Leaving a 16 year old home while on holiday

What are peoples views on this? Completely hypothetical situation.

Teen doesn't want to go on UK holiday anymore, next year he will be 16 and my mum thinks that by then it will be fine to leave him home alone for up to a week. Im not so sure and think 16 is still a bit too young.

Having a baby by 17 doesn’t exactly confirm you were a sensible 16 year old, most people would say quite the opposite

I was married at 16 and my husband and I had bought our own home and a baby 12 months later by choice , we didn't get married because I was pregnant. My own kids were left home alone for holidays when they were 16. I think having worked and saved enough to buy my first house at 16 would definitely confirm I was a sensible 16 year old. Times have changed and kids are wrapped in cotton wool and I can't really decide why. With regard to the young person in question only the parent knows if he would be ok on his own as she is the one who knows him. It is interesting that her mum from a different generation though thinks it will be fine, and she likely knows him just as well . I wonder why?

It's ok if you want your house trashed!

Flyhigher · 29/11/2023 16:36

Can you bring one of his friends on holiday with you?

haribosmarties · 29/11/2023 16:39

He will throw a party in your house. Be prepared.
My parents went to India for 2weeks when I was 16
I had a 5 day bender in their house.
Tbf I cleared up pretty well before they got back however unfortunately someone had set fire to the lawn and I couldn't do anything about the scorch marks. I feel like I'd have gotten away with it if it weren't for that...
It was worth the backlash tho. People who were there still come and reminisce with me about that party 20 years later.

Bring two or three close friends with you on holiday! Get them their own apartment.

This is amazing - what on earth was your job to enable you to have earned enough to buy a house by 16?

Are 16 year olds even allowed to buy houses? I can’t imagine any lender giving someone who’s legally a child a mortgage.

16 is well old enough yes ! He’s not 6!

So many parents baby their teenagers nowadays .

TheaBrandt · 29/11/2023 20:04

It’s very personality driven though not all teens are wild party goers especially these days a shy lad left on a weeknight who likes his gaming is probably a relatively low party risk.

We did, but she had 18 (nearly 19) year old sister at home too.

Basically we won a holiday, and their passports were in the process of being renewed. We had to take the holiday with very short notice (or forfeit going, could also not be passed on etc) and their passports couldn't be fast tracked at that point. So we went abroad, long haul and left them both at home for a week. DD1 was home from uni, so quite used to being self sufficient. I trusted them both and had friends, neighbours and family check in daily, with grandparents visiting.

I was left at home with older sister at 16, but I'm not sure how I would feel knowing they were alone, rather than together.

My major concern was being so far away and if something terrible happened to us.
