Tuna melt… wrong?

AIBU to think a tuna melt just sounds wrong!
Hot fish and cheese? Who does this?
part of me wants to try one in case I’m missing out, but I think I might well puke…
what are your opinions?

They're the best. Ideally with spring onions or red onions, and goats cheese as the cheese.

AMessageToYouRuby · 23/08/2023 23:12

I also rate tuna on pizza highly, ideally with black olives and red onion. A sort of italian carby bastard version of salad nicoise.

PickAChew · 23/08/2023 23:14

They are delicious but I don't eat them because the cheese, being cheese, makes me puke.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2023 23:18

If you're making them in a bagel, you need a slice of a firm tomato to block up the hole and prevent the filling oozing out.

The Bagel Factory used to do a bagel with tuna, red onion, Swiss cheese, peppadew peppers and sweet chilli sauce. It was amazing and I still miss it. I can taste it now.

That was where I had my first tuna melt..,

LadyGAgain · 23/08/2023 23:34

You're not wrong OP. DISGUSTING Grin

both the Starbucks and cafe Nero ones are delicious. if making at home... layer whole wheat chunky break with mayo, grated cheese (I use mozzarella) and spring onions. I add a bit of lemon zest and sliced fresh jalapeños for extra kick. it's my emergency too tired to cook food. and kept me alive through uni days.

BrunchBunch · 23/08/2023 23:44

I like it with red leicester cheese.

Mini tin of tuna, squirt of mayonnaise, pepper, maybe a bit of dill if I have it. Plop it on bread, or even just on a bit of foil on a baking tray to do without bread, and then layer on slices of red leicester and grill until melted.

Tuna melts are amazing but they need red onion, and preferably peppers too.

I still remember being in a sandwich shop and having my first tuna cheese and onion sandwich (not a melt though). I was sceptical.at first but it was delicious!!

I worked in the City in the 90s and a bagel shop opened up just off High Holborn that did an amazing hot tuna melt with chopped tomatoes and onions. They fried it on a griddle plate til the bagel was toasted and the filling was oozy. Total delight.

Tarkan · 24/08/2023 00:03

The very first one I ever had had Brie rather than cheddar in it and it was gorgeous.

I'm also partial to a seafood pizza. Anchovies, tuna and mussels although it can be a little salty so sometimes I'll just have anchovies with mushrooms and pineapple. I know it sounds awful but it's salty, sweet and earthy all together and I love it.

HelpaFriend85 · 24/08/2023 00:04

Hot mayo 😳

Blanketpolicy · 24/08/2023 00:08

Love a tuna melt with sweetcorn too

OzziePopPop · 24/08/2023 00:08

We do tuna and cheese on toast with grated cheese and flaked up tuna (mixed) and then lots of Worcestershire sauce and a knob of butter melted together mixed into that. Then spread on toast and grill till bubbly/golden. Delicious!

Mouldyfoodhelp · 24/08/2023 00:16

My first was what I thought was an unlucky last panini at school lunch, the day my life changed ❤️

Labraradabrador · 24/08/2023 00:20

@FrogandToadAreFriends that looks amazing

Hatvonbat · 24/08/2023 00:21

I thought I was the only one!!! Phew!

GoingInsaneAhhh · 24/08/2023 00:21

Lovely with mayo

79Beastie · 24/08/2023 00:22

It's like tuna paste bake. It's so wrong, tuna isn't supposed to be hot..... Sorry

call911 · 24/08/2023 00:22

It’s a common pairing. Have you ever tried a warm jacket potato with tuna and cheese? It’s the same taste.

I would say the combination is hit and miss. If the tuna is particularly strong and fishy, it won’t taste great as it will overpower the cheese and bread. The ideal combination is the tuna and cheese both being mild as both flavours pleasantly combine into one.

CallieQ · 24/08/2023 00:24

Tuna melt is right!

Yum

call911 · 24/08/2023 00:25

Forgive me as a vegetarian, but is hot fish really that weird? Fish can be fried, grilled etc so presumably served hot.

Wallabyone · 24/08/2023 00:27

Tuna melts are delicious-I love the one from Starbucks, but can make a much healthier version at home e 😂
