To ask if Jellycat soft toys are worth buying because of how expensive they are?

My DD wants one (she wants a particular one as well) but I’m not sure if I can justify £55 on a soft toy! Are they worth the money? What are they like in terms of quality? Are they made to last/well made or are they poor quality?

YANBU - they are not worth the money

I was in a shop a few days ago where they sold a big range of them. Don't remember them being quite as expensive as £55, though. They are very lovely and great quality.

One of them was a croissant with legs!

The food ‘amuseables’ range is soooooo cute

DD's only leaves her side when she's at school. She's nearly 8 and had him since she was 1. He's a bit a flat and saggy, like any adored soft toy, but still in good shape.

Ilovegoldies · 29/08/2023 19:36

I've got a few. I'm well middle aged 😳

CuriousPorg · 29/08/2023 19:38

Now you've asked it'll never be the one she attaches to. That will be a badly stitched nylon one with wonky eyes from a grabber machine in the arcades and that haunts your dreams. She'll never let that one go and the £55 jellycat cake will sit overlooking her bedroom from the top of a wardrobe like a magistrate judging your parenting.

It's my go to for a nice cuddly animal for a new baby. My DD age 9 has a teddy and a bunny that are much loved and fab quality he cuddles most nights. Not so sure about that one you've posted just due to the design not looking so cuddly, but it is pretty.

This is one of my concerns, that the one that DD wants doesn’t look very soft/cuddly and so she might not actually like it when it arrives. These are screenshots of the one that DD has asked me for

They are a lot more durable than cheaper soft toys in my experience. My son has an imitation jellycat bear that he got about 3.5 years ago and it’s an absolute state but his actual jellycats look fine.

Winter2020 · 29/08/2023 19:40

Perhaps if it's not a special occasion you could suggest they have it for a birthday or Christmas, or if they have their own money saved (e.g. birthday money) suggest they buy it or go halves with you. It doesn't hurt to gently start learning the value of money.

PocketPoL · 29/08/2023 19:41

There is new one on Vinted currently - they want £45 though so I would make a lower offer and try your luck.

RidingMyBike · 29/08/2023 19:41

Has she seen it in a shop or just online?

They are really good quality and very lovable - seem to wear extremely well too. But is she aware of how big it is, shape etc?

She’s only seen it online. I’m just worried that she expects the jellycat cake to be cuddly and it might not actually be that cuddly/soft when it arrives?

We have mummy panda with a separate baby panda and tangerine kitty. Both are very cute and good quality. Were rec'd as gifts.

Omg yes but £55 never paid that much and dd has lots of jellycat..they soft loved and played with daily....just never paid £55. Look in the charity shops as they do come up. I pay £1-5 second hand and they worth every penny!!!

The food ‘amuseables’ range is soooooo cute

My DS got an apple from the fabulous fruit range at a fancy services on our way to Devon. It’s called Appley. It’s the cutest thing ever 🤣

He also has a very drooled over greying pig. She’s called Piggy. He is awesome at thinking up names 😂

Piggy has had her arms sewn back on numerous times but is largely in one piece

Womblegreen · 29/08/2023 19:50

Jellycat toys are great. Soooo very soft and durable. I would pay £55 for a soft animal, but not for a piece of cake or other food.

DD is all about the feel of them, I think there's a sensory thing there as they have a special kind of softness. But they aren't all soft, some have a texture, DD would never buy online for that reason. I haven't seen the cake anywhere locally, so I can't even offer to give it an experimental squeeze for you.

TenOhSeven · 29/08/2023 19:51

There's a slightly smaller/cheaper cake available (not rainbow though) if she would consider that one? They are lovely but my limit for one would be about £30.

JhsLs · 29/08/2023 19:52

My son loves his jelly cat soft toys. He always has a bear or rabbit under his arm. He’s only 2 (has had them since birth) and the neck of the bear is a bit scraggly from where he tucks it under his arm. My biggest bug bear is that the label says they cannot go in the washing machine. Unfortunately, rabbit had to after he was vomited on and came out fine. But I’m not sure how well he’d fare again .

They’re lovely. When my DD was born, my niece 5 at the time gave my DD her Jellycat bunny that she got when she was born. My DD is now 5, so Jellycat is 10 and looks just as good as one my DD chose herself when she was 3.
Someone got her a cheap one from a card shop that looks like a Jellycat bunny, same size and design. Quality can’t compare though, one of its ears are hanging off after just over a year.

I have lots of jellycats they are well made and they last well. The one your daughter has chosen is lovely :)

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 29/08/2023 19:55

My 16yo just got this for her birthday - it's so soft.

I'm pretty sure that cake is the same one my DD made a beeline for at a shop, and it was very soft. How old is your DD? I could imagine the cake featuring in lots of tea party games if she's at the younger end.

Pizzanight · 29/08/2023 19:56

They are lovely and soft but I've never spent that much on one. I bought each of my DC one for their 1st birthdays but they were around £20 each and I would say a decent size.
