To ask if Jellycat soft toys are worth buying because of how expensive they are?

My DD wants one (she wants a particular one as well) but I’m not sure if I can justify £55 on a soft toy! Are they worth the money? What are they like in terms of quality? Are they made to last/well made or are they poor quality?

YANBU - they are not worth the money

I love them and recently bought Timmy the Turtle for £38 🐢Not sure I would buy a £55 one for a child though, maybe you could tempt her with a cheaper one? The little Amuseables are cute!

Serendipitoushedgehog · 29/08/2023 19:57

They’re a bit overpriced so in my opinion if you’re taking about what they’re worth then they’re not worth the mark up compared to other soft toys, but they are very cute and it’s up to you what you spend your money on. Will it be worth it to your daughter? Can you afford it? Then go for it.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 29/08/2023 19:59

Ds13‘s jellycat still follows him everywhere - including the short trip from his room to the kitchen. Considering the age of it and it’s usage, it was definitely worth it!

avemariiiaa · 29/08/2023 20:00

Selfridges have a smaller cake for £29

gavisconismyfriend · 29/08/2023 20:02

Really good quality, wash really well. I always by them as newborn gifts because they withstand the constant washing so well and are sooooo soft. I don’t quite understand the recent release of vegetables though, I draw the line at paying £18 for a stalk of broccoli with a face however cute!

SunWorshipping · 29/08/2023 20:03

My kids have received them as gifts, they are nice and good quality. I wouldn't pay £50 for that though, it isn't the nicest and it looks like something you'd give for a 1st birthday gift. There's far nicer ones.

Oblomov23 · 29/08/2023 20:04

Both my ds's had them. They are so beautiful, so well made.

Sarvanga38 · 29/08/2023 20:04

Jellycat toys are lovely in general, but what would you even do with that one? Is it meant to be used as a pillow? It doesn't look cuddly and carryable.

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 29/08/2023 20:06

DD 15 still sleeps with the jelly at bunny she's had since birth. He's a bit raggedy but still in one piece! We love jellycat and have a few.

tealandteal · 29/08/2023 20:06

I don’t have any for the kids that are that expensive but the smaller ones we have are good quality. We have a “soother” for each which wash very well (not stuffed) and the stuffed ones seem to wear better than others.

BlueBlubbaWhale · 29/08/2023 20:10

They are lovely but I don't think I'd pay £55 for one. Ours wre smaller cheaper ones

Illbebythesea · 29/08/2023 20:12

Off topic but I managed to buy 3 jelly cat bunnies at Easter from a charity shop for £1 each! They are sweet but I wouldn’t pay full price, saying that my DD’s aren’t really into soft toys - if I thought it would be well loved I would! They do some lovely designs. But the bunnies have been sat on a shelf since Easter!

Vomitcomet · 29/08/2023 20:13

Currently sat with my 7yo and his battered jellycat bunny. I think it was actually DC1s who didn’t take to it, so it’s closer to a decade old. They do hold up well, but it is no longer soft.

we have a few of them, several bunnies, and a bat (called peanut which is my favourite). I really like the new range of songbirds that I saw at a NT property last week.

I think they are good quality, and make good gifts. I generally wouldn’t buy one now as they get forgotten quickly

Gnomegnomegnome · 29/08/2023 20:15

Mine are all grown now but I still have the bunnies they had when they were small.

I wouldn’t buy a cake though. That’s more of a fad style. How old is your dd?

FofB · 29/08/2023 20:15

My youngest has a few.
We buy from a shop called Fleurtations (which is usually the cheapest online) and Jeremy's Home Stores. The cake is less that £50 from there.

Guiltridden12345 · 29/08/2023 20:15

I think the value in the jellycats is how soft and cuddly they are. My kids got them as baby gifts and still sleep with them as teens (shhh!). But that’s the animal shaped ones. The one your daughter wants doesn’t look a very cuddly shape? It also looks cheap - sorry. The animal ones are way cheaper than £55. I’d skip this one - it’s a passing fancy and too expensive. She’ll grow out of a pink cake awfully quickly.

ZickZack · 29/08/2023 20:18

Each of my boys got given a jelly cat bunny when they were born from DH and I. I love them

trampoline123 · 29/08/2023 20:22

We have the panda and bunny which they've had since they were born, so 3 and 2. Good quality, wash nicely etc and they love them.

I wouldn't spend £55 on a cake one though, seems a bit novelty.

gymgirl11 · 29/08/2023 20:25

We like a Jellycat in our family! Our DD uses them as part of her role playing at the moment and will also cuddle them to sleep.

The Jellycats we have (including the Amuseable ones with legs) all feel cuddly.

We do have a few smaller animal Jellycats and I would say they are the more appealing ones to cuddle.

My favourite ones in our collection include: a cricket ball wearing a hat, a pain au chocolat with legs and a giant giraffe..!

Sausagerollz · 29/08/2023 20:37

Ours survive many a wash in the machine and tumble dryer but then so do most.
Is it the rainbow your daughter is after especially? There's another cake that's about thirty quid on e.g. Amazon.

Phos · 29/08/2023 20:49

They're lovely and soft but I would baulk at the price too as to be fair most of DD's soft toys have lasted even the cheap ones from amusement arcades so I don't think made to last is that much of a differentiating factor with plushies.

TrishTrix · 29/08/2023 20:52

I got given one by my friend's kids when I trashed my face & arm falling off my bike during covid.

They thought I needed a hug.

It is beautifully soft and squishy and when I was feeling crap and swollen and stressing my teeth were going to fall out and that I would never regain enough strength to go back to work I used to sit stroking it on my knee.

(Yes, I am an adult)

PickledMuffin · 29/08/2023 20:56

£55! that's a lot. that said, we bought the jungly tails ball for our DD when he was born. it's still in one piece and it still make a noise after 9 years (we kept it for our other DC) good quality in my book.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 29/08/2023 20:58

Brilliant quality, wash fairly well. DC1 has had a bashful bunny since birth it's nearly 10 and still I'm great condition, considering it was used as a soother, a teething toy, the keep the bas dreams away, brought along anywhere and everywhere, in all weather, its been tossed, bashed and smashed and is still cuddley if a bit worn.

FrillyGoatFluff · 29/08/2023 21:01

We have two elephants - Mrs Large Upstairs and Mrs Large Downstairs. DD has no comprehension that Jellycat elephants cannot climb stairs, and only thinks she has one Mrs Large 😂
