I’ve withdrawn from organ donation register

I give blood and have always been very pro organ donation.

Sadly I have just withdrawn as protest against reproductive organ donation. I can’t support it and am very conflicted as would like to donate other organs.

What are your views and is it a hasty decision (although not sure I would change my mind).

I'm all in favour of organ donation.

However, I won't be donating mine as I've signed up to donate my body to medicine instead. It will be going to a hospital that performed life-saving surgery on me a couple of years ago, and I'm humbled to be able to give something back to help with medical studies. And the bonus is that once they've done with my body they cremate it, saving my family a lot of money!

Does the opposite also stand, you would refuse transplant due to the policy, and prefer to die?

Yeah this

Reading this thread has made me get up and kiss the heads of my two beautiful babies and then say a little prayer to the angel who gave me a kidney and allowed me to become a mother

I'll make sure to let my friends in the community still waiting to remove the ticking clock of death from over their heads that the possibility of a non existent uterus transplant is the reason people are now opting out. Madness

HappyHolidai · 29/08/2023 05:54

I simply cannot understand the mentality of people whose hatred of a tiny minority drives them to deny a life-saving option for so many more. It's tragic: every person dying on the transplant list is a tragedy. It can't always be avoided: people on the list are very unwell.

How can you be so cruel? You believe in organ donation but will let others die for your hatred of a tiny minority of men. Have you begun to think what that means for those who will die because of your choice?

No one wants to be an organ donor: the donor's death is a tragedy; but it's one from which good can come. Please: just tick the boxes for the specific organs you want to donate, so that if the worst happens you have the chance to leave a legacy of life.

Username1107 · 29/08/2023 06:00

Once there is an option to specifically opt out of this, then I will go back on the register. Otherwise it won't be happening.

Unfortunately some people are so small minded and not willing to help others. Thankfully my friends and family have all opted in for any of our organs to be used.

Scoobydoobywho · 29/08/2023 06:02

Would those agreeing with the o.p not want to receive organ donation either for themselves or a dependent.

Vegetus · 29/08/2023 06:04

Can take what they want from me. I won't have any use for it.

Meadowdog · 29/08/2023 06:07

As someone who's just been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease I'm absolutely sickened by this thread. How incredibly cruel and small minded do you have to be to do this? And yes I hope the reverse is true for anyone opting out of donating - that is you'd also refuse to take an organ (but of course if it came down to it you wouldn't).

Username1107 · 29/08/2023 06:08

I also wouldn't donate eggs, or support / be a surrogate. This is no different.

MariaPurito · 29/08/2023 06:09

I can't add this to the things I'm going to worry about. They can take my organs, my family know my wishes. If my left over parts can save or transform a life, that's enough for me to remain a donor. A person who would die waiting on an organ won't do so because of me.

Also wondering this

ElEmEnOhPee · 29/08/2023 06:15

Of all the people who are attempting to shame others for choosing to not donate how many of you donate all your spare money each month to a charity that saves lives? If you do not do this then why? Is it not selfish to hoard your money when it could be going to save people?

I agree wholeheartedly.

moomoosaka · 29/08/2023 06:19

This thread has prompted me to make sure I'm signed up, last time was over 10 years ago - I've registered online and there is an option to choose which organs you are willing to donate.

Reproductive organs isn't on there.

So rather than opting out you can just register which organs you are willing to donate.

There is an option to say yes - these organs and no - not those

Username1107 · 29/08/2023 06:21

There's not an option for that.

moomoosaka · 29/08/2023 06:22

JaukiVexnoydi · 29/08/2023 05:19

Yabu - it's very easy to change your registration from 'any part of my body" to specifying which organs you are happy to donate. You can tick for heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, corneas etc but don't tick the all-encompassing "tissue" and then know that only those organs would be used and your reproductive organs are off limits. Make sure your NIK know your wishes.

This! Just done it to make sure mines up to date as I've moved a bit and changed name.

It's so easy to do

moomoosaka · 29/08/2023 06:23

Username1107 · 29/08/2023 06:21

There is! I've just done it. There's a drop down and it says these organs - yes or no. I've just opted out of donating my liver for complicated reasons I won't go into that means no one will want it anyway but I don't want it to be considered a possibility.

moomoosaka · 29/08/2023 06:28

Only those organs and tissue specified by the donor and agreed with the family will be removed.

This is under the FAQ.

This thread makes me so sad. Someone could die when they could be saved as a result of people opting out when they don't understand the system.

Username1107 · 29/08/2023 06:28

There isn't an option for that. I don't want it to be presumed consent, as it currently stands, until there is a clear option to opt out. But great that this thread has got lots of people to confirm their choices either way. Although it already is a presumed opt in unless you specifically said otherwise anyway.

You could just specify the organs you are willing to donate though.

thedancingbear · 29/08/2023 06:40

YANBU. You have bodily autonomy and can opt out for any reason you want, including transphobic paranoia.
