I love nothing more than a relaxing nosey on rightmove.

but want to share my dislikes.

new homes. Nothing wrong with them to live in. But we see nothing interesting in themes. They all look kinda “same”.

islands with a cooker or the main sink in them. Happy with a prep sink in them though

stairs in the living room

fully open plan

bedrooms off of the kitchen table or utility room

I just hate feature walls. They all look like the room is unfinished or they can't afford to wallpaper the rest of the room.

The word 'lounge'. It's a sitting room or a living room.
People who are snooty about new builds. Not everyone can afford to live in a character cottage. (For reference, I do not live in a new build, nor in a character cottge).
Kitchens that are designed for looks, rather than for cooking in. Cupboard handles that stick out so that you can walk into them or catch a sleeve on them.
En suites. I rejected a two-bedroomed house because it had an en suite, a 'family' bathroom AND a downstairs loo. Not best use of the space.
Plastic lawns, gardens paved over, trendy sculptural plants. Gardens are for growing things in.

Debini · 19/08/2023 17:29

I have a three bed, three bathroom 🤣 Works for us.

Can people not cope with sharing a bathroom. Yes because it’s not 1910 anymore.

In 1910, most people didn't have bathrooms at all. HTH.

Saz12 · 19/08/2023 17:47

Pictures that are ordered oddly - so pic of kitchen, then of a bedroom, then of another bit of the kitchen, then of a windowcill with a vase of twigs on it, then back to another kutchen shot, then a stunt pineapple in the shower....etc.

Erm... new builds are FAR more expensive than Victorian terraces. They are also far small and usually have issue.

I swear they are for people with lots of money and no sense. Unless you are custom building your own I wouldn't (and couldn't as Im not rich enough) touch them with a barge pole.

There a new build behind our house listed for £250,000 its HALF the size of our £90,000 victorian terrace... utterly insane. However it is classed as detached (with a hands width between it and the next property), has 4 beds (all the size of box rooms) and a garage (not big enough to actually fit a car in so the owners who I know have to park on the road).

Ketzele · 19/08/2023 18:55

My front door leads straight into my living room, where I also work and sleep. There are two stairways in the living room. The floor is nasty cheap laminate and the bathroom is cruddy. The house is dark and damp. There is no garden and we overlook a major junction. Good thing I'm in London or I would have to give up hope of ever selling!

HarrietJet · 19/08/2023 18:57

That would be very unusual.

WeWereInParis · 19/08/2023 19:17

Mine are en suites that have been shoved into the corner of a bedroom, without a window. Proper en suites are fine (by that I mean, a window, and not taking an odd chunk out of the bedroom), but a tiny damp box that there isn't really enough space for is not what I want.

And artificial grass. I will never buy a house with that crap in the garden.

As far as listings go, I agree that no floor plan is annoying.

Daphnis156 · 19/08/2023 19:31

Open plan and islands will I feel date badly.

Where are these cheap new builds you are finding?

I litrally posted the price difference... £250k new build vs £80k Victorian terrace where I live.

You did, but it certainly isn't the case everywhere.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/08/2023 19:49

Only last week I saw a house on Rightmove that had the front door opening into the bathroom. Yep, directly between the bath and the loo. Gobsmacked.

Come on, those having a good go at other people’s tastes, show us your perfect homes.

I quite like that bungalow in Plymouth, beautiful views, but what a strange layout.

If I'm paying hundreds of thousands then only my taste matter. You wont be moving into my house (my house being a rental so I didn't decorate it anyway).

I don't give a rats what your sofa is like or if you have photo frames saying prosecco time in glitter as you will take them when you leave but if you have ripped out all the walls and all character then yes its going to make me go 'pass'.

I can assume you have an open plan grey house full of box rooms with en suites, along with a white gloss kitchen + island and fake grass garden and are deeply hurt by finding out this is actually quite unpopular among buyers but if you love it then simply don't sell it.

Utility room leasing off into a separate room. Bothers me

Grey, ANYTHING GREY. Just screams chav.

Velvet sofas and beds. Big no.

Fluffy rugs.

Chanel books and typical decor

Yellow and red. Hate it in houses

I love all the above 🤣

My list of “don’t want” includes most of the ‘wanted features’ on Escape to the Country:
Listed - too much hassle to change what I don’t like
Belfast sink
Beams
Range cooker
Open plan
Woodburner/open fires

but agree with many pp’s about Metro tiles that look like an old public lavatory, but I also dislike this relatively recent fashion for large marble slab tiles coving all the walls of the bathroom - makes it look like a mausoleum.
Plastic grass
Front doors leading directly into front rooms and/or the sitting room being a passageway to the kitchen.
I also don’t like some paint/wallpaper fashions but most of that is easily changed, so not really important.

This thread does show how people tastes differ so much.

AgnestaVipers · 19/08/2023 20:42

Photos of door handles, vases and other random items that tell me nothing about the house.

The colour grey.

Modern kitchens of lurid colours (or grey/black).

Conservatories.

Gardens with astroturf.

'Live, laugh, Love' or similar in calligraphy on walls

Echobelly · 19/08/2023 20:51

I don't understand why a lot of new builds insist on a bathroom for every bedroom - even worse where a house has lost a bedroom for an extra bathroom. Why? Not everyone needs their own bathroom!

The thing that blows my mind is seeing £10m+ houses where they don't own any art. I mean, they'll have sent some interior designer out to get a job lot of black and white photos of classic hollywood stars, or garish oils of pugs or ballerinaa, or Banksy rip offs if they want to look edgy, but honestly, we have artwork worth more than these places in our fairly ordinary terraced house. Why would you have that much money and not buy something special to have in your home? Well, TBH, probably because it's one of 3+ homes you own I guess...
