Dogs in Greggs

Globules · 23/08/2023 08:29

I'm in Greggs getting my free O2 coffee. There's a dog next to the counter.

Surely dogs in open food places shouldn't be allowed?

YABU - of course all dogs can go in these places
YANBU - dogs have no place there

(Awaits the Greggs comments...🤣)

Not all. Chatting to my vet receptionist about the number of dog owners and the treatment sales and vaccinations have not gone up in line with them.

Apparently, many people prefer "healthy" options (that don't work) for their dogs. If they bother.

I'd hope the vast majority of workmen wouldn't piss anywhere other than the toilets and don't have fleas or worms.

No, they just sit in work stained clothes.

Yawn.another dogs should be extinct post.
Yabu. There are a lot of people on holiday who are not allowed to leave dogs alone in rented accommodation and nobody but a complete and utter idiot would leave a dog in a car for any length of time whatsoever. So the dog owners are stuck, they can spend hours on beaches...oh no dogs not welcome there either....once the dogs are walked in the countryside, why should owner be penalised for taking a dog for a wander around?dogs generally are better behaved than entitled unruly kids running around screaming,in out of changing rooms, dirty hands on clothes, smashing delicate china.so long as dog has access to plenty of water and is kept cool they are ok.

Or people who bought designer dogs during lockdown maybe should have considered their pet's lives when they went back to work or on holiday.

Speaking as an owner of 4 dogs that considers their needs above my own.

No, they just sit in work stained clothes.

I see plenty of workmen sitting around in stained and old clothes. They don't leave stains on the seats because they know better than to walk in with wet or oily stains on them.

Some will take plastic bags to sit on. Because they consider that other people use the facilities.

Dogs don't know the difference when they pee on things or transfer worm eggs and fleas.

That would be the owner's responsibility. Or lack of.

Username1107 · 23/08/2023 12:31

My dog doesn't wee in shops or transfer worm eggs or fleas 😂
Generally humans are far more anti social when out in public than dogs are.

I agree but on MN, dogs are the devil 😈 🙄

I don't take my dog shopping while I'm at home, but on holiday, she will either stay in the car with DH or if it's too hot, stay with DH at the 'van. If we are out sightseeing, she will be with us, and I check for dog friendly/ outdoor seats at cafes and pubs. Greggs presumably adjusts policy in response to local demographics as some are saying yes and others no.
My dog is very popular wherever we go, and I very rarely get negative responses to having her with us. People will cross roads to say hello! --she is a stunning dog, though-

I like dog friendly, although I can see why others aren't keen. Shops will do whatever maximises profit.

icallitasplodge · 23/08/2023 12:54

No. There are open hot food counters which are face level for medium sized dogs, as well as boxed cakes and crisps which I don’t want dribble all over before I eat them.

a lot of people think dogs should be allowed everywhere and anywhere but they are often people who can’t think two or three steps ahead or foresee a problem. That’s why there are so many dog ownership and behavioural issues at the moment.

would you take a dog with you to a tanning booth? Maybe to have your smear test done? Perhaps your dog would like to join you on skis? It’s not always appropriate but people can’t judge so shops need to.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/08/2023 13:26

So what germs do you think dogs have that assistance dogs magically don't have? On these threads, it's always the same thing said yet nobody ever provides an answer. If you are happy to have the presence of a guide dog etc in an eatery, why are you so bothered by other dogs aside from saying assistance dogs are different

The answer is numbers. There are very few guide dogs around. I've not seen one in my local town for years. I've seen a hearing dog on a train twice in the last decade.

Pets are a very different matter.

And I am not "happy" to have a guide dog in an eatery but I realise that their presence is essential to their owner, their needs are greater than my wants, and in any event a guide dog is so well trained they will not bother me (or get in the way of the staff).

(PS so exciting to be able to edit my messed up quote!)

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/08/2023 13:29

As for taking dogs to smear tests, I am not sure about that, but I know the sports massage therapist I use allows dogs at appointments. Goodness knows why. Surely you can leave a dog at home for an hour!

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/08/2023 13:33

People are treating their animals like accessories

Yes - even before covid they were being treated as a status symbol. It is a mix of "we can afford to have a dog" (and it gives further "justification" to have an SUV) and FOMO - people see "all" their friends having a dog so think they have to have one as well. But then don't want to train them properly (or at all).

Because of late dogs are treated as small humans. Does the dog want to accompany anyone to a sports massage? Would they rather be at home napping instead of being dragged around on tawdry human tasks like picking up fags at the local offy, or hanging about while their owner eats a poor quality sausage roll?

No: they want good high quality walks with exercise and things to sniff that actually excite and encourage them, consistent training and routine so they know what’s coming next. A greggs steak bake they will get told off for slobbering over, is not that.

Username1107 · 23/08/2023 13:43

I'm not sure that a dog is generally considered to be a status symbol / sign of wealth tbh...

HeatherMoores · 23/08/2023 13:43

A lot of dogs seem to quite like going round John Lewis.

Why do you have to take a baby shopping? Most of the time people take babies and dogs shopping because they like spending time with them, don’t want to/ can’t leave them on their own or with anyone else.

FrownBrown · 23/08/2023 13:45

I think some dog-owners become confused between treating their dog as a member of their family, the same as a human and expecting the rest of the world to.

And get upset when the rest of the world doesn't.

I walked into greggs in Keswick with a dog and was immediately turfed out which was fair enough. Keswick is so dog friendly I’d assumed it was ok. Turns out Greggs and Costa are about the only two places in town they can’t go in.

And Weatherspoons. Aside from that I think dogs actually own Keswick 😂

well perhaps a mother needs to buy something and has to take her child with her as she has no one to look after it? And a human baby cannot be left unattended. That’s quite different to taking a dog on a day trip to aisle 5 when it CAN be left unattended, and would most likely thank you for some down time.

Username1107 · 23/08/2023 13:53

Keswick sounds like a good place for a holiday. Whitby is also very dog friendly.

I’ve never set foot in Whetherspoons. I wouldn’t actually mind tying her up outside that branch of Greggs if there was somewhere to tie her up to right outside and in view. It’s only about 3 steps from the door to the counter and would be 30 seconds to get a sausage roll. If you’re desperate they will let you shout your order from the door and bring your food to you but I can’t cope with the embarrassment. 🙈😂

Florencearbuthnot2 · 23/08/2023 14:05

I work in retail. And dogs are actively encouraged. The amount of wee ,slobber and other stuff that gets everywhere we are constantly cleaning up Uggh. The dogs are dragged in and quite a few seem very distressed not to mention the fights every so often. Oblivious owners, sorry fur parents. Some staff are allergic or scared of dogs so can’t work in the main retail area

I think it is. They are expensive to buy, expensive to keep and as I said, you then "need" the SUV to go with them, so they add to the well-off lustre.

Some staff are allergic or scared of dogs so can’t work in the main retail area I've often wondered what happens to staff who've been working somewhere for a while when their manager suddenly decides that they are going to let dogs in. I would hate it, and would have hated it when I worked in shops on Saturdays.

Bananas1350 · 23/08/2023 15:39

I went to a fairly expensive restaurant a few weeks ago. And they now let dogs in. Sat next to a table with two of them messing about and barking away. I won’t go back. And I say this as a dog lover. Not what I want when I go out to eat.

ShanghaiDiva · 23/08/2023 08:37

Dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) have no place in any cafe or shop imo. Fail to understand why anyone takes their dog ‘shopping’.

When I had my dogs, I used to take them "shopping" when on holiday.

You can't leave them alone in a holiday cottage, or in a car (unless the weather is cold and cloudy and set to stay that way) so if you need to buy anything, you have to take them with you.

LakieLady · 23/08/2023 15:53

SamW98 · 23/08/2023 09:18

I agree. Beer garden or outside yes, inside no.

My town has lost 5 pubs over the last decade or so.

It would lose an awful lot more if dogs weren't allowed in. Around50% of the tables in my nearest pub were occupied by people with dogs last time I was in there. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any that don't allow dogs in.

Username1107 · 23/08/2023 15:54

Depends what sort of dog you are thinking of. They come in all breeds / shapes and sizes. Certainly not all dogs are expensive to buy / keep or require an SUV to transport them.
