I love nothing more than a relaxing nosey on rightmove.

but want to share my dislikes.

new homes. Nothing wrong with them to live in. But we see nothing interesting in themes. They all look kinda “same”.

islands with a cooker or the main sink in them. Happy with a prep sink in them though

stairs in the living room

fully open plan

bedrooms off of the kitchen table or utility room

My peeves are...
The front door opens straight into the lounge.
The lounge is a through room to the kitchen.
Subway tiles (they remind me of public loos )

SkaneTos · 18/08/2023 23:57

I do not like open plan.
I like doors.

Enko · 18/08/2023 23:58

Toilets off the kitchen I just don't get it.

letmesailletmesail · 18/08/2023 23:58

Mine is when they have photos of the bedrooms & bathrooms but don't specify which is which so you're not sure if you've matched them to the floor plan correctly. Sometimes it's obvious, other times not - especially when a house has been ruthlessly decluttered. If I'm planning my dream home, I need to make sure I know which bedroom I'm going to be in!

Fellow door person here!
Fully open plan feels so corporate. Nothing homely about it.

God, yes 🤢

Why don’t you like island with the cooker in them, OP? That’s what DH wants when we build a new kitchen — he does the cooking and wants to be able to talk and engage with people while he’s doing it, not have his back to the action.

My pet peeve is those huge greige tiles, wall-mounted tvs, especially the ones masquerading as paintings over fireplaces, and ‘pops’ of colour.

Bassetlover · 19/08/2023 00:06

Open plan and also kitchen in the sitting room or in an alcove off the sitting room (I see this in flats all the time). Grotty swimming pools.

Do you all hang around the kitchen every time he cooks?

Timetoflower22 · 19/08/2023 00:09

Utility room leasing off into a separate room. Bothers me

Grey, ANYTHING GREY. Just screams chav.

Velvet sofas and beds. Big no.

Fluffy rugs.

Chanel books and typical decor

Yellow and red. Hate it in houses

TetrapanaxRex · 19/08/2023 00:11

Living rooms or bedrooms with one wall covered in wallpaper. Usually hideous wallpaper.

It's only one wall, if you're selling your house why not make it neutral or match the other walls?

One wall with wallpaper just looks silly.

Bifold doors on older properties.

Grey paint. Especially on the exterior and garden fences and sheds etc.

GrumpyOldCrone · 19/08/2023 00:18

Listings without floor plans. I imagine they’re time consuming to produce, but they are absolutely essential (even though I’m not seriously looking right now).

Not at the moment, as we have a tiny, cement kitchen with a camp stove! But yes, the kitchen is a natural place to hang out, and we have people round to eat a lot (or did in previous houses).

ScattyHattie · 19/08/2023 00:23

When its a gorgeous character property from the outside and then the inside pics could be from a modern build 😪

MaryJanesonabreak · 19/08/2023 00:26

Listings that don’t show the square meters/feet of what you are looking at. Hard to compare one with another.
Photos that don’t tell you what you are looking at: utility? Kitchen? Main bedroom? Etc.
Length and breadth of the garden.
How old the windows and boiler are.

Mostly agree but a velvet sofa is the dream with kids - they clean so easily! Our cotton one is absolutely wrecked but the velvety one looks brand new.

wall paper can be prohibitively expensive

longtompot · 19/08/2023 00:36

All open plan
No room info on the photos
No floor plan
No direction for the garden
Online map takes you to a completely different house and you have to search for where it is

I just hate feature walls. They all look like the room is unfinished or they can't afford to wallpaper the rest of the room.

ReginaPerrin · 19/08/2023 00:39

Kitchen islands, whether they’ve got sinks or cookers in them. I really don’t like them. I’d rather have lots of storage space around the walls of the kitchen and keep the middle free.

Astroturf. It wouldn’t put me off buying a property but I’d have to factor in the cost of getting rid of it and how long it would take to get the garden back to a natural state.

SpiritedSneeze · 19/08/2023 00:39

In flats, I like when there is some seperation between the living room/kitchen and the bedroom/s.
I hate when they are all jumbled together so one bedroom is by the front door leading off of the kitchen and the bathroom is in between leading to the living room and the other bedroom.
Feels like nobody would be able to use the common rooms in the morning without waking the other up by making coffee 1 metre from their bed or using the TV mounted on the same wall as their headboard.

peelyjuice · 19/08/2023 00:40

I think they can look great, just depends on the paper & room, I don't really subscribe to blanket rules, like most things it's how something is executed. .

but backwards fixing books, why?!

I'm so glad someone's else gets the public toilet vibe off metro tiles.

peelyjuice · 19/08/2023 00:42

actually I do hate the 100 spotlights all over the house. Lighting is so beautiful, why not embrace it.

peelyjuice · 19/08/2023 00:43

and front doors that can be opened from the outside with the handle,
