My lovely neighbour (rented property) told me on moving in that she works nights as a HCP. This is borne out, as far as it goes - she’s clearly out overnight but only for 1-2 nights per week.

In the meantime I’m pretty sure she’s running a commercial kitchen from her home, and making her living mostly from this.

Are there any circumstances where this is ok? I don’t want to knacker her income stream but equally I’m a bit worried about vermin (lots of evidence of food prep outside in the garden).

OP posts:
Illbebythesea · 25/08/2023 21:15

And I’m a bit of a coward and don’t like confrontation.

Well that’s handy for you because that’s the exact sort of person who reports their lovely neighbour to the council 🤡

Neilsfavouritechilli · 25/08/2023 20:45

This is so random it has to be a reverse surely.

No, people like OP really do exist.

Shame your lovely neighbour doesn’t have a lovely neighbour herself.

Vermin? Sounds like an ideal excuse to get a cat. 😀

YANBU at all. MN is notoriously disgusting when it comes to what they say about food hygiene. I suspect IRL none of them would put up with this and certainly not eat from some two bit backyard burger bar but I think some people on MN are weird about food hygiene because they fancy themselves as chefs making ketchup/jam once a year and dreaming of selling it without having to get a pesky rating from the council to check they're actually washing their hands after going to the toilet.
Report to council. Ignore hypocritical dickheads.

Viviennemary · 25/08/2023 21:18

If it bothers you then report her. I bet her landlord doesn't know. Food waste in a garden - not on. I wouldn't raise the issue with her not worth the hassle.

lljkk · 25/08/2023 21:20

OP's hobby is fantasies like this one...

Moonwatcher1234 · 25/08/2023 21:20

ClaraBourne · 25/08/2023 21:04

Jesus. The replies on here. The reasn why councils inspect food premises is because people can get very sick or die from unclean premises.

I bet you'd all be shouting if your mother / sister / child got ill from food prepared in unregulated premises. I can see the headlines now 'Neighbours were concerned but did nothing'. And the outrage.

I think the genuine query is why doesn’t OP just speak to her neighbour rather than, say, look to report her. The latter seems a drastic and unkind step - surely if you get on with your neighbour you would want to resolve this (if it is even genuinely a problem) rather than landing her in a heap of trouble.

sonicmum2002 · 25/08/2023 21:21

If there's food waste in the garden YANBU, this can attract vermin.

Miyagi99 · 25/08/2023 21:22

devildeepbluesea · 25/08/2023 20:26

No idea. Smells great though, I’ll give her that.

Yeah, no one is going to complain if it’s meat and two veg, ‘smells’ mean OTHER smells.

Given that it has rained nearly every day for most of August how is she managing to time the outdoor food prep between the showers?

Maybe she's washing her salads in the deluge?

Because you are not supposed to prepare food to sell in a bog standard kitchen. A friend of mine had to turn they're front room into a commercial kitchen to be able to do outside catering. Everything had to be stripped back and checked by food standards. Work surfaces and storage have to be stainless steel and has to be hygiene rated. She should also have a commercial bin. Because she will have more waste than the average household then there wouldn't be food waste in the garden attracting vermin.

Well OP doesn't need to eat it.

MN is also notoriously full of busy bodies constantly wanting to 'report' people.

I think you mind your own business tbh. Does she have a compost heap? Is she leaving scraps of food just strewn about? I think you're overly interested in her business tbh. If you see vermin then I'd have a word with her.

Cooked food doesn't belong on a compost heap. only veg peelings

ClarkWGriswaldd · 25/08/2023 21:25

I take it everyone on this thread would be happy to eat food prepared in someone's back garden? Yes?

Of course your bloody wouldn't.

I mean imagine if I'd started the following thread ...

'I have set up a business! I'm making food for people and selling it. I don't have a hygiene certificate and I prepare a lot of the food in my garden and leave food about outside. Would you buy from me?'

Because that's the exact same scenario being described.

Have you never been to a barbecue?

Most people get through life without taking every little issue to MN to consult on.

The obvious reaction from most people in this situation, with a ‘lovely’ neighbour, would simply be - to go and speak with the neighbour.

So incredibly obvious to most people.

Purpleplace · 25/08/2023 21:26

I am literally begging you to tell us what kind of food prep is occurring in the garden

PuddlesPityParty · 25/08/2023 21:27

devildeepbluesea · 25/08/2023 20:27

You do know you can search this?

It’s not a rating she needs - they’re not compulsory FYI (at least do a quick google before making a thread deary me).

You do need permission from the LA and a few other things though.

CrazyArmadilloLady · 25/08/2023 21:28

From posting after every other reply, the OP now seems to have disappeared from the thread….

ClarkWGriswaldd · 25/08/2023 21:29

@TeaKitten yes. What's your irrelevant point? Last bbq I went to I ..

Didn't pay for the food
Wasn't attending in the capacity of customer
Didn't have to think about how the food was prepared or where it was prepared because .. I wasn't a customer

What a stupid comment to make

CaramelicedLatte · 25/08/2023 21:29

OP:"I am genuinely unsure if I am being unreasonable"
MN: "You are"
OP: "NO I'M NOT"

Peak MN.

I can totally see your concern tbh. I think other posters aren’t seeing the bigger picture on this. This kind of unregulated food prep shouldn’t be normalised.

On the other hand, if she’s financially precarious, you could be bringing a world of suffering and hardship to one individual if you report her.

I’d be compassionate (but maybe log some notes in case things worsen, eg vermin).

It’s what the government is pushing us up to do: turn us against the people around us and blame them for tiny infractions, when the Tories have systemically fucked up and troughed out the country to the tune of billions.

This kind of unregulated food prep shouldn’t be normalised.
