I love nothing more than a relaxing nosey on rightmove.

but want to share my dislikes.

new homes. Nothing wrong with them to live in. But we see nothing interesting in themes. They all look kinda “same”.

islands with a cooker or the main sink in them. Happy with a prep sink in them though

stairs in the living room

fully open plan

bedrooms off of the kitchen table or utility room

My pet peeve is that you can't filter in rightmove on floor area or volume of storage space. I like browsing for 5 bedroom homes and so many times the results are full of houses that were built as 3 bedrooms, but have had a loft extension (with the stairs reducing the size of one of the bedrooms) and a poorly-executed splitting up of the largest bedroom into two pokey single rooms - so yes it's "technically" got 5 rooms you could crowbar a single bed into but it's not what I mean by a 5 bed house.

Similarly, houses that are described as "5 bedroom" because the current owners have put beds into the sitting room and dining room of a 3 bedroom house and a dining table and rattan sofa into a conservatory off the kitchen as the only communal living area.

alibongo5 · 19/08/2023 00:45

I'll start by saying I am untidy. But even I can't understand why people don't try to tidy before photos are taken. I was browsing today and in one photo the hoover had been left out in the middle of the room! Cluttered rooms do not help sell.

Haha, yes, the famous "4/5" bedrooms, where you can have a 4 bed with dining room or a 5 bed without.

Nowhere seems to have books now and I find that feels quite soulless. I prefer homes that look lived in, although I know that's not what estate agents advise. I also hate poor grammar and spelling (sorry) and general hyperbole in the descriptions. I'm not too keen on floor plans with no dimensions or feet and inches. Floor plans that are missing doors are a little annoying as well. None of that stops me drifting back to Rightmove and Zoopla

Why don’t you like island with the cooker in them, OP? That’s what DH wants when we build a new kitchen — he does the cooking and wants to be able to talk and engage with people while he’s doing it, not have his back to the action.

My pet peeve is those huge greige tiles, wall-mounted tvs, especially the ones masquerading as paintings over fireplaces, and ‘pops’ of colour.

You'd hate my house I have neutral everywhere with pops of colour in each room. Also a TV mounted in spare room on the wall.

beeonmybonnett · 19/08/2023 01:00

Houses not having porches when you enter through the front door - I prefer a separation between the front door and the downstairs hallway - I hate the thought of walking in the front door and immediately being the hallway.

peelyjuice · 19/08/2023 01:01

Do you mean like a full enclosed porch?

peelyjuice · 19/08/2023 01:02

I hate the thought of walking in the front door and immediately being the hallway.

surely every front door opens into a hallway?

Why??

peelyjuice · 19/08/2023 01:01

Yes. That’s how it is in my house. There’s the front door, enclosed porch, another door that brings you into the hallway.

HarrietJet · 19/08/2023 01:08

Yeah, not that much of an issue for most people.

beeonmybonnett · 19/08/2023 01:08

HarrietJet · 19/08/2023 01:04

Why??

I don’t know I think I just prefer an extra barrier between me and the outside world? Like it adds more privacy to my home.

Also, we keep our shoes/trainers and coats in the porch.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 19/08/2023 01:08
  1. Wall mounted TV's, especially when they are above a fire/heat source
  2. Hob/sink in the island (for those asking, it's because for me it spoils the island being used for food prep, we use our big island for lots of baking, rolling out pastry, dough, icing, pasta etc. and so we need the large clear work surface for this. When you have a hob on an island, you get the splatter and grease everywhere, same with a sink, the splashing of germs everywhere on the island urghh)
  3. Undercoat, I mean grey everywhere
  4. Wallpaper
  5. Plastic "grass" in the garden
  6. Wide lens photos on the listing
  7. No floorplan on the listing
  8. A property that has just been refurbed to sell yet has the cheapest, shittiest kitchen and bathroom installed and shoddy workmanship...yet they want a premium price for the sale, er no, fuck off.
  9. Radiators placed really inconsiderately, e.g. along the only wall suitable in a room for furniture such as a sideboard or wardrobe. Put the frigging radiator under the window, duh.
  10. Extensions done with bricks that don't match the rest of the house.
Wintersgirl · 19/08/2023 01:31

I hate it when you see a lovely, huge kitchen/family room where a great deal of money and effort has been put in and yet the lounge is like an after thought, measures roughly 10ft x 11ft, so quite small and rather pointless, I don't want to spend everyday in one room no matter how nice it is, I like a proper lounge!

OrangeFluff · 19/08/2023 01:34

My pet peeve is no indication of orientation of the house. I want to know which way the garden faces. I want to know which rooms are going to be receiving the most light to know if the layout will work for me. I’ll spend ages trying to find the house on the map to see if the garden is south facing, when a simple compass on the floor plan would have made it so easy.

Wintersgirl · 19/08/2023 01:37

Wide lens photos on the listing

That pisses me right off, that panoramic shit was done to a house in the next village, they made their driveway look HUGE, it wasn't of course, you could park two cars on it max but the photos, my god, it looked like a sweeping driveway! I wish EAs would fuck off trying to pull the wool over our eyes, one look on Google maps will tell potential buyers that they're lying...

OooPourUsACupLove · 19/08/2023 01:38

Controversial...en suites!

I get the point in hotels when you want a private bathroom and not to go padding into the hallway, but in my own home I'd rather have a small bit of hallway. Ensuites just make me think of condensation, wet towels and damp footprints in the bedroom, and they are usually small as well.

When I'm fantasy shopping for houses on Rightmove I always delegate the master bedroom with en suite as my guest room 😂

Thisweeksname · 19/08/2023 01:47

Open plan - I previously rented a place that was open plan. Never again. You basically live amongst the smell of whatever you’ve had for dinner and you have the noise of the dishwasher etc. I love doors and separate rooms ❤
Fake grass - horrible. It’s really prolific in those tiny new build square gardens. Soulless and boring.

Wintersgirl · 19/08/2023 01:50

Navy and yellow decor is the new grey......

That image is what I do love in period houses, that foyer bit & the double doors (the hall with a fireplace). Is that what you mean @beeonmybonnett?

peelyjuice · 19/08/2023 01:58

I don't like the modern porches added to the front of house personally.

Seashor · 19/08/2023 02:05

I don’t like dark houses. Windows, windows, windows for me. Also houses that are detached but are so close to your detached neighbour that you can shake hands with them through adjacent windows.

MarieKlepto · 19/08/2023 02:17

I want to see floor plans and square footage. We are actually actively looking to move next year. The number of 5 or 6 beds (we don't need that many, just browsing) that I've stumbled across that have two or three ensuites plus a family bathroom but no downstairs cloakroom - madness.

tt9 · 19/08/2023 02:19

where do I start.... kitchen sinks with sharp corners where all the dirt accumulates in the corners and almost impossible to get out...

electric hobs. no mate. I want real fire.

electric heating. just no.

single glaze windows. lots of steps to the front door.

tiny garden

lots of little rooms, no actual space in any of them. no flow in the layout.

everything matching. everything sparkly/glittery... I'm not a magpie.
