To feel bad for the Lionesses ?

Whether footy minded or not I cannot help but feel bad for the Lionesses today with no person of note to support them. The Spanish Queen can go.It feels like an own goal to me letting the Ladies down. Not a good look for our country I think. What do you think?

@NHSarah you can’t seriously be comparing Netball to football?😂 One is a Mickey Mouse sport on a par with tiddlywinks and the other is the most popular sport in the world.

I hated playing Netball, but it's incredibly popular where I live now, keeping many females playing sport well into adulthood. There are primary leagues, secondary leagues, adult leagues, county level games and even some folk making it to national sides. Some of the younger boys play it too, I wish they'd be encouraged to try it more - they might hate it like me, but you never know until you try!

He should have hitched a lift with the Queen of Spain

Now there’s an idea. 👍

In terms of a figure to informally (i.e not as part of any formal meetings/diplomatic duties) represent the countries support then absolutely a comparison can be made between an MP and a royal. There’s been criticism of Kate not attending - she’s got nothing to do with the FA and little association with football generally so it’s clearly about just having someone with the right job title there to apparently give some gravity to the England teams achievement. Not that I personally think it can add anything of the sort to what they’ve already achieved.

However. As I said earlier. The Royal Family primary ‘job’ is their engagements- representing the country, for which they are entitled to enormous wealth. MPs main job, for which they are elected, is not representing the country in a diplomatic capacity (formally or informally) it is representing their constituents in Parliament, alongside their other responsibilities. For which their salary is a tiny proportion of the levels we are talking about for the Royal Family.

So they are not comparable in terms of roles, material wealth or ongoing earnings, and that’s why I absolutely expect the Royal Family to turn up to important sporting events, whereas MPs Im less bothered about.

Cornettoninja · 20/08/2023 13:07

I referred to his role as an unelected diplomat and the ongoing wealth that entitles him to

so you want the RF to make arrangements (and pay) for travel and associated guff to all international sporting heat events just in case England do well? They’d obviously have to cover Scottish, Welsh and NI teams too. You want that to be part of their official duties?

So you don’t think the RF need to be at major sporting events held in the commonwealth wealth (which they are head of) or when their national side is in a world family???
I would rather we got rid of them altogether but I thought they whole point was that they did things like this to represent the country lol.
All this proves to me is how unnecessary they are if you’re saying they don’t need even be doing this!!!

She’s a Secretary for State though. Not just a consistency MP. Her role is to create plans and policies for sport, media and culture. This means funding. Part of her role is to enhance the UK’s reputation in these areas worldwide. The IK government’s role is to represent us on a global stage. We need international trade and investment. Football is a £billion industry. Think of the sponsorship. Her attendance is so much more than this one match.

You are just going down the nasty route which doesn't surprise me from football fans that theirs is only sport that matters and no other matters.

Other sports matter and given the correct resources and media attention could thrive.

No I don’t, they haven’t been missed at other international competitions even when, for context, they’ve attended closer events for the same sports.

It’s just weird to read someone who proclaims they’d rather the RF was abolished, holding behaviour that suits that position against them. You might have a point if none of them had done any diplomatic duties in recent years but that wouldn’t be true would it?

It doesn’t really highlight a reason for or against, it just makes it look like you’re not very discerning in arguments you’ll use to back up a position because you like it or it suits you.

I don’t get a choice about having a royal family, or how much wealth or land they have. So that being the case I would at least like them to do their job at every available opportunity, is that difficult for you to understand? If so let’s agree to disagree, the match is over now so let’s move on with our lives.

And she did actually attend so she’s done that part of her job Alongside all the other aspects. That she is elected to do. And paid a good but not obscene amount to do
RF did not attend, are not elected, and are paid an obscene amount to attend engagements. I don’t see them as comparable, we can agree to disagree and move on with our lives…

HennyPenny1234 · 20/08/2023 14:13

Yes, they lost because a member of the royal family wasn't there

Not because they were beaten by a better team

seafronty · 20/08/2023 14:15

I just wish our Queens Katherine and Meghan had been there to see our brave lionesses

Enfys1982 · 20/08/2023 14:17

No @Cornettoninja because it’s shit. A throwback to the days when women were seen as the lesser sex so had to have their own sport with zero contact and stupid rules.

LaBrujaPiruja · 20/08/2023 14:18

William should have been here as he is the president of The FA, not as Prince of Wales (royal bonus).

but this doesn’t fall under the remit of ‘doing their job’. That’s the whole point of the discussion. If it did it wouldn’t matter what associations PW has with the FA or whether or not Kate and Charlotte should have gone.

I understand perfectly well thank you. I just don’t agree with you because it’s apparent that you just don’t like the RF (whatever, plenty don’t. My position is irrelevant because I’m ambivalent at best) and all to happy to cling onto any easy argument.

DysonSpheres · 20/08/2023 14:19

One of the Royals should have gone. They could at least have put one the minor-in-successions on a plane...

edwinbear · 20/08/2023 14:24

@Enfys1982 international goal scorers in netball have a scoring accuracy rate of between 95-100%. Which is more than can be said for our footballers. How throughly unpleasant and ignorant to be so disparaging about a female centric sport which millions of girls and women play and enjoy.

lljkk · 20/08/2023 14:29

is there a thread where we can just be bummed that they lost not moaning about who did or didn't go? X fingers. I will hunt...

I don't enjoy netball, but there is no denying how many females are introduced to sport, kept in sport, or return to sport, via netball. I don't get the obsession with the female footballers, when there are women in so many other sports - many of who have been excelling for years!
