Tuna melt… wrong?

AIBU to think a tuna melt just sounds wrong!
Hot fish and cheese? Who does this?
part of me wants to try one in case I’m missing out, but I think I might well puke…
what are your opinions?

Now I want one - and I've gone to bed!

Deeeelicious.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 23/08/2023 22:18

They can be surprisingly good.

Pollywoddles · 23/08/2023 22:19

It’s my favourite sandwich and it’s a huge hit in our house. You’re missing out!

SoupDragon · 23/08/2023 22:19

it just works.

Showmethebagels · 23/08/2023 22:20

Tuna melts are amazing! I first had one in Morrisons cafe about 20 years ago and been making them ever since. Also had a v posh one in a French cafe, they called it croque au thon it was the best

PensionPuzzle · 23/08/2023 22:21

I couldn't agree more. Hot tinned tuna is disgusting (I don't eat tuna pasta bake either).

NooNooTheNotSoGreat · 23/08/2023 22:22

Tuna melts are amazing but they need red onion, and preferably peppers too.

Colinorpercy · 23/08/2023 22:22

I agree, gives me the boak! It’s also the addition of hot mayo that makes it even more wrong 🤢

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/08/2023 22:23

Amazing. Don't knock til you've tried

Spudlover · 23/08/2023 22:23

I love a tuna melt, and agree about the red onion. Tuna, cheese and onion all work together.

Aserena · 23/08/2023 22:23

I remember thinking exactly this when, at 18, I walked into the students union and saw tuna melt panini on the menu (for the first time in my life). I didn’t believe it was safe to eat! I remember telling my mum about it on the phone, in disgust!
And then, around Christmas time of my first year, curiosity got the better of me.

And a tuna melt convert was born!

declutteringmymind · 23/08/2023 22:23

Definitely not wrong.

YoSof · 23/08/2023 22:24

It is the best sandwich of all time. I will die on this hill.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2023 22:26

It needs to be in a bagel, and made with processed cheese slices for the proper meltiness. Don't waste good cheddar on them.

Hot mayonnaise shouldn’t work but it does

Blessedbethefruitz · 23/08/2023 22:26

My hangover cure at university. The thought makes me gag now...

Or spring onions!

LulusMiniEgg · 23/08/2023 22:27

I hate cold tuna sandwiches or tuna mayo on jackets etc but a tuna melt is lovely, it’s probably the cheese, cheese makes everything better 😊

TheDogsMother · 23/08/2023 22:27

Fish and cheese generally wrong (except for a fish pie in cheese sauce) but a tuna melt is surprisingly good.

BashfulClam · 23/08/2023 22:28

It is amazing, give it a try.

ZombieNations · 23/08/2023 22:28

Ok, it seems I might be missing out here.
I will attempt making one tomorrow maybe… Anyone got a foolproof recipe?

Good marketing ploy to flog tinned tuna of dubious quality to the masses.

YANBU - it sounds utterly disgusting

Hardhattime · 23/08/2023 22:28

I always thought they were disgusting, until I was served one on a delicious crispy cibatta, crisp red onion salad, drizzle of mayo and an ice cold fresh orange juice. Cured my dreadful hangover almost immediately and I've been a fan ever since. I've spent years trying to recreate that meal. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Curryageous · 23/08/2023 22:28

Many dishes are hot fish and cheese/sauce - look at some French classics.

bridgetreilly · 23/08/2023 22:30

Agree it sounds like it would be awful and yet it’s really good.
