I’ve withdrawn from organ donation register

1000 replies

Purpledogcollar · 28/08/2023 22:04

I give blood and have always been very pro organ donation.

Sadly I have just withdrawn as protest against reproductive organ donation. I can’t support it and am very conflicted as would like to donate other organs.

What are your views and is it a hasty decision (although not sure I would change my mind).

This discussion has only arisen because a woman made a living donation to her sister.

The only people dragging men into it are conspiracy theorists on the internet who are convinced trans people are going to raid their bodies.

Wrong. This discussion has arisen because Pink News released the news that trans women will be able to get uterus transplants within 10 years. We've been proven correct on everything else that is "not happening", so the conspiracy theory tag has well and truly fallen away.

Given how few people knew about the opt in/out change, I doubt it would be massive news.

Please! A man having a uterus and carrying a live baby to term is much bigger news than a dry admin government forms are changing announcement.

How convenient that Pink News can be taken as the most robust and trusted source of information by FWR when it suits, and also an insane propagandist rag by FWR when it suits.

You haven’t been proven correct. You’ve posted one article from pink news that doesn’t say it will happen, but that it might happen in ten years and that it is theoretically possible.

It’s theoretically possible that we can have a colony on Mars in ten years too. But that isn’t going to happen either.

Actually I disagree with this living donation full stop. I’m sure infertility is awful.

I do not however believe that a reasonable solution to this is to move organs from one individual to another in the hopes that this results in a child.

again, having a child is not a god given right. The ethics around this are in my opinion shady at best with no idea of the potential repercussions physically and psychologically on any of those involved including the (currently hypothetical) child.

add into that the fact that the planet is overpopulated, under resourced and basically not respected.

well, it’s a shit show frankly

They quoted surgeons. Are you saying they are lying, OR, are the surgeons lying?

Please read posts properly, I said we've been proven correct on everything else that is "not going to happen" when it came to women/trans rights.

This is another thing that is "not going to happen" that will happen.

Which surgeons did they quote? What are their qualifications and experience in this field? What did those surgeons actually say?

Here are the options available? Do we think it will be updated to separate out reproductive organs entirely? (I hope so!)

Adding the option to opt out of donating all reproductive organs and tissues would be a game changer. It would allay a lot of fears and would be an easy change to make. Why can’t we just do it now? Yes I realise womb transplants aren’t currently offered, but many many women are vehemently opposed to it and need this option. I’m just being pragmatic

ElEmEnOhPee · 29/08/2023 16:48

Well this thread has made me 100% confident that my decision to opt out was the right one. The fact so many people feel entitled to my body after death disgusts me, the language used to try and shame people and the attempts to blame people for the deaths of others because they choose to opt out means that even if clarification is ever given over the reproductive organs being used I will never, ever, ever opt back in.

I strongly believe in bodily autonomy and I don't believe people should be coerced or manipulated into using their body in a way they don't feel comfortable with (for whatever reason) whether they are dead or alive. That so many people feel happy to attempt to do this on this thread really unnerves me. I'm 100% out now and forever. One good thing I've gained from this thread is that I have phoned my parents and siblings to clarify their wishes in regards to organ donation and I will do everything in my power to ensure their wishes are respected.

Friggingfrog · 28/08/2023 22:32

Wow what a protest. Sod those who could die without organ transplants hey?

This. It seems such a shame that lives could be saved but people are so worried about a trans person getting an organ that they're withdrawing consent completely. I can't donate because I had cancer but if my lungs, heart, kidneys etc saved lives and a trans person got my womb then that sounds fine to me!

user9630721458 · 29/08/2023 16:49

I actually think there's MORE chance of scientists developing an artificial womb outside the body and growing embryos externally, Brave-New-World style, than successfully transplanting wombs into born-males.

I can imagine that, and that biological women will be redundant and phased out eventually. Robot companions will be seen as less messy and complicated - no periods, childbirth or endo to waste doctor's time!

I’m saying Pink News isn’t the most reliable source.

Do you think Pink News was being 100% accurate when they published that “Anti Trans Posie Parker Supporters Gave Nazi Salutes and Chant White Power”?
https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/03/18/anti-trans-posie-parker-supporters-nazi-salutes-melbourne/

So why do think all of a sudden that Pink News is at all being accurate when they are boasting about what is literally sci fi nonsense?

They publish smear, and now they publishing fear mongering. Do not fall for it.

The Pink News article quotes the surgeon who performed the recent transplant as saying:

“My own sense is if there are transgender transplants that are going to take place, they are many years off. There are an awful lot of steps to go through. My suspicion is a minimum of 10 to 20 years.”

I think there’s a bit of a leap between him saying “if it were to happen, it’s at least 10-20 years away” to “it will happen within the next 10 years”.

TheBrightestStarInTheSky · 29/08/2023 16:54

My late husband was an organ donar, he saved the life of a young boy.
When the hospital told me there were only 10 previous donars that year l was very surprised, l thought it would be much higher.
I am happy to be on the organ donar list, l think the ones not on the list, (adults not children) shouldn't receive organs if needed themselves.

Yes, after the disgusting posts by people here blaming myself and other women, I think have been turned off ever returning as a donor again, no matter what. I feel more stubborn and upset now. They just don't know when to quit, no doubt they are turning away women away from being donors, too.

Given how few people knew about the opt in/out change, I doubt it would be massive news.

The news that a living uterus donation from one woman to her sister has happened is big enough news that you know about it. The first successful donation from a dead woman to another woman would be big news again. If this becomes so commonplace and safe that uterus gets added to the list of organs you can donate with the standard organ donation service, that would involve an official announcement and an awareness campaign, and people would be talking about it all over. There are many stages before we get to that point.

The first successful uterus transplant from a female to a male animal would be news again, maybe not that big. The first unsuccessful attempt at a uterus transplant from a woman to a male would be massive news and there would be a LOT of public debate. If there was then a successful transplant of that kind that would be massive, massive, massive news and nobody would miss it. If it became commonplace then people would be talking about it all the time. Then if they changed the donor register so that everyone is automatic opt-in to donate their uterus to anyone including male people then that would be massive news AGAIN.

I find the idea that any of this stuff could just creep in by the back door with no knowledge or discussion by the public utterly laughable. The idea that someone who cares deeply enough about it to remove their name from the organ donor register NOW would fail to notice if these things start happening is even more absurd. Possibly people in denial about how much they are on the internet.

There have already been 100 uterus implants around the world, before this UK case came to light. How many of us were aware of that? I certainly wasn't.

Trans womb transplants '10 to 20 years' away, UK surgeon says

A surgeon who carried out the UK’s first womb transplant has said such transplants in trans women are around '10 to 20 years' away.

I too thought the eye thing was creepy but I figured I'd be dead anyway. It turns out my son may need a corneal graft. I understand that there are long waiting lists. Your eyes could make a real difference in a young person's life.

I was. They’ve mostly been in Sweden and US.
Been following the science, ethics and legal discussions for several years now.

You do know that the uterus is the only temporary transplant in existence? Which brings in questions of property & organ restitution rights post donation?

This has been and still is all about helping women with infertility who have no other treatment options.
