Husband says I’ve signed over the house to him without me knowing

My husband often jokes that he has tricked me into signing the house over to him. He has said it for years. It’s really tedious but last night he said it again and added ‘check the deeds’. We paid off our home about 10 years ago and it is quite a valuable property for our area.

There have been occasions when I am busy working and he has put papers in front of me and asked me to sign so he can get them in the post (mainly to do with correspondence to our accountant for example).

But this is not possible surely? I mean as a married couple I am entitled to half anyway aren’t I? He is playing mind games with me and I’m not sure what to believe anymore

You need to find out the truth then decide what you want to do. Why would someone say this to their wife many times over the years? It’s a really odd thing to say if he hasn’t done it, and if he has then it’s time to see a solicitor.

mathanxiety · 29/08/2023 15:14

Talk to a solicitor.

Check the deeds.

If he has committed fraud, make sure he is prosecuted.

JennyJenny8675309 · 29/08/2023 15:14

Yep, another post and disappear. For that, YABU. Why bother?

mathanxiety · 29/08/2023 15:15

And YYY to all those who have pointed out that this is abuse.

He's probably just teasing you because you blindly sign things without checking them over. As others have said, just check the deeds.

If you have signed it over, as others have said, it is still considered a marital asset and you'll be entitled to half if you divorced. If he really was trying to be sneaky, then he's a sneaky numpty for not knowing that.

@Curseofthenation

and what if he dies first & has left it to his Bit on the side or the golf club??

Alfiemoon1 · 29/08/2023 15:17

Check the deeds

is there a back story as to why he would be saying this ?

TallerThanAverage · 29/08/2023 15:20

Does it count as being tricked if you’re prepared to sign anything put in front of you?

Zhougzhoug · 29/08/2023 15:22

You'll need a solicitor either way, whether it's for divorce or prosecution for fraud and then divorce

blueshoes · 29/08/2023 15:24

Where is OP? Hasn't she checked the deeds on the Land Registry already? Is she the sort of person who will sign a document without reading?

Baffling.

Sallyh87 · 29/08/2023 15:26

I am fairly sure any ‘signing over’ would need to be an independently witnesses signature. Either way, he sounds like an absolute jack ass.

Andthereyougo · 29/08/2023 15:28

Check. Then check again. Friend’s ex did similar, got her to sign for a second mortgage when she was drunk ( guess who bought the wine and kept pouring it) He pocketed the money, so on divorce there was less equity to split. She lost thousands.

MiddleParking · 29/08/2023 13:18

I really wouldn’t be signing without reading anything put in front of me by a man who regularly makes these punchline-free “jokes”.

This is exactly what I was thinking!

Toomanylaughs · 29/08/2023 15:30

Perhaps op is busy working again and will update later once they’ve checked the deeds.

@InternetSafe please be more vigilant in future. He clearly can’t be trusted either way. You need to keep your eyes wide open with this one I’m afraid

Loverofoxbowlakes · 29/08/2023 15:35

OP please do the quick check online. Then take some time to seriously consider your relationship. This is bullying at best, emotional and financial abuse at worst.

And never, ever, sign another document without reading it properly.

fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft · 29/08/2023 15:36

I'd call him out , tell him to stop saying it, that your checking and if he has he's out on his ear because he does indeed sound insufferable. Why keep saying it ?

Check op then you'll know.

Bowbobobo · 29/08/2023 15:40

Nobody should ever sign a document without checking it first. EVER.

It’s easy to check the land registry, though as a signature to transfer legal title to property must be witnessed as a deed, you’re probably ok.

Harder to carry on being tied to your DH I think. Who the fuck does he think he is?

ChampagneLassie · 29/08/2023 15:44

Just check land registry online will take you less than 5 mins. If true then lawyer up. If not the id be telling him you checked next time he “jokes” and ask why he thinks that’s funny

ZadocPDederick · 29/08/2023 15:50

What everyone else says about checking the deeds, but your signature would have to have been witnessed so if he's done any transfer it would be fraudulent and you should contact a solicitor immediately to get a caution put on the register and advice on getting him charged.

Also, if this is alleged to have happened while the mortgage is still in existence, the mortgage company would have had to consent and they would have insisted on you receiving separate legal advice.

On the whole, I suspect this is a stupid joke, or possibly something designed to get you worried and uncertain. If the deeds show everything is OK, tell him you know he's lying and to stop being a total twat. And please, insist on reading through absolutely everything he asks you to sign from now on.

No way

ImABox · 29/08/2023 16:03

Another vote for paying £3 for the deeds.
Then taking legal advice if he has, and if he hasn’t for a divorce as who the fuck jokes about that!
