I have a couple from my visit this morning.

Woman who always turns up to spin class in full makeup and delicately dabs at her face to avoid smudging said makeup, whilst the rest of us are literally sweating out of their eyeballs with no care for what they look like.

Man in same class who wears that weird semi topless cycling suit thing with his sweaty chest hair in full view 🤮

Tell me yours?

See also, teachers who turn a blind eye to the newbie struggling.

SomeCatFromJapan · 28/08/2023 09:48

@Minesril omg yes this! Do they think the women in the group are going to be impressed or something? I actually get quite grossed out at some of them.

mondaytosunday · 28/08/2023 09:53

Usual stuff: the unnecessary loud grunts from (usually men) when lifting weights or in class. Hogging equipment, not returning equipment, not wiping off their sweat. Misuse of equipment, and slamming down weights.

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/08/2023 10:03

I hate the ‘uniform’ of crop tops and hot pants that 90% of the females wear in my gym, and the selfie-like posing in front of all the mirrors that accompanies them. This includes posing quite provocatively, pulling down the crop top and pulling up the leggings/thong underneath them, and having your friend take the photo.

Arse crack leggings.

The women who labour over tying their hair up, and releasing it several times, before they finally do it, and it looks exactly the same as first time around. Also, the constantly hair flicking and touching of hair, usually in a mirror, by many younger women with long hair.

All the selfie taking/friends taking photos of those harder to reach areas, such as arses. No photography should be allowed in gyms!

The men who sit on the machines leering at women, watching practically every woman walk by instead of actually using the bloody machines. When I actually go to the gym, I go there to exercise, and I do not want to be stared at at any point in my time there.

The cave men-like air around the weight area. Even my Husband hates this, and actively avoids doing weights until the numskulls empty out a bit, and he tried to go at times where there will be less of them.

Standing around talking about exercising/intensity of machines/what you’re going to do/what you’ve done. Just get on with it or go home.

LetMeGoogleThat · 28/08/2023 10:05

Taking over the whole weights section and just sitting there for ages on the bloody phone.

iamthattree · 28/08/2023 10:33

Ohhhh I do the slow walking thing! But I have a sore Achilles and it needs a gentle warm up/stretch plus I only do it for 5/10 mins and only when there are loads of free machines.

Our gym is pretty good - even the free weights area is fairly welcoming. I count myself lucky!

Superlegs · 28/08/2023 10:44

In answer to people that don’t like seeing people walking on the treadmill.
I used to just walk on the treadmill, because I was terrified of running on it. I had visions of falling off the back because I couldn’t keep the pace and being unable to stop the bloody thing, it took me years to build up courage to run on it. Seems silly looking back, but it was genuine fear.

VeloVixen · 28/08/2023 11:03

Saschka · 27/08/2023 23:13

If they are actually running, fine. The ones who piss me off are the ones who walk, slowly, for an hour or so. Why go to the gym just to walk? You could just walk to the shops, or round the park (and yes I know you can also run to the shops and around the park, and I do, but if I’m running on the treadmill I’m usually doing speedwork or something where the ability to monitor my speed and time is useful, or just doing a quick 10min warm up before doing weights. Not hogging the treadmill for an hour to go for a walk).

In fairness they could have injuries, etc. I can no longer run due to a chronic, deteriorating muscle condition. Walking may save my life. Walking at a constant speed on a slight incline means I’m not slacking and again could mean it saves my mobility and avoid a wheelchair Too easy to amble outside. Plus it might be dark, cold, wet. 🤷‍♀️

Nevermind31 · 28/08/2023 11:04

Why?

Pleaseme · 28/08/2023 11:08

Opening the windows. It has air conditioning. Most I’ve ever seen is six other people so it’s hardly packed.

LadyDanburysHat · 28/08/2023 13:42

This thread popped into my head today when I was in the gym and both of the people who irrationally annoy me were in. Firstly late teens lad with long hair mid way down his back who never ties it back and spends the whole time flipping it about.

And then the older man on the treadmill who hangs onto the top of the screen for dear life, swapping hands every so often. If you need to hold on, just slow the damn thing down. Or if you want to hold on, then hold onto the handles that are at waist height for that very purpose.

AussieManque · 28/08/2023 15:01

@Pleaseme open windows in a gym is a good idea, especially now with covid on the rise. Exercise gets people breathing heavily. Perhaps someone has a CO2 monitor and is keeping an eye on levels, and ventilating to reduce the risk for everyone. Plus helps with smells!

feemcgee · 28/08/2023 15:46

The people who keep chatting to each other at the start of a class when the instructor is trying to talk to us all, it's so rude.

WeetabixTowels · 28/08/2023 15:49

People (let’s face it: men) who decide to set up their own mini circuits but occupy a machine. So they use a machine then set up dumbbells and a mat next to it. So despite the fact they’re only using the machine 1/3 of the time of their exercise, you can’t go on it.

Sweaty arse juice not being cleaned off machines. I don’t give a shit and I find people who used it (if I know who they are) and tell them to clean it now.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 28/08/2023 16:10

@misssunshine4040 no, she's just an arse.

Curiouscat101 · 28/08/2023 16:17

bjjgirl · 28/08/2023 16:20

Ok to unpick some stuff:

Phones / resting between sets on equipment
You should rest between sets so playing on your phone is how some people occupy the 1-5 minute rests

Multiple dumbells or stations

May be needed for super sets where you do one movement immediately followed by another - for example shoulder press then dip

Make up / perfume- irritating but if it means they work out it's not really a problem

Photograph or videoing of movements
This could be done to check form for an online trainer

To be fair if you struggle to get on equipment then that's really a short coming of the gym, maybe trade up?

If you don't like working out in the gym your in try others - a body building back street type gym may suit a lot of people better than a pure gym or hotel spa gym

SocksAndTheCity · 28/08/2023 16:30

I'm afraid I very occasionally do the retying-hair thing @SprinkleOfSunak , but it's only ever because I've managed to pull one single hair very tight when I'm fastening it up and it's painful (and I can never find it to loosen so have to start again).

I am unreasonable about my locker because I hate it if somebody else has already got it when I arrive, even though it isn't actually 'my' locker but it's the one I like. If I have to use a different one I forget where my stuff is.

Men doing butterfly stroke right up the middle of the 20m pool when other people including me are trying to swim. Also the sweaty bloke who was in front of me in spin class a week or so ago who forgot to put on underpants below his very thin yellow shorts 🤮

I do love my gym though. It being adults only and zero tolerance for bitchiness and twattery helps.

SocksAndTheCity · 28/08/2023 16:33

Oh and I also take two sets of dumbells and often a kettle or two, but that's because I don't use the same weights for lower body as I do for overhead stuff and I like to move through my workout without having to keep going back to the shelves. If there was only one of each I wouldn't Smile

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/08/2023 16:39

@SocksAndTheCity

🤣 I’m sure even I do it sometimes (hypocrite here!). It’s just when women do it in a way that seems to be provocative or is attention seeking - flirtatiously maybe.

Curiouscat101 · 28/08/2023 16:43

Here’s an idea. Why don’t we all mind our own business and unless something directly impacts you at the gym, ie someone taking unreasonable long on a piece of kit, then don’t feel the need to make comment

Curiouscat101 · 28/08/2023 16:43

Gym’s are meant to be safe spaces for everyone

SomeCatFromJapan · 28/08/2023 16:45

@Curiouscat101 AIBU would be a ghost town if everyone did that 😄

TheGreenSketch · 28/08/2023 16:51

People who do a set on a machine and then sit for 5 mins on their phones before the next one. There’s one guy at my gym that makes my heart sink because if I mis-read his circuit I’ll have to wait 10/15 mins at end to do my last machine.

bjjgirl · 28/08/2023 16:54

My main gripe is people commenting on my physique / workout / strength / bruises when I don't know them
