To feel bad for the Lionesses ?

Whether footy minded or not I cannot help but feel bad for the Lionesses today with no person of note to support them. The Spanish Queen can go.It feels like an own goal to me letting the Ladies down. Not a good look for our country I think. What do you think?

I don’t think that the lionesses care at all if Prince William/Rishi Sunak etc are there or not. We are seriously kidding ourselves though if we think for one second that they wouldn’t be there if it was the men in the World Cup final.

Let's not make the massive achievement of these women about the presence (or not) of one man

Exactly! They've done amazingly well to get to the finals and have done great things for women's sport, I'm not sure why there's so much focus on William.

I'm not sure, to be honest. I think she probably should be, but it depends if I would also expect her to be at a mens World Cup final. But I'm more bothered by the President of the FA not being there. What sort of message does that give? He'd definitely be there if it was the mens final, in my opinion.

She is there. Shows how much you really care.

Halfemptyhalfling · 20/08/2023 12:47

With climate change there is no way that a royal based in the UK can justify flying to Australia for one day.

CambridgeBuns · 20/08/2023 12:48

The England team are supported in Australia by Lucy Fraser, Secretary of State for culture, media and sport. A pioneering woman minister lifting up pioneering women footballers. This is a huge display of progress, driven by women at the top of their games. https://x.com/lutsanddefoe/status/1693202056637476923?s=46

It’s a historical moment for the players, the back room staff and the supporters.

Enfys1982 · 20/08/2023 12:50

If Queen Letizia can be bothered to show up the so should they. He just didn’t want to go, pure and simple. They are useless, lazy and entitled and quite honestly the monarchy should have died with the Queen.

Cornettoninja · 20/08/2023 12:42

But she does take a salary from the public purse following her own campaigning to represent the people of the county.

In a straight comparison between a royal and an MP I’d say an MP has more obligation to go (if anyone absolutely had to).

Lol comparing a member of the royal family and an MP is not a straight comparison in the slightest!!! You don’t need to explain why I’m hoping.

Livingtothefull · 20/08/2023 12:52

'it’s all just rage bait'.

I don't get the sense of any rage on this thread @Cornettoninja . Just disappointment and some annoyance. It is disappointing that the President of the FA can't be bothered to attend this event.

And that 10 second video with his daughter to say 'sorry' has imo just made things worse. Using his child as a PR shield to deflect from the backlash of his decision not to support the women players. BTW our rf is the most expensive in Europe, Spain's is the cheapest; but Spain's Queen managed to go in person.

It is a disappointment that William thinks taking a few minutes out of his holiday to make that video, would make this any better; that the future Head of State evidently thinks we are all gullible idiots. But as I say, disappointment not rage.

Prince William apologises for not being at the World Cup final 'in person'

The Prince of Wales has said in a video that he is sorry for not being able to watch the Women's World Cup final in person but wishes the Lionesses…

Guess their loss is all on Prince William's head now. Off with it!!!

Lucy Frazer doesn’t get hundreds of millions of pounds from the taxpayer every year for her role, so I’m fine with that, cheers for asking.

Who do you think pays her? Princes William doesn’t get “hundreds of millions of pounds from the taxpayer” or the FA for his role as president… if you want to compare apples with apples, Cher’s for your feedback ;-)

Heathotstuff · 20/08/2023 12:53

You should be pleased he’s not gone based on what you’re saying.

I do actually need an explanation. I look forward to it. If you have one, which I doubt 😅

MargaretThursday · 20/08/2023 12:57

And just to prove how important you all feel women's football is, you've spent most of the match arguing over the audience rather than discussing the game.

I think that says a lot.

Where you this outraged about a lack of royal representation at the finals of the Netball World Cup at the start of August?

Enfys1982 · 20/08/2023 13:02

@CambridgeBuns he’s the President of the FA. He should be there. If it was the men’s final he’d have been there on roller skates.

I never referred to his role in the FA, I referred to his role as an unelected diplomat and the ongoing wealth that entitles him to. If he was paid the same amount as Lucy frazer I wouldn’t care if he went either! Hope that’s a bit clearer for you 😉

In terms of a figure to informally (i.e not as part of any formal meetings/diplomatic duties) represent the countries support then absolutely a comparison can be made between an MP and a royal. There’s been criticism of Kate not attending - she’s got nothing to do with the FA and little association with football generally so it’s clearly about just having someone with the right job title there to apparently give some gravity to the England teams achievement. Not that I personally think it can add anything of the sort to what they’ve already achieved.

Wsmi · 20/08/2023 13:04

England lost as usual. So really the important people saved themselves a trip.

Enfys1982 · 20/08/2023 13:04

@NHSarah you can’t seriously be comparing Netball to football?😂 One is a Mickey Mouse sport on a par with tiddlywinks and the other is the most popular sport in the world.

Mikimoto · 20/08/2023 13:05

Queen Letizia has nothing to do with football or her FA.
Why isn't the Queen Consort there? Couldn't stand the long
flight without 20 Marlboro?

Cornettoninja · 20/08/2023 13:07

I referred to his role as an unelected diplomat and the ongoing wealth that entitles him to

so you want the RF to make arrangements (and pay) for travel and associated guff to all international sporting heat events just in case England do well? They’d obviously have to cover Scottish, Welsh and NI teams too. You want that to be part of their official duties?

Why’s netball equal to tiddlywinks? Because it’s a female dominated sport?
