Modest fashion

AIBU to dislike the term “modest fashion” when referring to Islamic dressing?

A spa local to me is doing a social media thing about welcoming all, including people who chose modest fashion, featuring two Muslim women, in fully covering swimsuits including head covering.

It feels like, by contrast, I’m being called immodest for dressings in a swim suit?

Oh dear.

Peony654 · 18/08/2023 15:35

Definitely not the case that wearing a bikini in a spa is being called immodest. What else are they meant to call it? They can't call it 'Muslim' fashion.

Inmybirthdaysuit · 18/08/2023 15:35

Nah, it's not about you.

Curledupwithabook · 18/08/2023 15:47

You realise that some Muslim women don't cover up, and some women - from other religions and cultures - do?
It isn't 'Islamic dressing'. And if you've got a problem with it I'd look at your own bias rather than expecting it to be changed.

LlynTegid · 18/08/2023 15:51

I understand wanting to welcome all women, not sure the spa has gone the right way about it.

You also don't need to be fashionable in what you wear.

5128gap · 18/08/2023 15:52

I've no idea why they can't just spell out what they mean. If they want to reassure women that they are welvome to wear swimwear that fully covers the body in their spa then just say so.

I think the people that it is aimed at will find the meaning very clear. There is even a photo according to the OP.

MakeMineAdoubleChocolate · 18/08/2023 16:03

I've noticed non muslim women buying muslim swimwear because they like the idea of being covered while swimming. Its not just a muslim / modest thing. Its like going to the beach. You have some people going in to the sea in tshirt and shorts, not everyone wants to wear bikini and everyone should be comfortable with what they want want to wear.

Anotherchristianmama · 18/08/2023 16:03

Oh get over yourself. If you are comfortable how you dress does it matter what other people think of it?

MNetcurtains · 18/08/2023 16:06

Some people really scrape the bottom of the barrel looking for something to be offended by.🙄

Indeed. But in a general sense I see little point in using euphemisms that have the potential to offend or be misunderstood when there's a perfectly adequate set of words that can clearly convey the intended meaning.

Girasoli · 18/08/2023 16:09

I think modest fashion works fine as a term, it's not just Muslim ladies, also some Jewish ladies and some Christians dress modestly.

It's not calling you immodest, just saying everyone is welcome to use the facilities (unlike some pools e.g. in France or Italy which are really strict on what people are allowed to wear)

EhrlicheFrau · 18/08/2023 17:34

Surely it's a given that anyone at a ladies session can wear whatever they feel comfortable swimming in, as long as it's proper swimwear? I don't care what the person next to me wears as long as it's not unsafe or see through, two piece, costume, leggings, long top, swim cap, swim hat, etc.....I actually do wish swimming caps were compulsory though, because that might stop me swimming through lumps of other people's long hair!

CurlewKate · 18/08/2023 17:38

Modest fashion is a widely understood term. I know both Christian and Jewish women who wear modest swimwear. Yes, you are BU

It took to me until about 4 messages down to realise you didn’t mean the Spa shop.

Fivethirtyeight · 18/08/2023 17:42

I’m not sure it is a euphemism.

I love the fact that long dresses, high necks and long sleeves are now freely available.

Much nicer than sun screen.

And at the other end, it’s so easy to buy crop tops that I could t find anywhere when I had abs.

TetrapanaxRex · 18/08/2023 17:45

Modest dressing is a great term to describe garments that are going to cover more of the body.

It doesn't mean that wearing clothes that cover less of the body are immodest.

That's your interpretation and wanting to be offended.

‘Set of words’ rather than one or 2- even that’s enough reason to use the term they have 🤣

I’d much rather be in a place where people are clothed and enjoying themselves rather than having all their bits out and me end up looking into someone’s chest or private parts.

i will never understand how walking around in the equivalent of underwear is fine but wearing more clothing is not?

AffIt · 18/08/2023 17:46

I have a friend who was very badly burned in a house fire as a teenager and has a lot of scarring on her upper body: she is very uncomfortable with exposing her torso or arms, so wears a high-necked rash vest to swim in.

Language like this applies to people like my friend.

ManateeFair · 18/08/2023 17:49

YABU, because there are other groups who prefer modest clothing. Some people wear modest dress for religious reasons - Muslims, certain Christian denominations, Orthodox Jewish people - and some people because they just prefer to cover up for their own personal reasons.

Calling a modest swimsuit 'Muslim' or 'Islamic' wouldn't be accurate, because that would imply that a) Muslims are the only people who might wear modest clothing and b) that you must dress modestly to call yourself a Muslim. Neither of those things is true. I work with Muslim women who wear modest dress and hijab, and I also work with Muslim women who don't feel the need to cover up at all. They're all still Muslims.

There is a 'modest' sportswear shop very near my house. They may have some Muslim customers but it's actually used almost entirely by Orthodox Jewish runners and gym-goers. I regularly see Charedi Jewish women on my local running route who wear knee-length gym skirts over leggings, long sleeved tops and sport-friendly head coverings.

Calibrachoa · 18/08/2023 17:51

I see what you mean op. Perhaps "full coverage" swimwear could be used as an alternative. I'm not sure why some of the responses are so annoyed with you saying you dislike a word and giving a reason why. They seem far more offended and angry than your post was! Perhaps they are "really scraping the bottom of the barrel for something to be offended about" 😉

ManateeFair · 18/08/2023 17:51

Oh, get over yourself

loislovesstewie · 18/08/2023 17:55

Well, periodically this topic comes up.I don't like the term because it implies that anything else is immodest. Saying full cover doesn't have the same connotation, at least to me. Wear what you like, but could we leave the morality out of it?

Calibrachoa · 18/08/2023 17:55

I've seen little girls' cycling shorts to be worn under school skirts referred to as modesty shorts too.

kelsaycobbles · 18/08/2023 17:56

I agree "full coverage " would be far less judgemental
