Tuna melt… wrong?

AIBU to think a tuna melt just sounds wrong!
Hot fish and cheese? Who does this?
part of me wants to try one in case I’m missing out, but I think I might well puke…
what are your opinions?

Have you had or thought about trying a jacket potato with tuna and cheese? Is that less puke inducing for you?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/08/2023 22:30

Tina melt is the ultimate comfort food!

Absolutelynotfor2019 · 23/08/2023 22:31

Am definitely not tempted!

UndercoverCop · 23/08/2023 22:31

I prefer them open so more like tuna and cheese on toast, spring onions welcome.
Got to be a nice sharp mature cheddar, not too much mayo. I like granary bread or baguette sliced length ways.
Once at uni we ran out of bread and made tuna melt on top of smiley face potato things. It was amazing i might have been quite drunk

Now I want one - and I've gone to bed!

Deeeelicious.

Same....

And I went to bed without any dinner because I had a massive and late lunch (am absolutely not a MN massive salad/competitive undereater, I was genuinely v full until about 30 mins ago partic as it's hot, but now I'm regretting that.....).

Eat used to do a really tasty tuna melt that was a bit of a hangover guilty pleasure lunch option for me.

NooNooTheNotSoGreat · 23/08/2023 22:34

The Bagel Factory used to do a bagel with tuna, red onion, Swiss cheese, peppadew peppers and sweet chilli sauce. It was amazing and I still miss it. I can taste it now.

Fish and cheese generally wrong (except for a fish pie in cheese sauce) but a tuna melt is surprisingly good.

Yep fish pie used to get a massive thumbs down from me as a child due to the combination of fish, cheese and hard boiled egg which felt v wrong and gave me the boak. I have long since seen the error of my ways though as fish pie is delicious.

No sounds even worse for some reason! 😂

Tuna melts are amazing but they need red onion, and preferably peppers too.

And capers!

Lilithlogic · 23/08/2023 22:41

Tinned mackerel in tomato sauce and cheese on toast is so good

TheDogsMother · 23/08/2023 22:41

@Lemonyfuckit I get it. My mum used to make a tuna fish pie which was tuna, hard boiled egg in a cheese sauce topped with mash. Probably food naff now but it was lovely.

Clefable · 23/08/2023 22:42

Tuna melts are SO good. YABVU

pythongreenporsche · 23/08/2023 22:44

Omg love! Esp with onions or black olive or both! BUT the best fish sandwich is tinned tuna mixed with Nando's perinaise. Trust me!

WashableVelvet · 23/08/2023 22:47

Fish pie, cod Mornay, a sprinkle of Parmesan on a seafood risotto - hot fish cheese and carbs is a great combo!

808KateO · 23/08/2023 22:48

Tuna melts are the ultimate comfort food. Agree it needs capers (or gherkins).

I also love a really cheesy pizza with tuna, although understand most people boak at the thought.

Bonjovispjs · 23/08/2023 22:48

It's so delicious 😋 Tuna and cheese go together really well.

Ok, it seems I might be missing out here.
I will attempt making one tomorrow maybe… Anyone got a foolproof recipe?

I personally kind of feel as though you should have your first in panini or toastie form cafe-style, if you have a nice sandwich cafe near you?

In any case, I recommend:

  • minimal mayo
  • more cheddar cheese than you think should be allowed
  • Loads of red onions and black olives.
YUM

My hangover cure at university. The thought makes me gag now...

Mine too! From the varsity pub accompanied by half a cider and black 😆

catin8oots · 23/08/2023 22:51

It's so good.

See also a tuna and cheese omelette. Controversial I know

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 23/08/2023 22:52

An American work colleague get me onto tuna melts. An absolutely vital ingredient, as well as good mayo is Bick’s cucumber relish. Other brands are available. I need to make myself one now. Thanks for the reminder

808KateO · 23/08/2023 22:52

@catin8oots I've never thought of putting tuna in an omelette so that's lunch sorted tomorrow!

KajsaKavat · 23/08/2023 22:53

Was my staple thing to order in cafes in my youth

Yes! And they taste best in a bagel for some reason.

XenoBitch · 23/08/2023 23:07

Tune melt panini... yes please!

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 23/08/2023 23:10

I hate fresh tuna or salmon. I don't like the thought of heated tuna out of a tin but like it with mayo, sweetcorn, spring onions & other salad.
