To be furious at being woken at 6 every. Fucking. Morning

Member786488 · 19/08/2023 22:26

I live opposite a window cleaner.
it’s summer so windows are open.
Every morning his mate arrives at 6.00am and they have a very fucking loud conversation in the road before driving off to work about where the jobs are today, blah blah.

they wake me and possibly other neighbours
up every single day.

why can’t people be more considerate???

how have you asked neighbours nicely to STFU?

OP posts:

About half my street are up at 6/7am

@Panko are you grumpy because you wake up at 6 every morning??
Why are you digging in on the 6 am 'yes' or 'no' reasonable argument? It's NOT(!) and actually it doesn't matter what your perception of reasonable. The OP don't like it and she is asking what she can do.

Now, if you have nothing else meaningful to say why don't you go? (to sleep?)

"You probably won't have realised, but voices in the street carry quite loudly first thing in the morning. I wonder if you could wait until you're into the van before getting going on conversation?"

I'm hoping their first clients of the day don't mind them turning up at 6.30am. Imagine finding them at your window before you're up!

I would think they are doing commercial buildings that early in the day

ElizaWinter · 19/08/2023 23:57

My god how is he allowed to do that? With a PA system too. Unbelievable!

I have complained to the police, but they weren't very interested.
Neighbours have complained on the local FB pages where he advertises and he (the scrap metal man) just puts laughing faces next to their posts. He knows he is untouchable.
Maybe I should try the local council.

BarbieWorldFantastic · 20/08/2023 07:44

Just shut your window!

Where I am, it has definitely been warm enough to have a bedroom window open most nights. And OP would presumably like the noise to stop next summer, when it may be considerably warmer.

Tontostitis · 20/08/2023 07:50

I had a neighbour like this a simple conversation really improved things

AnnieKayTee · 20/08/2023 07:54

5.45am here when the bloke two doors down reverses his 'midlife crisis car' with the extremely loud exhaust down his driveway, leaves it running in the street to close his gates, before driving off. He isn't approachable and would probably be quite pleased he was waking me up every morning.
😒

6 is a perfectly reasonable time to wake up

It really isn’t

DollyTubb · 20/08/2023 07:55

Regarding noise nuisance in general; we had very noisy neighbours and we eventually went to Environmental Health at our council offices. It was at a time when DH was working away a lot and not getting to bed until the wee hours, but also it was intrusive and disturbing noise whatever the time. They asked us to speak to our neighbours and try to come to an amicable agreement and also to keep a diary of when and how long the noise went on for and the impact it had on our lives. They also installed noise monitoring equipment in our house. We won our case for noise nuisance and it stopped.

Our local council building control forbid noisy work before 8am so there's an indication that the world doesn't agree with you.

TheHateIsNotGood · 20/08/2023 07:59

I love the weekly scrap man in secretfreckle's village, it harks back to the 'rag and bone man' with his horse and cart that used to collect scrap metal in the town I lived in in the 1970s.

At least his modern equivalent waits until 8am.

SharonEllis · 20/08/2023 08:09

Definitely face to face, not a note! Maybe they just don't realise? 6 is definitely unreasonable.

Dibbydoos · 20/08/2023 08:11

Like they couldn't talk in tgeir van on tge way to the jobs? Twerps.

Just tell him nicely he's waking you up. He has no idea all of his business info is being spoken about openly....!

I live on a nature reserve and dog walkers with barking dogs early in the morning are my bug bear. They set one of my dogs off - he only barks in response to other dogs barking and Im sure he's telling them to shut up cos my dogs dont bark! To alert theres someone at the door its an earprick or they make their way to the door to show me!

whatkatydid2013 · 20/08/2023 08:15

It’s impossible to say how reasonable people are in these situations as how loud someone is being is a bit subjective. Some people would only be woken up if there was shouting going on, others it would only take someone talking in a fairly normal voice. It’s pretty unreasonable to be yelling, doing diy, playing loud music etc. It’s probably not unreasonable to be getting in your car/van and heading to work or to be having a conversation at normal volume as you are shoving your stuff in. Realistically a decent portion of working people will be up by 6 including those with early starts and those with long commutes. Equally a decent proportion of working people will be up at midnight. Similarly I’d expect them to try and avoid loud activity later in the evening but I’d expect for example that people might be talking in the garden past 10pm, watching TV, arriving back from places in the car etc.
It’s worth letting them know it’s disturbing you but whether they will stop waking you or not will be dependent both on how considerate they are and how sensitive to noise you are. It’s therefore also worth seeing what you can do to avoid being woken.
Different situation as it’s really unavoidable noise but we have seagulls making a racket round 4:30am in summer here. In general I find closing the windows before heading to bed and ensuring the blackout curtains are all closed means they are v unlikely to wake us up. If it’s too light we are more likely to be disturbed by the same noise. As long as they’ve been open till you go to bed it tends to be that the room is reasonably cool.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/08/2023 01:28

I think a "WILL YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!" out of your window could do the trick.

I am not sure which neighbour of mine did this last summer when there was a man over the road who got a lift to work from a mate who thought that heavy bass music at 4.30 am was perfectly ok. He waited until a break in the music and yelled this (admittedly whoever it was had a very loud deep voice so sounded quite butch!) but it never happened again!

Heavy bass music at 4:30am is so obviously unreasonable that you can safely assume that anyone who's doing it will not be susceptible to reason, so it's fair enough to go straight in with the STFU.

Having a chat with your colleague at the start of the working day (so a sober chat, not a loud drunk chat) is a perfectly normal thing to do, so I'd start on the assumption that he's a normal bloke who's thoughtlessly failed to realise that
a) 6 am is the middle of the bloody night for a lot of people
b) sound travels much more in a totally quiet street
c) people have their windows open in summer

Try the reasonable "you probably haven't realised but" approach first and ask them to keep it down. Maybe they could get in the car and close the windows before they run through the jobs for the day, or do it in his kitchen, or use their indoor voices.

LlynTegid · 20/08/2023 08:23

Talk to him, you are only asking him to be quiet perhaps for another month, before all windows will be shut.

Chowtime · 20/08/2023 08:24

Just go and speak to him about it. Look upon it as an exercise in improving and honing your people skills and communication technique. Part of being an adult is that we sometimes have to have difficult conversations with people.

Good luck.

Noise before 7am especially regular and prolonged is actually punishable anti-social behavior. Just because you wake up at 6 doesn't mean you can break the law.

I do think OP should just shut her windows though.

8 am is annoying if you're trying to have a lie-in but most councils won't get involved with noise nuisance at that time of day, even on a Saturday.

It's not prolonged is it presumably. Its right we're off to xyz first then zyx, do you want breakfast? And then off they go.

Shut your window first OP then if that doesn't help have a polite word if you must.

no

Nails1x1x · 20/08/2023 08:40

6am is not that early lol 😂
I would shut the windows and use a fan.
or have a quiet word with neighbour…
or put up with it with no moaning….

those are your only options really.
