To ask if Jellycat soft toys are worth buying because of how expensive they are?

My DD wants one (she wants a particular one as well) but I’m not sure if I can justify £55 on a soft toy! Are they worth the money? What are they like in terms of quality? Are they made to last/well made or are they poor quality?

YANBU - they are not worth the money

They are lovely. I would maybe buy one as a gift for a new baby, or for my child's birthday, but personally, at that price, I can't conceive of just buying one randomly

Now you've asked it'll never be the one she attaches to. That will be a badly stitched nylon one with wonky eyes from a grabber machine in the arcades and that haunts your dreams. She'll never let that one go and the £55 jellycat cake will sit overlooking her bedroom from the top of a wardrobe like a magistrate judging your parenting.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is so true. Did my little one bond with the beautiful and expensive jellycat octopus I selected? Of course not - It was the free baby meercat go compare toy grandma handed over as an afterthought which became the cherished favourite.

Comeoncarol · 29/08/2023 22:08

My DC's have the fruit and vegetables range. My DD has the lipstick and nail vanish. Definitely worth every penny. Lovely quality.

I see loads of them at work (children's hospital). They usually survive well and if kids get attached you can buy a spare if you get in promptly.

My "not-a" god daughter has Monkey. Well actually three monkeys but it took her a while to catch on. Monkey is now almost 13. He used to be very naughty and steal things from my knitting basket including the socks I knitted for another friend's newborn But in retrospect this was a good move - Monkey still wears the socks, but the newborn is now at secondary school so definitely wouldn't still be getting use out of them!

Cakewineorgin · 29/08/2023 22:22

We have several JC toys with “Moo” the cow having been particularly well loved for almost 14 years. These have always been much cheaper than £55 though. If you decide to go for it, and don’t manage to get the Vinted one, there is a very slightly cheaper one here.

I now want Fuddlewuddle dragon!

Not worth it.

RicherThanYews · 29/08/2023 22:39

@RedRosie I have him! In teal. And I have the next two sizes down 🙈🙈 Gary, Barry and Juniper Carrie.

RicherThanYews · 29/08/2023 22:41

And bizarrely, the scorpion one (lovingly named Imhotep).

VerasRaincoat · 29/08/2023 22:51

We were given a fair few after DC1 was born, a lot of fruit, a bunny and an octopus. They are streets away nicer than the other stuff animals we were given (which now languish at the bottom of the toy basket). They wash well, as with a refluxy baby they need to stand up to some rough treatment and are all very well loved friends to our baby 🥰.

twoandcooplease · 29/08/2023 23:00

I'd never heard of these before you posted op but i want one for myself now....

BertieBotts · 29/08/2023 23:16

I wouldn't spend that much but maybe I'm tight 🤷

IKEA have lovely soft toys. The jellycat ones are nice, but I'd spend up to about £30 and go for a smaller cuddlier one. That cake just looks like something that will be abandoned after very little time so I'd look at a cheap knock off squishmallow type thing. We have a shop that opened here recently that seems to be all Asian imports and it has loads of massive fake squishmallows really cheap! So I'd look for somewhere like that for a cake type toy. But you'll know if your DD would be happy with that or disappointed.

smilesup · 29/08/2023 23:20

Don't believe the hype! Honestly mine have had lots of cuddly toys that they have loved and none of them have cost more than about £15. DS1 is 17 and still sleeps with his beloved dog that cost £11.

She can save up for it if she really wants it and then will appreciate it (DD did this with a toy dog she wanted. It was begged for for months, played with a bit and then quickly forgotten about!)

VivaciousRadish · 30/08/2023 00:46

I love them, and my daughters and husband do too. A few months ago my husband brought me some breakfast

HMW1906 · 30/08/2023 01:21

if she wants soft and cuddly then the cake
one might not be. I have a flower pot jelly cat
and its not cuddly at all whereas my sons have the jelly cat bunny’s and they are really soft and cuddly

HeartandSeoul · 30/08/2023 02:07

As previously said by others before me, Jellycats are amazing! I’ve got quite an obsession with them, and have a fair few around the house (much to my family’s disgust 😁).

I’ve rarely paid full price, however. I either get them second hand (eBay/Vinted etc), or off of a website with a discount code. If you wait a little longer, I expect this cake will appear cheaper on the second hand selling sites. The other cake is lovely too though.

If you wish to buy it with the intention of selling on in the future, I strongly advise you to keep all the tags on.

Totallyterrific · 30/08/2023 02:24

Jellycat sell some amazingly cuddly and cute soft toys which are pricey but not too pricey given the quality.
And then there is the Amuseables collection which are this years fad? £55 for a stuffed soft toy cake? Having a laugh. Nope.
Surely there is something else your dd would like for her birthday (am assuming its her birthday)? Something genuinely entertaining? For £55 she could have.......... some really awesome stuff that would keep her entertained for ages. Or a cuddly cake...........
You can get some really lovely squishys in eg Clintons cards for about £10/15 why not one of those?

SE13Mummy · 30/08/2023 02:25

They are well made, very cuddly and seem to last forever (our oldest ones are over 20 years old and still look good) so I would say most of them are worth their ticket price. However, £55 for the cake? I don't think even my Jellycat-collector DC would fall for that.

If your DD is desperate for a cake then I'd suggest she either save up for this one herself which may be enough of a test of how keen she is, or opt for the smaller cake. Actually, the avocado is good value for its size so maybe take her to a shop so she can try them out.

crackfoxy · 30/08/2023 08:45

There's one in vinted at the moment for £45

Caerulea · 30/08/2023 09:02

They are gorgeous, well made & very imaginative toys that are worth every penny if you have those pennies.

I just bought my brand new grandchild a giant jellycat octopus, it's incredible & I've wanted one myself for years lol. I don't have one cos I can't afford that kind of treat - I don't have the pennies but wanted a special first gift for our GC.

daisychain01 · 30/08/2023 10:55

I expect by the time you've added postage and packing to that £45, it will be the same price as in a shop @crackfoxy but with more risk.

Cloudshighupinthesky · 30/08/2023 10:57

Maybe I’m stupid but I’ve ordered the cake for her!! Let’s hope she actually likes it when it arrives because I don’t know how soft/cuddly it will be!

She'll love it

My DD 16 has a couple of Jellycat toys which are much cuter in real life

It's a very popular brand as I found out

HappiDaze · 30/08/2023 11:24

The amusables are my favourite like the food and plants
