So. Can anyone solve an argument …
husband is demanding a ‘ ninja foodie flex drawer’ becuase he thinks it will be a good investment. on the other hand I think it’s a waste of money….. I mean we can afford it … but it feels extreme, we have an oven already ! Any one say it’s a life changer … if not I’m not interested !

Dh bought the ninja foodie max, I think it is. It's a pain in the arse. Takes up the only decent prep area in the kitchen. We're a family of 6, cannot cook for 6 in it unless it's soup etc so not saving time or effort at all. I burn myself in the fecker everytime, granted I do have a disability related to my hands and I do tend to burn them on the oven but certainly not every time.

They're definitely not much use for cooking in this quantity. Occasionally I might do fish and chips for three plus two children and it just takes that.

Having said that I do love mine, there are normally just two of us, occasionally DD +2GC and it's fine.
If your's is the same one as mine it has a pretty big base and will take, say, fish fillets, chops or steak for 6 if you're serving them with rice or mash.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/08/2023 18:57

You do need to buy one with the right capacity for what you want to do!

A small single drawer version if you want to make multiple ovened/roasted items for a large family will absolutely be bloody useless - thats a fault of the buyer, not the gadget!

You can get little racks/shelves to put in so you can cook a layer of something on the bottom then another layer of something else above though they then need to cook at the same temp at least (put the longer timed thing in the bottom then open up and add the shorter cooking time thing on the shelf part way through).

I do think people who struggle with them, had no idea how/what they'd use them for and got the wrong size - it can be hard to figure out how you'd use one/what you use one for until you get one (there are youtube videos which in theory are helpful but in reality tend to be presented by fucking AWFUL people who make your ears bleed).

I'll add, could the people who love theirs give some ideas of the types of food you find it convenient / good for? - we don't eat much friend food and almost cook from scratch but do use the oven quite a bit for baking/roasting things.

I cook-steak-perfect
home made burgers (no shrinkage and really juicy)
chicken in many forms
roast veg
bread, cakes.
chips
roasts
i got silicone liners and even cook saucy things in it (I got the Instant vortex plus versazone, so it’s got one big drawer but you can cook in either side. Roasts, grills air fries, dehydrates)
we got a cheap one first, loved it so got this one. Currently about 150 in Argos Amazon and Lakeland. The cheap one went to my son.

faban · 18/08/2023 19:03

Brought one at Xmas and my oven only goes on now for pizzas. I don't know how I coped without it. I've got the ninja dual air fryer

I have the Ninja Foodi MAX Health Grill and Air Fryer [AG551UK] which doesn't have the divided drawer. I've had it for two years and love it. I can see the point of the division so you can use two cooking temps/times but most of what I cook can be done at the same temperature anyway, I just add the one that needs the least cooking later, as you would in a normal oven. Mine does have a temperature probe which I love, particularly when you're at the learning stage and don't know how long things will take. I think that there may be a similar Ninja two drawer model with a probe.
Someone suggested the multi-cooker version as it has a pressure cooker and is more versatile - this is what I would like, but the reviews for most of them say that there can be problems with the catches on the lids which stop them working. Also I already use a pressure cooker so I know it could be useful but I wonder if you would actually use it? I can certainly manage with my ordinary pressure cooker until I need to replace my current Ninja with a more reliable model.
I'd say go for it, whichever model he insists on - it's likely he'd use it and you'd have more time to do other things. But perhaps make it clear in advance that this is what you are expecting?!

Depends what you eat already. If you eat a lot of meat, processed food, or fried food then get it as it will definitely save you time and money. If, however, you mostly bake from scratch then it’s not really a decent subsitute.

Don't agree with this statement at all

masterblaster · 18/08/2023 19:05

Ignore your husband. Get a top of the line Ninja Foodi (they are also air fryers, just also a pressure cooker, oven, and a whole load of other things). I use mine every day, the oven barely goes on now.

Daphnis156 · 18/08/2023 19:06

The oven has lasted a few thousand years in one form or other.

These fussy fads fade fast.

Ostryga · 18/08/2023 19:07

The two drawer is REALLY useful if you have fussy kids.

I can cook DD’s and my dinner at the same time, completely different things, timings etc and we can both eat at the same time.

That was an absolute game changer for me. Not having to eat the same things as dd just so I didn’t have to cook twice!

Air fryers have been around for decades in professional kitchens. Only recently that they’ve gained commercial success.

I mean... it is an oven.

A smaller capacity, faster heating, more efficient fan circulated... oven.

The name air-fryer is probably the worst thing they could have called it. 'EcoOven' would be more accurate.

Jack80 · 18/08/2023 19:12

We now only use the oven for pizza and jacket potatoes. It’s the future having an air fryer. x

Diva66 · 18/08/2023 19:26

Yes, we haven’t used the main oven since I bought the Ninja. Uses a lot less power too.

ErinBell01 · 18/08/2023 19:30

I've used my oven twice since I got mine last November. And all the food tastes better! I've never had roast pork as tender and moist like it. I love mine!! Get one!

Kimbrulait · 18/08/2023 19:47

Get the air fryer!!!!!

fifteenfifty · 18/08/2023 20:09

I am obsessed with mine! Oven is yesterday's news!

laylababe5 · 18/08/2023 20:16

It's a life changer! We have a Ninja Foodi 15-in1 with a 6.5L pot. We use it several times a week and have had it since January when we got it for €350, down from €550. I was sceptical at first but my partner was buying it with One 4 All vouchers he got as a work Christmas bonus so I didn't object. I literally just finished eating a very tasty baked ham. 1 hour on the pressure cooker function (2kg weight) and 5 minutes with the air fryer function at the end to crisp up the skin. One of my favourite things to make in it is beef and barley stew. I saute the veggies for 5 minutes then throw in the beef, barley (not pre-soaked), stock, and some herbs and pressure cook for 20 minutes. It's really delicious. And of course chips are lovely in it and cook in 12 minutes. It's also very easy to clean. i say if you are getting a Ninja and can afford to spend a bit more you might as well spend the extra to get one with as many functions as possible. I wouldn't be without ours now.

Maltybiscuit · 18/08/2023 20:18

The ninja Speedi has been a game changer for me , I bake cakes , roast meats , slow cook , a Sunday lunch in 16 minutes , never switched the oven on since , even has a saute setting so barely use the hob either.
You won't regret it

Ruthdpl · 18/08/2023 20:20

I currently have custody of my daughter’s Ninja air fryer with 2 drawers, while they have builders in. It’s alright for cooking for kids (one wants fish fingers, one wants sausages) but it does take up a lot of counter space - and I have quite a big kitchen. I can see the benefits but wouldn’t buy one for myself.

SiliconHeaven · 18/08/2023 20:37

I have a tower one, cost about £30, it’s fantastic, I would recommend it over the ridiculously expensive ninja

FlipFlop1987 · 18/08/2023 20:42

Oh how I love Ninjas. Have the 9-in-1 and the Foodie Max Grill. Moved in a new build house last year and the oven still looks as new as the day we moved in. They cook in at least 20% less time, everything is so much easier to turn and keep an eye on, there’s functions such as pressure cook that make amazing stews and softest roasts.
I use the Max Grill at least once every single day, heat pastries, makes toasties, all your frozen chips, nuggets, fish fingers etc come out so crispy. We do big dishes in it like lasagne and cottage pies. Then cleaning them is a doddle. I could go on and on!

BarbaraofSeville · 18/08/2023 04:09

Not sure it particularly does anything a decent oven can’t, and not sure how long it would take to recoup the initial outlay in saved energy costs given the average oven costs about 20p an hour to run or something

Ovens probably cost more like £1 an hour, while it's heating up anyway. Air fryers cost half that, but they're also much quicker, and you don't have to watch them like you do a grill and they turn off at the end of a cycle so you don't have to worry about being present immediately to check/turn off to stop things burning, you can happily get on with something else knowing that it's OK to come back 5/10 mins after the end of the programme and your food won't be burnt.

We have 2 ovens (we got them when we had the kitchen done a few years ago and got two single built in ovens with grills so we could grill and oven at the same time) and I'm seriously thinking about taking one of them out and putting the air fryer in the space as we've used one occasionally (for pizza and cheese on toast) and can't see how we'll ever need 2 ovens at the same time again.

FYI air fryer cheese on toast is amazing!

Me neither, they’re small ovens so absolutely everything you cook in an oven can be done in it. If you get a Ninja Foodi they have a sauté function so that’s a built in hob too.

That’s definitely a comment from someone who’s never used a Ninja before!

CoreopsisEverywhere · 18/08/2023 20:49

I have a Ninja 15 in 1. It’s useful but I don’t love it and I think things taste better cooked in a normal oven.

it isn’t big enough to cook for a family but it’s useful if teens need to cook something for themselves in a hurry.
