To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

Thats crazy? So if you put it on when you wake up, theres no chance of getting it out on the line before going out to work/school run? Not very energy efficient! I’d have to sell it as hang my washing out every day the weather is good.

Could it be that you press a button and more options are available? Have you called the cutomer care line?

MrsCarson · 17/08/2023 12:36

I really don't get this.
Does an Eco wash mean it saves water? Or Does it mean it uses less electricity?
If it's less electricity I'd use it, but somehow running the machine for 3 or 5 hours seems excessive.
I'd stick it on 20 min cycle twice and gt the loads finished so I can get one with other things.

AnnaMagnani · 17/08/2023 12:37

I have a Samsung which I love because of the tune

I'd only use the cotton wash if something was horrendously dirty. Otherwise the Daily wash is fine.

You can always run it overnight or use the time-saver.

Isitautumnyet23 · 17/08/2023 12:38

Just to add, we have a Beko 10 kg and it has so many different options. Cottons is 1 hour 20 mins so perfect for getting washing out in the morning.

Aintnosupermum · 17/08/2023 12:38

It’s ridiculous and I have yet to see how the clothes end up cleaner or less resources are used. We aren’t in the deepest part of a desert with zero water.

This summer I was in the UK and doing the laundry became a job. 3 hour cycle followed by drying on the line meant I was always doing laundry. I was on holiday and doing 2-3 hours of work a day so I need laundry to be a chore, not a job.

The shower heads saving water drive me insane. I have a lot of hair. I probably use 2-3x more water than something with some umph.

GreekDogRescue · 17/08/2023 12:38

It’s ridiculous. My hot point does a 14 minute wash at 40 and that’s good enough for loads that aren’t very dirty.
imagine if you were washing by hand, 5 minutes seems like a long time.
sorry but I don’t believe 5 hours is remotely ‘eco friendly’, what a con.
I like my laundrette where I can do a 60 or 90 degree wash that is only 30 mins but that’s for dogs stuff.

Of course there's more options available. OP is just grumping about one cycle when its clear she hasn't tried other options or read the manual.

Both.

Surely you can get on with other things whilst the machine is running?

MillWood85 · 17/08/2023 12:40

I've got a Samsung and that's the eco cycle. The daily wash at 1hr 5 mins is OK for freshening things up, but the standard mixed cycle is around 2hrs 30 mins and things come out perfectly clean.

You need to check the weight allowance for quick wash - sometimes it only states 2kg of clothes to be effective.

Saves both. No lecky at all is used for the most of the cycle. The clothes are just soaking without the drum moving or the water being heated.

(Eco bonus: apart from using less electricity and water it also means your clothes last longer.)

Longer cycles use less water, and less energy for heating and agitation.

madeinmanc · 17/08/2023 12:42

Just soaking the clothing isn't really cleaning them. That's why if you have serious allergies you're in a mess these days.

Most cycles will still agitate the clothes a fair bit, just that longer soaking does help clean most clothing.

But you would never be able to get the washing out before work/school run. I’d say the majority of the working age population are out the house between 8-9am in the morning. Her washing would need to start at 2am - which I would never do having our machine break mid cycle and a very strong smokey smell through the house. I saud after that i’d only be home with the washing going.

RunningFromInsanity · 17/08/2023 12:46

My new machine only really has 28mins or 3hr40 eco options which really pisses me off. I assumed it would have a 1-2hr option.

rainbowstream · 17/08/2023 12:49

That’s ridiculous . Ours is 2-3 hrs for a standard wash but I always press the shorter cycle button which is 1hr 11 mins and that works perfectly fine. The quick wash is 28 mins but I only use that in an emergency.

You’re not supposed to leave washing machines unattended due to the fire risk (I.e. you should be in the house/ not asleep) so very lengthy cycles are hard to fit in. Our last machine overheated and leaked at the same time and I was lucky I was around to notice and turn it off.

It’s Beko

Clefable · 17/08/2023 12:51

Yeah I think it depends on your washing system. We both WFH and we are on an electricity tariff where the price changes every half hour; we just put stuff on whenever it's cheapest, so a longer cycle doesn't really impact us too much as we can put it on any time (I've just put one on now as price has dropped to 16p per KWh). And we don't hang washing out so don't need to factor that in. But if you are working out of house all day and want to hang washing up, then it could really put a wrench in your system!

I just always used the “mixed load” setting which is considerably shorter than the cottons wash.

That poster (who turned out to be a pbp troll by the way) was advocating a 15 degree wash at 30 degrees only.

This OP is complaining about 5 hours as opposed to a more normal length 2-3 hour wash

Chypre · 17/08/2023 12:56

Are you sure you don't have any other setting enabled by default, like eco or silent motor or night wash or something similar? Maybe prewash + extra rinse + reduced creases. If I enable all sorts of extras then I do get 5hr on my new Bosch but bare standard cotton program on full 8kg load (bedding) is under 3hrs.

silverbubbles · 17/08/2023 12:57

Are you sure you have not clicked on the economy version of that wash. My machine does very long washes if i click eco
