To think Tik Tok should be shut down

After reading about the James Bulger clips posted on Tik Tok I felt so angry, and sorry for James' parents.

I've always hated Tik Tok anyway, but it seems that nothing is sacred if they get the views that they want 😡

I swear TikTok was designed by the Chinese to destabilise western society.

I’m based in China and we don’t have tic tok actually. It’s original name is dou yin and there’s zero offensive content, sure regulation probably plays a role in that but I think the users are also different in terms of what they would post.

So what I think is that western countries are have a greater number of narcissistic posters, and it’s probably just an extension of what people experience in real life too.

And I'm so glad I grew up without social media

Oh God, me too! I spent the long summer holidays playing in nearby woods with my friends, catching frogs and generally having the time of my life 😊

Mine isn't horrific. The algorithm mostly shows me cookery, music, interiors, holidays and funny stuff. If people are seeing lots of horrific videos it's because they're watching and interacting with them.

Same here, mine is mainly cat stuff or work stuff

Cats
Mobility exercises
recipes
House maintenance.

Nah mate you get scum bags everywhere. It's not just the west that is full of undesirables, the difference is peeps in china simply disappear 'pof' gone just like that. Would you rather live in a place with 100% censorship or zero censorship? That's the question.

Anetra · 20/08/2023 02:19

Mine is Johnny depp trial clips - all week 😱

Douyin is more tightly regulated than tiktok because the whole Chinese internet is really strict on violence/pornographic stuff etc, but also yeah, I do think Chinese people tend to be less into some of the stuff people are complaining about upthread. Of course there are scumbags everywhere, but I think dark stuff would not be successful on Chinese social media even if it were allowed.

Also, your view of China is incredibly reductive.

OpinionatedPoster · 20/08/2023 02:46

TikTok is no worse than Instagram or Reddit IMO. The "front page" of Reddit for instance is full of misogyny and polarising content. I used to frequent Reddit, only going on the "popular" and "all" pages, and found myself developing such a hateful and cynical view of people and the world. It's a social media issue, not a TikTok issue.

WandaWonder · 20/08/2023 02:53

So every time a minority does something wrong it should be banned for all?, that is a ridiculous idea

I would like people to be able to be charged with a crime if they do something wrong but as tiktok is world wide no idea how they would work in reality.

elifont · 20/08/2023 03:05

That's one video in thousands that's bad! James Bulger is a really hard story to even talk about because of 2 horrific kids. But it's still a rare thing that happened. But the psychopaths who tortured a boy being let out of prison, new identities etc because there's no real justice is way worse than a Til tok video

catin8oots · 20/08/2023 03:41

Has anyone else found in the last couple of days that their TikTok is just constant ads? I think I scrolled 20 today before I lost count with no genuine videos in between

sashh · 20/08/2023 06:46

Tik Tok is just a platform, it is the people using it who should be controlled.

How that control happens is what should be debated.

Caprisunny · 20/08/2023 06:57

Don’t be ridiculous. The people who create this content would still be sick bastards with or without social media.

Jumping straight to banning a whole platform because some people use it in a negative way is a completely hysterical reaction.

It’s odd you choose social media (yes MN is social media) to talk about this. It’s like banning MN because of the Piss troll. Or Poo troll. Or the sickle that try and start the ‘tell me about your daughters first period’. All sick bastards.

I am most concerned about teachers who think tiktok is about creating stupid trends. People create stupid trends. TikTok doesn’t. Stupid trends were I thing in the 80s. And before. Without the use of social media they were more localised but still happened. If yea hers are finding a social media platform seems to be the source of problems, maybe they should learn more about the platform. Maybe learn to use it and see what good it can be used for. Maybe understand it’s not all dancing and pranks. It might change your view of what the core problem is.

Most peoples feed isn’t dangerous or sick. My is full of excel videos, embroidery, dogs videos, history and archeology and interior design. Tiktok can be amazing for learning things. We have a database of tiktok videos for excel, at work. Find the key word and you have a quick video to show how to do something quite complex.

If your reaction is ‘this tiny part of something is bad, so let’s ban the thing’ I think you might need to look at why you jump to that.

We don’t ban books, the internet, teachers, schools, hospitals and so on because some people have used these things in a vile way. Why would we start now and do we really want to go down that route?

lljkk · 20/08/2023 07:06

If you don't like TikTok, then you really don't want to know about Rumble or BitChute.

iloveeverykindofcat · 20/08/2023 07:06

I'm a sociologist and my interest is digital media. I've always said that if I had children TikTok is the one app I really would attempt to ban them from. Probably a futile attempt but I'd try. It's less damaging to people over 25 who have already developed critical discernment and a solid attention span, but it's still not good.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 20/08/2023 07:17

My TikTok feeds are full of horses, cooking, dogs, cats, workplace humour, vets, soaps/wax melts and stand up up comedy, plus some practical joke family vlog things.

My lives are the same - plus people singing or filming from their workplaces.

TikTok is what you make of it. Of course there's some grim stuff out there but that's the same for any website.

But Rumble, Odysee, Bitchute or Vimeo would be ok? Why?
