To feel bad for the Lionesses ?

Whether footy minded or not I cannot help but feel bad for the Lionesses today with no person of note to support them. The Spanish Queen can go.It feels like an own goal to me letting the Ladies down. Not a good look for our country I think. What do you think?

I read this morning that as King Charles is head of state for Australia and has not yet been to visit (delay in the Australian invitation) that constitutionally his heir is not allowed to visit before him. Might explain why William isn't there.

I read that too. Wonder if they’d stick to this archaic rule if it was a men’s World Cup final.
Kate and other female Royals could have attended so no problem.
After all, we all know Charles and others don’t bother about other long-standing traditions, like marriage vows.

It’s a huge snub. I cant imagine either the pm or the president of the FA have missed any other such final.

This.
It's not about a 'man' being there, it's the fact that the President of the FA would have been there if it were the men's final.

The RF have no qualms about making extravagant use of private planes and helicopters as it suits them. This is not about protecting the environment, and a royal entourage could simply have commandeered the first class cabin of a commercial flight.

It’s not about the football or women either is it? It’s about point scoring for republicans.

wave around enough opportunities for people to get angry and they line up…. Christ, this has been used so much over the last decade you’d think people would spot it a mile off.

DarkDarkNight · 20/08/2023 11:56

I think it’s good to think of the climate and not make that plane journey for one match. I’m sure Prince William and the PM of the day will come to the same decision should the men’s team ever make the final [hmmm]

On another note though I’m getting sick of people saying they’re ‘bringing it home for the first time since 1966’. No they’re not. That’s the men’s game, it’s something completely different.

'I read this morning that as King Charles is head of state for Australia and has not yet been to visit (delay in the Australian invitation) that constitutionally his heir is not allowed to visit before him. Might explain why William isn't there.'

Oh really, where is this written in the Constitution? Oh of course, we don't have one. Really this is just ridiculous, they make this stuff up as they go along.

Let's not make the massive achievement of these women about the presence (or not) of one man

Well said!

Nothing directly to do with the subject of this thread. But it is just an illustration of the ludicrous justifications for William not going.

Same as the environmental arguments. I am not saying there isn't a strong case for minimising international travel for this reason; however it is not as though the decision not to go is part of an overall strategy on the part of William and his family to avoid such travel, along with other impacts on the environment, and thereby set a good example. We all know that such a strategy doesn't exist.

I agree with you there and as far as I know the RF haven’t used the argument themselves.

It should really be enough that there isn’t really a precedent for RF members formally attending any sporting events on the other side of the world when an single event is reliant on progressing through competition stages.

it’s all just rage bait.

Own goal for Sunak and Prince William but everyone knows Tories hate women

Where was the outrage over Royalty and Prime Ministers missing the Netball World Cup final the other week?

3 mins to go ..Cannot imagine how the ladies are feeling. The butterflies in my tummy would be doing overtime and I would need the loo!! I wish them all the very best. So proud of what they have achieved up to now for themselves. Go Lionesses...

Oh dear, the laydees with butterflies in their tummy and needing the loo? Confused
I'm sensing a real divide on this thread between people who regularly watch sport and those who are only watching because it's a final which started at 11am

The poster was putting themselves in their position…. Not sure why they’ve come in for your scorn?

No I couldn't be bothered. Though I do want them to win. Far too long a journey just to watch a football match.

Davros · 20/08/2023 12:09

Cornettoninja I seriously doubt if they would imagine the men feeling like that before a match

Surely it's the Queen Consort or Waity Katie who didn't go?

Plus, the Spanish queen spends all her days floating around at social events.

chicjen · 20/08/2023 12:19

I had no idea this was going to be about football based on the title, presumed it would be something to do with big cats animal welfare 🤷‍♀️

You may not, but it’s not beyond the realms of comprehension that others might.

I’ve watched plenty of penalty shoot outs where I’ve commented on the nerves the player might be experiencing under the pressure.

Turning it into a misogynistic comment requires massive leaps that completely discount simply empathising with another human being.
