Things that unreasonably wind you up about people at the gym

I have a couple from my visit this morning.

Woman who always turns up to spin class in full makeup and delicately dabs at her face to avoid smudging said makeup, whilst the rest of us are literally sweating out of their eyeballs with no care for what they look like.

Man in same class who wears that weird semi topless cycling suit thing with his sweaty chest hair in full view 🤮

Tell me yours?

I’m feeling quite relieved. Not much of this goes on at my gym except the posing photos and they don’t really bother me. (It’s that kind of space).

I do really dislike the flesh coloured gym gear trend though.

The exercise class cliques. Usually found in more choreographed classes. Grown women confusing a Zumba class with a West End musical audition.

Oh, the fangirling around the teacher afterwards as well. Just embarrassing.

I’m not talking about people asking for feedback or clarification, this is a group of 2-3 regulars, in every yoga/barre/pilates class, who crowd round the teacher at the end of every class, elbows out, competing to see who can be her bestest friend ever.

Nugg · 27/08/2023 23:44

Grunting from either gender and also young men with bright white trainers who bounce when they walk. I can't explain it. You'll know the type. Half a bicep going on and chicken legs

Floofydawg · 28/08/2023 00:04

Chicken legs 😂

Girls making videos of themselves working out with the whole tripod set up 🥱

Findyourneutralspace · 28/08/2023 00:07

The guys who sweat buckets in circuits and leave a puddle when you get to the station after them. Flipping the mat to get a dry bit is nasty.

And also - put your weights back!!

Findyourneutralspace · 28/08/2023 00:12

Disney dads who take their kids to the pool on Saturday afternoon and don’t actually supervise them. I had to tell a 4 year old that no, it’s not OK to pour your Fruit Shoot in the pool, the other day, while his dad stood and watched.

Madeinessex · 28/08/2023 05:03

And the one person who smells of BO BEFORE the class has even started, the rank stinky stale BO, which makes we think they haven’t washed their gym gear after the previous workout 🤢
Just to be clear it’ll be the first class of the day and the gym opening time, so, no I don’t believe it’s their second class of the day, and neither do they run there.

Just grim.

floribunda18 · 28/08/2023 05:22

I think mine are quite rational. People spending forever on one piece of equipment. Even worse, someone working with a partner and taking even longer.

People using the leg raise machine as a comfy seat. One lad was sat there without using the machine, on his phone while I did ten minutes on the cross trainer and two other lots of weights.

People hogging two lots of equipment at once. On guy was alternating between the mat doing abs and using the leg raise, leaving his drinks bottle on the leg raise machine. I only had that to go so quite reasonably went on it while he was on the mat. He immediately jumps up to tell me off for using the machine he was still using. I asked him how on earth he could be using the leg raise while he was on the mat and made him wait until I had finished my sets. Dickhead.

floribunda18 · 28/08/2023 05:25

I sometimes have make up on in the gym because I've put make up on earlier in the day, I haven't put it on especially for the gym. If that bothers you get a life, frankly.

AussieManque · 28/08/2023 05:53

People who walk super slowly on a treadmill, like slower than they would be walking outside.

And during yoga classes, I cannot stand it if mats are not laid out parallel, not only to each other, but also to any markings on the floor. It throws me off if there is wonkiness between my mat and other straight lines and I'm trying to line up my body in warrior. And when the room is relatively empty and someone puts their mat super close to you, to the extent that when you stretch your arms out you touch them. In fact, yoga classes where there isn't room for everyone to stretch out without touching each other are clearly oversubscribed and should be limiting attendance!

MiddleParking · 28/08/2023 06:50

Christ this makes me glad to exercise at home/outside and not have been to a gym since I was at school. It sounds like gyms are mostly populated by inconsiderate arseholes and the rest by women who hate other women just for existing. None of that in my living room!

RantyAnty · 28/08/2023 06:50

People

Floofydawg · 27/08/2023 17:00

Ahhh, yes to all those! Also the girl who talks on her phone whilst running on the treadmill. For the whole half hour.

Oh god we have one of these! My gym plays quite good music, and I quite like to listen to it whilst I'm training, but there's a girl who talks on her phone (sometimes on headphones and sometimes on flippin loudspeaker!) as she walks on the treadmill! There's also a guy who wears those huge noise cancelling headphones so is totally unaware of anything going on, who sings (tunelessly, and not always with the right words...) along to his music.... 😂
(Saying that I tend to live and let live as I suspect my sweaty gasping and cursing probably annoys everyone else 😂🥵)

Once, in the sauna there was a woman who was butt naked shaving

I promptly left

Undecicive · 28/08/2023 07:21

@YeOldeBuxomWench Could she have been practising Capoeira? A young friend used to do it, it looked totally random.

Random789 · 28/08/2023 07:23

I'm a ragey kind of a person these days, but this thread has mae me realise that I never feel wound up by anyone at the gym. They just all seem like nice people.

I think that might be testimony to the fact that exercise improves my mental health. I feel more chilled when I am challenging my body, and less likely to get consumed by irritation.

Oh, except in the poolside area (where I am not working out, just melting myself to nothing in the sauna and steam room). I do get ragey there about 'the spa people' - people who aren't gym members but come for a massage and use of the pool area. They open wide the sauna and steamroom doors, have a good look around, leave the door open for their mate to come in too, shut it when remided, then open it wide again 30 secs later when they decide the room is not for them.

borntobequiet · 28/08/2023 07:53

People who use the rowing machine without knowing how to use it properly, inevitably on the highest setting so they risk injury.

It was a class very first thing in the morning.

I put makeup on to go to the gym. Not loads but powder and mascara. But then it is a weight lifting gym so I don't sweat it all off. I just like looking presentable 😂

DustyLee123 · 28/08/2023 08:38

There’s a new woman who uses the weights but leaves them strewn around the weight bench area, because she goes off to use a machine but is coming back to use them.

Minesril · 28/08/2023 09:09

I do Caroline Girvan at home. I'm on her Facebook page and I get very annoyed when blokes post topless photos on there.

I don't need to see your sweaty hairy chest, that's why I workout at home.

You are nowhere near as ripped as you think you are.

This is a space where predominantly women post. Why can't you go somewhere else on the internet? There must be literally millions of groups dedicated to men's exercise.

Spottywombat · 28/08/2023 09:12

Saw a woman sitting on the locker room benches without any clothes on, minging. I've never sat on a gym bench since without thinking about it and try to avoid them now.

It's safer to drop weights if it's an olymic lift but I never did but don't mind others doing so.

Cyclingmug · 28/08/2023 09:15

Floofydawg · 28/08/2023 08:26

It was a class very first thing in the morning.

So? I would always wear make up to the gym even first thing as I wear make up everywhere 🙅

Teachers who delay the start of a class for a couple of minutes as they know regulars are on their way up.
