To feel bad for the Lionesses ?

Whether footy minded or not I cannot help but feel bad for the Lionesses today with no person of note to support them. The Spanish Queen can go.It feels like an own goal to me letting the Ladies down. Not a good look for our country I think. What do you think?

Waste a money!!! He shouldn’t be there l. There’s people starving in this country

Womencanlift · 20/08/2023 11:36

They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. If they did go (for either the men or the women) they would quite rightly be blasted for taking a 24 hour flight to watch a 90 minute football game in the current global boiling climate

Yes it was very likely that England got far in this competition so as President of the FA it may have made more sense if he went out for say the quarter finals and stayed for the semi and final if England got through. Taking Charlotte too would have been a great PR opportunity

But as others have said Australia is a delicate country when it comes to the RF so that might have come into play.

Davros · 20/08/2023 11:37

If you are "footy minded" you'll know that no-one cares about some royal geezer turning up, it's about the game

FiddleLeaf · 20/08/2023 11:37

Yes, singing for an establishment who couldn’t give an eff.

BUT… I doubt the lionesses care about some balding old men.

Odingodof · 20/08/2023 11:37

It's not about William himself at all.

It's not like he's a well known fan and it's sad his enthusiasm hasn't carried over to women's footy.

It's about him representative of us and the FA.

Him not going shows little care.

With that argument their helicopter(s) should be binned and money put to better use

Palaces and thousands of acres opened up to those in need.

But nah, they’ll crack on spending.

Womencanlift · 20/08/2023 11:40

But I would say the Men’s Rugby in 2003 received about a commensurate level of attention as the Women’s football in 2023.

Quite a few of the RF were in Australia in 2003 but I think it was as fans rather than officially. That’s were Zara started seeing Mike Tindall after being introduced by Harry while they were out there. She talked about it on that rugby podcast that Mike does

TiaraBoo · 20/08/2023 11:40

I HATE when a member of the RF or politicians pop up at the final. I always think don’t come for the ‘glory’, where were you in the first round /lost/drawn matches (depending on the type of sport).
Although I appreciate that other people think this shows support at the final.

viques · 20/08/2023 11:40

The fact is we all know damn well that if it was the mens team with a 50/50 chance ( I am being conservative here) of lifting the World Cup and being presented with their World Cup medals we all know that PW would have gone there even if he had had to be carried in with two broken legs. Just as we know that Nike would have produced a goalkeepers shirt to honour Mary and that the players bonus would not have been half that that the men would have won……..

Oh yes, if they win, there will be some honours in the honours list, and a Buckingham House Reception, and an open top bus parade in Trafalgar Square, but the mens team would have got that too . Not going is a snub, but it’s OK, they are women, they will be kind and understand.

PW and a few hangers on could have taken commercial flights which would have cost next to nothing . He has chosen not to, instead he makes a ten second deadpan video wheeling out his daughter for back up. Didn’t even wave a flag.

Once again. No member of the RF jumped on a plane to attend the Men’s Rugby WC final in 2003 and only a junior member of government attended.

I don’t know why people are determined to put a downer on today and feel slighted. There is no fact based evidence that they would have done anything differently for men - the men haven’t been in a football final for nearly 60 years and RF / senior government didn’t attend the rugby final.

You cannot organise a state visit at the drop of a hat either.

Party pooper - bringing all your facts and real life evidence to the debate. People have quite enough fantasy to work themselves up into a rage over completely fabricated slights thank you very much.

it’s a shame that the teams great performance is being dragged into negativity that is mostly evidenced by absolutely nothing. It makes zero difference to their performance to have a member of the RF there watching. Zero.

All these people distracting from their performance and achievements by making it about their own agendas is laughable, or it would be if it didn’t produce exactly the effect hoped for by getting a load of people riled up about something that they don’t actually give a shit about but fits their agenda in slagging off something else.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 20/08/2023 11:41

If the men were in the world cup, no matter where it was being held, the royals and every other fucker would be there, so yes, I do feel it’s a snub.

However, these are strong, successful, and hard working women. I’m not into football but hate that there’s so much focus on others not attending, rather than on the team.

Livingtothefull · 20/08/2023 11:41

'But as others have said Australia is a delicate country when it comes to the RF so that might have come into play.'

So Australia's future Head of State is too scared to visit?

Odingodof · 20/08/2023 11:42

@viques

Well said, I was cringing at his daughter being wheel out as well.

Odingodof · 20/08/2023 11:43

I thought I saw sohpie wessex though?

WaltzingWaters · 20/08/2023 11:43

If it were somewhere close absolutely. But it’s the other side of the world! That’s a LOT of expense and carbon footprint for a football match.

Regardless of the answer, what’s that got to do with anything?

Billslills · 20/08/2023 11:44

IMO, I think it would’ve been pretty cool to see Kate and Charlotte at the game!

Exactly. I'm glad he hasn't gone.

SherbetDips · 20/08/2023 11:45

England is behind them they know this. Prince William and the king have sent messages of support and I’m sure they’ll be invited to the palace on their return for a much deserved pat on the back.

Don’t be so patronising 😂 William didn’t go to Qatar either.

Iusedtoliveinsanfrancisco · 20/08/2023 11:46

You’re sad because the England team got to the semifinals? It’s a monumental achievement and don’t knock it.

poetryandwine · 20/08/2023 11:47

The RF have no qualms about making extravagant use of private planes and helicopters as it suits them. This is not about protecting the environment, and a royal entourage could simply have commandeered the first class cabin of a commercial flight.

smartiesneberhadtheanswer · 20/08/2023 11:48

Don't be daFT OP, the lionesses are women and therefore far too sensible to care if some rich prat is watching them 😂😂😂

'You cannot organise a state visit at the drop of a hat...' Confused

The date of the final has been available for MONTHS. The Royal Family should have reserved that date in the diary, and made preparations to go. As for comparing it to 2003 rugby. Straw Man argument. Football is way more popular in the UK, and this is a MASSIVE MOMENT for the team AND for England, to have a team in the WORLD CUP FINAL.

But heyyy, they're only girls right?! Hmm

I think you'll find rugby is also massively popular. There is no guarantee that they would be in the final so why waste money on the off chance. William didn't go to all the men's matches last time either.

It's not because they're 'girls' it's because logistically it's not that doable.

FrogSplash · 20/08/2023 11:49

I'm more outraged that, if Twitter is to be believed (I know) the FA promised all the men's team in Qatar £1m bonuses if they won but have declined to even agree a suggested £100k bonus for the women playing saying 'they'll discuss it after'.

Livingtothefull · 20/08/2023 11:52

Cornettoninja · 20/08/2023 11:43

Nothing directly to do with the subject of this thread. But it is just an illustration of the ludicrous justifications for William not going.

Same as the environmental arguments. I am not saying there isn't a strong case for minimising international travel for this reason; however it is not as though the decision not to go is part of an overall strategy on the part of William and his family to avoid such travel, along with other impacts on the environment, and thereby set a good example. We all know that such a strategy doesn't exist.
