To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

Just replaced our 19 year old LG with a new LG machine, direct drive, 10kg - has a very short cycle if needed (20 - 30 minutes), with a variety of temps and spins, plus will accommodate extra rinses and spins, alongside my favourite feature of being able to open the door to throw in the sock that you miss. None of the cycles are five hours! Some cycles do hold and soak, perhaps that might be what's happening and not sure you want a washer to agitate clothing for too long, as what's left when the doors open!

Georgyporky · 17/08/2023 12:57

I do a full load in my Samsung @ 40C & it starts off at 1hr29 mins, then usually changes to 1hr18mins after weighing.

No I’m not, and I say this as someone who has worked in the fire service.
This is a random google hit but every area will say the same.

Fire service warning over household appliance fire risk

We are warning the public over the potential dangers of running large household appliances while unattended after a number of accidental house fires recently.

I would never advocate washing only at 20-30 degrees. Bad news for your washing machine and hygiene

IsGoodIsDon · 17/08/2023 13:00

Since the ridiculous rise in electricity prices I started using a cold 30 mins wash for most of my clothes. For my kids extra dirty clothes they sometimes need a little extra but I haven’t noticed a difference in how clean our clothes are. I also stopped using fabric conditioner and saving just from that with the added bonus of it not causing buildup in the dispenser drawer and probably the rest of the machine as well.

Tiddlywinks63 · 17/08/2023 13:00

EhrlicheFrau · 17/08/2023 12:43

Most cycles will still agitate the clothes a fair bit, just that longer soaking does help clean most clothing.

My Bosch has an ‘Allergies’ setting, I presume it isn’t the only brand with this.
I use the 40° shirt wash or the 30° darks one, each is 1 hour 5 minutes.
I do have eco wash settings but they’re 3 - 4 hours and I cba , I just want to get the washing done (probably 3 or 4 loads a week? Only two of us here)

Badbudgeter · 17/08/2023 13:00

3h 49 for me which I also think is a pisstake tbh even the eco 20 is 1h 50 alternative is a 15 minute which is more of a good rinse than a wash.

Bonfire23 · 17/08/2023 13:00

GreekDogRescue · 17/08/2023 12:38

It’s ridiculous. My hot point does a 14 minute wash at 40 and that’s good enough for loads that aren’t very dirty.
imagine if you were washing by hand, 5 minutes seems like a long time.
sorry but I don’t believe 5 hours is remotely ‘eco friendly’, what a con.
I like my laundrette where I can do a 60 or 90 degree wash that is only 30 mins but that’s for dogs stuff.

It's not a con.
Longer washes rely on soaking and shorter ones don't
Imagine lying in a bath for 5hrs vs showering with a power shower for 1hr

NeverNoMore221 · 17/08/2023 13:00

Fooksticks · 17/08/2023 11:49

I don't know why you don't consider a 20 minute wash a proper wash?

5 hours is ridiculous and the damage to the stuff in the washer must be huge if they're washed like that often.

20 minutes?

Are you my MIL? She washes everything at 30 degrees for 15 minutes. 🤢🤢🤢

WannabeMathematician · 17/08/2023 13:00

What at the odds of a fire though? Is it more or less likely that I’ll die in a car accident or from a electrical fire from my washing machine?

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/08/2023 13:01

EmmaEmerald · 17/08/2023 11:53

Agree
my bestie literally chose a new machine by googling what has the shortest cycles

if you're working at home and don't have kids, I think a short cycle is important! Washing gym kit and bedding is different.

I did exactly this. Appreciate the eco options but I do t have time for them. I tend to do the washing in one day over maybe 5 loads.

I ended up with a hoover as the herbal
40 degree is 1hr20 and the quick wash 15 or
30. And it doesn't bloody sing at me until i pay it attention like the pre ious amazing did.

See my original post; I’d likely have faced a house fire if I hadn’t been around when out last one went, and someone else above had the same. Why risk it?

manontroppo · 17/08/2023 13:02

ReviewingTheSituation · 17/08/2023 12:39

Both.

Surely you can get on with other things whilst the machine is running?

If you're drying stuff on a line you want to get through as many loads as possible first thing in the morning, so you get a whole day's drying.

I can do a load overnight, get it out on the line first thing, next load on and out after breakfast and then another load washed and on the line before lunch, so all afternoon to dry (heavy stuff goes in overnight so it gets longest on the line). You can get 3 or 4 loads dry that way.

I agree, mentioned further above our washing machine broke and had a smokey smell fill the whole house (it scared the life out of me). Will only put it on in the morning, before work on a 1 hour 20 cycle. If the weather’s bad, i’ll tumble dry when im back from work. Would never leave either machine going without someone home.

Who is routinely doing 3 or 4 loads a day though?

A 15 minute wash isn't getting anything clean. And if it is, it wasn't dirty enough to need washing.

I am dreading having to get a new machine as my old one offers 30 and 44 quick wash options.

same! I have had my Bosch for so many years and only just discovered a 40 degree 'mixed' wash setting which is 48 minutes!

@idebtiy I think washing dirty underwear and sheets at very low temperatures for 15 minutes is gross. I haven't and won't try it!!

I shower daily and wash underwear and tops after every wear at 40 degrees. I have a 45 minute cycle in my machine.

Trousers and skirts I wear many more more times and am happy to wash at 30 degrees for 30 minutes.

Sheets and towels get washed at 60 degrees.

I risk of lot of things every day. I drive a car, I ride a bike on busy roads, I climb play equipment, I eat bad food. I want to know if it's more likily to kill me or not. I can't live life without risk. There are 28 million house holds in the UK, assume 3 washes a week, that's approx 4,370,000,000 washes a year. 20,000 electrical fires in total (not just washing machines) about 0.005 chance of a fire?

Which is apparently roughly the chance of being killed in a road accident every year.

I'll take those odds.

My machine is seriously ancient but still going strong (good old German technology)

30 degree wash or special washes like jeans silks take around an hour or just under
40 degree wash which we use most often takes an hour and a half
60 degree wash for towels/bedding takes 2 hours 20 mins

I understand the eco reasoning (more soaking, less power) but I'm glad mine doesnt take hours and hours!
