like 5% alcohol will make the OP sleepy? I have to drink like 3 cans to feel anything

AmandaHoldensLips · 10/09/2023 10:21

My favourite thing on holiday is a glass of fizz with breakfast. I'm happy not to have anything else all day!

BackFromABreak · 12/09/2023 10:05

Hi, I just wanted to reassure everyone that I've not slipped into alcoholism.

We went on holiday with a large group and I was about the only person not drinking every evening (I had 1 or 2 glasses of wine 3/7 days which felt like a lot for me, especially as my youngest still wakes in the night and I always feel a bit shit in the morning regardless).

So am I, as a lone parent, never allowed to have an alcoholic drink until DS is 18? You sound ridiculous and hysterical.

JaceLancs · 12/09/2023 18:56

Even on holiday I don’t fancy alcohol in a morning but we are all different

I'd ignore that poster, they don't seem to realise drinking while you are working is a different thing entirely

OneTC · 12/09/2023 19:06

Technically holiday drinking so it's legit

JST88 · 20/09/2023 17:16

How you were able to arrive at the word, ‘hysterical’ baffled and amused me. I wouldn’t say you, as a lone parent, should drink at 10am when you have kids no tbh. When I’m on my own with my kids I tend not to drink but occasionally if I have friends over when they’ve gone to bed I’d have a few. My point is that I think it’s a bad idea to be drinking at 10am when solely responsible for kids and I do believe most would agree

You didn't say 10am though. You said that people shouldn't drink when solely responsible for children. No times mentioned.
