Bad attitude after asking to use the loo in Costa? Pregnancy

Mummatobe98 · 29/08/2023 21:37

I'm only about 12-13 weeks pregnant but need to wee a lot.

I went into a Costa store which I regularly buy coffee in and asked to use their loo. They declined . I said 'I'm pregnant' and the lady at the till reluctantly gave it to me, rolled her eyes and pulled a face at her colleague.

My partner felt like saying something

Am I wrong for asking to use the loo?

assuming it was the nearest toilet yanbu,

the whole point is that you cant control your bladder, so when you've got to go, you do what you've got to do

it annoys me when there aren't available toilets, for elderly, pregnant and disabled people
I watched a lady in the mall wee herself whilst she walked, a trail of wee behind her and I didn't know what to do, I had to ash the security to discreetly help her
I wonder if she had been refused access to a toilet because of how she looked

Maybe cut back on the caffeine that makes you pee more and you aren't supposed to drink much while pregnant. Water is best to drink.

ASoapImpressionOfHisWifeWhichHeAte · 29/08/2023 22:45

Just buy a bottle of water and keep it for later if you weren't thirsty then. Everyone's a winner.

Anything other than 'YANBU' seems to be deemed a horrible comment, so I'm struggling to see the point of this. You were offended that they were less gracious than you'd have liked, but they let you use the loo. What do you want from this?

Mummatobe98 · 29/08/2023 22:33

Thank you, yeah it's funny , the staff turn over in that particular store is so high . I'd never seen them before

But that’s why they didn’t let you use it as they didn’t recognise you! Our local Costa in an affluent area of south London closed a while ago but that’s because there’s a plethora of other cafes in the area.

I’m going to stick my neck out and say sorry you are being unreasonable only because when I had a bladder issue I found a department store, cafes, shopping centre and supermarket all within 5-10 mins walk of each other or as someone else says simply buy something low value. Where I was today there was a park cafe with a toilet and park toilets just across from them.

Yes it’s not nice your bladder is playing up and I do sympathise with you, but they’re running a business. And the pub suggestion is a really good idea and even I don’t think of using it.

I'm a registered nutritionist I'm fully aware of caffeine guidelines during pregnancy Hmm

Toilets are a human right etc.

Yes, that's always the argument - but so is the right to food and shelter; that doesn't mean you can freely help yourself at Asda or move into a room at Premier Inn without paying.

The lack of public toilets is certainly a concern, but that doesn't mean that it's the responsibility of random businesses - or private households, for that matter - to pick up the slack (and cost) instead.

As PP have said, it's not just the cost of a couple of squares of paper and a few litres of water, but the costs of the cleaners as well. Many people leave toilets in a disgusting state - how is it fair if they have to risk having to close their toilets temporarily and then be a staff member down, to clean up somebody's mess in an emergency (and maybe lose genuine customers who also need to go, and thus go to a competitor with an available toilet) when the offender might not even have bought anything from them anyway?

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 29/08/2023 22:56

Nothing wrong with asking, but also nothing wrong with them saying no. The toilets are for paying customers - your husband could easily have stayed in the queue and grabbed a bottle of water whilst you used the facilities.

It would have been dickish if he had said something to them.

I was actually in desperate need of the loo once, just about to get on a little boat we'd rented and knew it would be an uncomfortable hour if I didn't go. Only place around was a chain pizza place, so I popped in and asked the guy if he'd mind if I used the loo - he was lovely and said yes so I put a fiver in the tip box as I left.

Mariposista · 29/08/2023 22:57

People do love dragging someone down don’t they. Ok, OP should perhaps have bought something, as most of us would (friend with Crohns often has to) to give her an excuse to use the loo. Bit by her user name she sounds very young and is probably a bit naive and it didn’t occur (unless the 98 is her age and is a medical miracle haha). She’ll know for next time.

cloudsandream · 29/08/2023 22:57

OP: Am I wrong?

Posters: Yes

OP: Well that’s not true and you’re all mean

Every single time 😂

Rosebel · 29/08/2023 22:58

People are being pretty nasty to OP. She's pregnant, she can't help needing a wee often. Lucky all of you who obviously had bladders made of steel in pregnancy.
Costa staff were also being ridiculous, although less rude than posters on here. Why would the staff actually give a damn who uses their toilets?
I worked in a cafe years ago and technically the toilets were only for customers but we always let others use them. Rather that than risk someone wetting themselves

TallerThanAverage · 29/08/2023 23:00

You better start doing your pelvic floor exercises now if you’re struggling at 12/13 weeks. You’ll be pissing everywhere by the time you have your baby.

How do you manage that without the code?

I can think of about six costas round here off the top of my head and none require a code. Toilets are unlocked and available to use without keys or codes.

Feelinglow27 · 29/08/2023 23:10

Jesus wept. Its costa. Just use the loo without asking next time, I'm sure their profit margins will survive. Same as McDonald's etc..

Independent cafes I would avoid as yes it is taking the piss (literally).

TeachesOfPeaches · 29/08/2023 23:10

I stay away from coffee shop toilets as they are usually a single filthy smelly toilet with a code on the door. Next time try a pub, library, leisure centre, cinema, shopping centre or museum.

SD1978 · 29/08/2023 23:13

@Feelinglow27 - you can't. They are all code locked. You get the code on your receipt when you purchase. They are not open to juts walk in.

Hawkins0090 · 29/08/2023 23:13

To be honest, as long as I can achieve my objective of using the loo, that's the main priority.
I'll ask nicely then if needed I'll buy a cup cake.

To be honest the staff could eye roll, ect but when I need the toilet that's the main priority.

HollyGolightly4 · 29/08/2023 23:13

Thewizardbinbag · 29/08/2023 21:47

It’s called the “loo leash.”

A lack of public toilets affects women more than it affects men, therefore it is not a priority in town planning.

That's so interesting. Thank you @Thewizardbinbag

How do you manage that without the code?

Costa in my town doesn’t have a code, I’ve never been somewhere that does.

Coneheadmuffin · 29/08/2023 23:17

I thought it actually was the law pregnant women can use the toilet wherever ?
