I’ve withdrawn from organ donation register

Purpledogcollar · 28/08/2023 22:04

I give blood and have always been very pro organ donation.

Sadly I have just withdrawn as protest against reproductive organ donation. I can’t support it and am very conflicted as would like to donate other organs.

What are your views and is it a hasty decision (although not sure I would change my mind).

Tissue donation is different from organs OP.

You don't seem very well informed about this process.

Why not just opt out of the thinga you are uncomfortable with? Plenty of people would be happy to donate their liver and kidneys for example but say no to heart. Or tell your family what you would or wouldnt be happy with as families have to be involved for someone to be a donor even if they were opt in.

The number of people who would take an organ for themself or their child if they needed one to stay alive but wouldnt be willing to give another family that gift astounds me. I think if you opt out you should be banned from ever getting a transplant if you need one.

And i say this as someone who is vehemently against reproductive organ donation.

I withdrew after my cancer diagnosis to make doubly sure that nobody would accidentally end up with my organs in the event that I met with an accident etc.

However, I think I would quite possibly have seriously considered withdrawing anyway. The reproductive organs thing made me feel a bit like I was viewed as a series of organs for other people. My body is my own.

just for your reassurance. patients with active cancer don't have their organs transplanted. not possible to "accidentally" transplant organs. there are so so so many checks. sorry about your diagnosis. I hope your treatment is going well.

Nemesias · 28/08/2023 22:14

Uterus is not one of the specific organs you can opt into or out of. It appears to be hearts, lungs, kidneys, liver, cornea, pancreas, tissue and small bowel

ladycardamom · 28/08/2023 22:14

Yes, YABU. Just check which boxes for the organs you are willing to donate.

saraclara · 28/08/2023 22:15

Purpledogcollar · 28/08/2023 22:11

When I registered, there were definitely opt outs. Weirdly, it was my eyes that I was a bit freaked out about, and considered opting out of. Then I gave myself a kick and told myself not to be such an idiot.

You're being ridiculous. Reproductive organ donation is far from being standard or commonplace at this point in medical history, and you can choose what organs you wish to donate in any event.

Where the research start, though, for 'medical history' to happen and evolve?

With tissue donation.

I think donors should know exactly what they've signed up for. 'Medical research' sounds great, and 'tissue donation' sounds great, but for what, exactly? The NHS is EDI-ed up to the bloody eyeballs and I can entirely understand women's concerns.

SuperNewMe · 28/08/2023 22:15

Ummm
You can specify what organs you agree to be used
Exactly

Flickersy · 28/08/2023 22:15

lifeturnsonadime · 28/08/2023 22:13

It's about consent though isn't it?
It's currently unclear so OP has the right to show that she doesn't consent to womb transplants and the like.

Unless you think that women's feelings on the subject shouldn't matter too much?

Then she opts out of donating any reproductive tissue and only elects to donate lungs / kidneys / corneas and so forth.

Its not unclear at all.

cryinglaughing · 28/08/2023 22:16

Withdraw by all means, why you feel.the need to tell anybody is beyond me.
I do hope you are as principled if you ever need to recieve an organ.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/08/2023 22:16

Halfemptyhalfling · 28/08/2023 22:10

You used to be able to specify which organs you were happy to donate - has that changed?

It doesn't cover the uterus. I looked as I wanted to refuse that one. They can take everything else, but not that.

tt9 · 28/08/2023 22:16

obviously it's your choice. I work in a very large transplant centre and see first hand the lives that are saved. I myself am a very fortunate recipient of a kidney. it's given me my life back.

but 100% your choice. fyi the experimental womb transplants are far far from being successful in men.

Purpledogcollar · 28/08/2023 22:17

It doesn’t give me an option for reproductive organs but what if I forget that I have registered in a few years time. Can I trust that they will acknowledge this.

Malarandras · 28/08/2023 22:17

Opt out by all means. But maybe don’t tell anyone in real life, it will make you look absurd.

Trethew · 28/08/2023 22:17

If you withdraw from organ donation because you don’t want your womb transplanted, remember you will be depriving the life-giving benefits of transplanting two kidneys, your heart, lungs and liver which could save five lives

Delphinium20 · 28/08/2023 22:18

I used to be an organ donor, but then I read more into how it works and I changed my mind. Until I can have more say over what organs are used and for what purpose and for who, I don't feel like I'm able to fully consent.

inisisle · 28/08/2023 22:18

Ah, so that's what it is.

Don't see an opting out of reproductive organs/womb

ButterCrackers · 28/08/2023 22:19

Your body is yours to decide on. It’s good you’ve made a choice you’re happy with. You are donating blood which is saving lives. This is good to do and makes a huge difference to others. I’m on the donor list but I know my uterus won’t be transplanted thanks to having a cs and also medical problems with this organ… I wonder if endo, adeno and other things like fibroids are a no to transplant.

That’s why I’m conflicted but I really don’t want my reproductive organs used and that is my decision.

Thanks 😊 The diagnosis was a few years ago and things look pretty good now, with lots of checkups. I’m sure there are a million checks, but crazy things go wrong so I thought I’d just take that little extra precaution in this wildly hypothetical situation!

melj1213 · 28/08/2023 22:20

YABU you (well your family get the final say anyway) can decide which organs are donated and which aren't so surely you just opt out of donating your reproductive organs?

I'm happy for someone to make use of any viable organs if it means someone else can have a longer and happier life, if I didn't want a certain organ being donated then I would just say no to that specific organ rather than withholding them all ... Why deprive 30yo Steve the chance to see his kids grow up by withholding my kidney or stop 21yo Laura from getting the chance to live her life outside a hospital room by withholding my heart just because I don't want someone having another organ?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/08/2023 22:20

When I first registered decades ago it was on the basis that I would donate anything but reproductive organs/tissue because at the time I was concerned about ovaries/ova being harvested

Ohthatsabitshit · 28/08/2023 22:20

I think I’d be less worried about wombs and more worried about testicles and ovaries.

Don't see an opting out of reproductive organs/womb

This is because reproductive organ transplants are still in an experimental stage and are vanishingly rare.

They are not standard. There is no waiting list for a womb.

Your body is not going to be raided for your uterus or your testes (delete as applicable) when you die.
