To think Tik Tok should be shut down

After reading about the James Bulger clips posted on Tik Tok I felt so angry, and sorry for James' parents.

I've always hated Tik Tok anyway, but it seems that nothing is sacred if they get the views that they want 😡

I think the people that say, oh it’s fine I just look at recipes and cat videos… are massively missing the point. A great many people don’t use it like that and it clearly has lots of pretty toxic material.

You can get all those recipes and cat videos from YouTube and YouTube shorts. But there is at least some form of moderation on YT, and if be surprised if the video the Op talks about was available there.

Also I understand that by signing up, you’re basically giving free access to all sorts of data on your phone, which then gets sold off and distributed to, well pretty much everywhere.

Ban it I say. I certainly won’t let ds anywhere near it.

But here you are, on the internet, which is full of toxic material and people who don't use it like you do...

notlucreziaborgia · 18/08/2023 17:17

As if a ban wouldn’t be incredibly simple to get around.

I hate tic toc for young people who stumble across all sorts of horrible stuff on it. There is some vile content and doesn't seem easy to restrict who sees it.

Can you really put the blame on TikTok for this? It is an AI generated clip. Some sicko created that. Not TikTok. If there was no TikTok it would be on some other site and probably is.

I absolutely love the AI generated true crime toks Blush

Lonelycrab · 18/08/2023 17:46

But here you are, on the internet, which is full of toxic material

But the thread isn’t about the internet in general is it, it’s about one particular app and the way it works. This is just a forum mainly for parents and it’s not stuffed full of toxic material with algorithms to feed toxic viewing habits. Bit different I’d say.

Seeing as you’re obviously a TT fan, are you perfectly happy about all the information in your phone being harvested and basically sold to whoever wants to buy it? I wouldn’t be.

bingojuice · 18/08/2023 18:04

It says a lot when it was created in China but banned in China 🤦🏻‍♀️ they don't want their using it but they make a fortune from it.
Infact if you've never watched the social dilemma on Netflix I suggest everyone do so it's mental and jaw dropping. The creators of the social media platforms openly say they don't and wouldn't let their kids use social media 🤯 even though they've built it.

It works on algorithms; if you’re seeing nasty stuff then it’s because it thinks you like it - you’re telling us more about yourself than you think really

I think this is a fairly common, but naive view.

Algorithms mean you are very unlikely to see things outside your selective bubble. However, platforms including TikTok are updated to avoid repetitive recommendations. Again - unlikely to be eg OnlyFans content but bots are becoming better and better at 'beating' algorithms.

If I were 25 years younger I'd love to do research into algorithms & social impact.

Fivethirtyeight · 18/08/2023 18:28

It’s important not to ban anything unless it damages someone else’s property.

Any kind of censorship leads to business taking the safe line and self censoring more.

So anything that Govt or fashionable lobbies don’t like can’t be said.

Then think of the cost of policing it. Not by Govt. By the business which must instal expensive safeguards.

Im not going to look at that horrible footage. I hate to think about poor Jamie. But it’s worth it to avoid censorship.

Herejusttocomment · 18/08/2023 18:35

Gah, I bloody abhor TikTok!
First off, I have issues getting the algorithm to work for me, it keeps showing me random stuff I'm not remotely interested in, I follow completely different types of accounts btw, then from time to time an absolute asshole pops up on my fyp and I have no way to block or unlike to mark I'm not interested.

Then, the misinformation it spreads! Anyone with any knowledge (or no knowledge) can make a video and it go viral, then people start taking what this random person said as gospel.

It obviously has its good parts like every other social media, but they really need to monitor it better and sort out that algorithm.

MyChemicalMummy · 18/08/2023 18:37

I love a bit of tik toc, mines all metal bands, art and halloween. I watch tic tok on my Huawel phone so I'm probably fucked!

FannyCann · 18/08/2023 18:38

Haven't read the thread so apologies if it's already been posted but just popping on to post a link to this Twitter thread. Apparently there's a Tiktok trend of cooking with your toddler, cracking the eggs on their foreheads and laughing about it as they cry and posting it on Tiktok🤷‍♀️

I'd love to see every one of them investigated by social services and sent on a parenting course.

So yes, Tiktok is a cess pit.
When these attention seeking mothers want more attention and ramp up their videos what practical "jokes" will they inflict on their children then?

And don't get me started on other social contagions amongst younger users.

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 18:45

That's awful, problem is ghouls will click on it

And I'm so glad I grew up without social media

peelyjuice · 18/08/2023 18:49

created what you perceive to be inappropriate.

Perceived?

Herejusttocomment · 18/08/2023 18:49

And yes, it bloody is the fault of the app, I shouldn't have to take a course to be able to use it effectively!

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 18/08/2023 18:54

What about instagram, facebook, twitter ,youtube etc?

ImthatBoleyngirl · 18/08/2023 19:21

I love it! Mine is just funny dog/cat videos, horses and gymnastics

Simonjt · 18/08/2023 19:26

I like it, my FYP is mainly cats, dogs, heartstopper and cleaning. I do think however that all social media needs to be better policed, not just tiktok.

I play rugby with a guy whose boyfriend has made a career via tiktok, bizarre really, but he’s made enough money to buy them a sizeable house outright in North London and as he had a decent career already, when it fizzles out he won’t be left in limbo.

Floogal · 18/08/2023 19:29

I've seen that (on YouTube shorts) and I thought it was creepy. Didn't watch the whole thing. Not just James Bulger either, lots of other very young murder victims too.

Another disturbing short is a 'comedy' one. A young sleeping woman getting slapped in the vagina by her mum.
