To think Tik Tok should be shut down

After reading about the James Bulger clips posted on Tik Tok I felt so angry, and sorry for James' parents.

I've always hated Tik Tok anyway, but it seems that nothing is sacred if they get the views that they want 😡

All social media needs better monitoring. It’s not specific to TikTok. It’s no worse than anywhere else.

Boudicasbeard · 18/08/2023 13:18

1000% agree

I’m a teacher and bloody Tick Tock seems to serve no other purpose than to create stupid, dangerous trends and bullying. What else is it good for?

bingojuice · 18/08/2023 13:22

I hate tiktok and deleted my account. It's a horrific place you only have to scroll through through the lives to see what a dangerous place it is and full of weirdos.

5imon · 18/08/2023 13:32

Can you really put the blame on TikTok for this? It is an AI generated clip. Some sicko created that. Not TikTok. If there was no TikTok it would be on some other site and probably is.

Mine isn't horrific. The algorithm mostly shows me cookery, music, interiors, holidays and funny stuff. If people are seeing lots of horrific videos it's because they're watching and interacting with them.

Randomlycreatedstringofletters · 18/08/2023 13:38

I am pro free speech but I do feel the internet needs to be "policed" or have restrictions placed on it to some level. An international agreement that is abided by perhaps.

Same here, mine is mainly cat stuff or work stuff

BecauseWeCanCanCan · 18/08/2023 13:44

My tiktok is mainly cats, baby goats, make up tips. I love it, it's very gentle.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 18/08/2023 13:48

The younger generations who now see TikTok as normal and watch it often will be interesting to study from a psychological aspect.

In my opinion it’s a platform which was created with the intention to slowly destabilise social constructs in the West, with whole swathes of various tribes believing much of what they see on TT without question are the new brainwashed cult followers.

Mix in AI advances and malevolent content creators and it becomes a malignant force that is very difficult to control.

bingojuice · 18/08/2023 13:48

@doroda have you scrolled through the lives? Mine was filled with only fans girls sitting about in next to nothing promoting their "spicy page". Kids talking about suicide. The like of that Chelsea woman arguing with people in restaurants and shops. The weirdo who thinks he's a woman and a witch. It's a dangerous place and no place for kids for sure.

Mine is mostly horses and vegetarian cooking. But I’m not an impressionable child or teenager. My relative told me recently about a child who died in her local primary for trying out a stupid tik Tok challenge/trend.

Rollercoaster1920 · 18/08/2023 14:07

Didn't TikTok start with young girls / women doing dances to canned music? And the video starts immediately so the first shot is a cleavage shot.

I thought TikTok was designed by pervs because of that, so never used it!

arethereanyleftatall · 18/08/2023 14:07

I love my tik tok. It's my go to if I want to smile. My feed has only ever been my favourite comedians, cool dances and kids doing cute things. It cheers me up every time. Oh, and the countdown conundrum.

Weefreetiffany · 18/08/2023 14:09

I’m not one for the conspiracy theories, but the one that TikTok is spyware for the Chinese government that is also designed to make us stupider would be the theory I would bet on being true.

My teenager follows English GCSE exam markers giving exam revision tips.

And also shite.

Desperatetime · 18/08/2023 14:12

Same.

Mine is mainly fitness, interiors, and comedy related.

All social media has dark sides.

I’m willing to bet that this relative is misinformed.

100% this.
It's probably on every other social media site, video hosting site, and a bunch of forums.

Plus - a users TikTok feed is based on that specific user's history, likes, and aggregated tracking data. So what you have shown on your feed has been designated as something you've previously shown interest in.

YoBeaches · 18/08/2023 14:19

I think if a platform can't actually govern it's own policies that should keep it as a safe platform, then there should be some protocol for ceasing it's availability.

This content remained available despite it breaching their own policies. It's mid management on the part of Tik tok.

You can't stop the sickos making it, but we can do significantly better at how easy it is to publish and potentially earn income from it.

Boudicasbeard · 18/08/2023 14:45

@testina

That stuff is in millions other places. Not exclusive to Tik Tok at all.

Have you ever asked your teen about the stuff they see on social media by accident? I have had some ver y illuminating conversations with kids in the last year about the things they get sent/ tagged in- suicide, snuff porn, humiliation porn all sorts of incredibly fucked up things that they didn’t go looking for but we’re sent and innocently clicked on. When ask none of them had talked to their parents about it but had been quite traumatised by what they’d seen.

Just because social media has some helpful bits doesn’t mean it is overall harmful- incredibly warping for teenagers.

I find the lives boring but when I have scrolled them it's been pretty gentle...People DJing, live streams of karaoke nights, city webcams, boring stuff like "name a film and I'll rate it out of 10" or "I'll guess your starsign from your profile pic", girls doing their makeup, people streaming from their workplace like packing at Amazon...haven't seen onlyfans or suicide content but perhaps the lives work around your algorithm too.
