It doesn't matter if you don't like football, or if you don't like sport this tournament and this game is about so much more than that.

  • it's about showing women's sport is worthy of investment.
  • it's about giving different role models to young and particularly teenage girls.
  • it's about showing rivalry in performance but not through violence.
  • it's about showing our daughters they matter as much as our sons.
  • it's about showing women they can be coaches and compete with men on an equal footing.
  • it's about highlighting the battles women from many countries have undergone to get to this tournament.
  • it's about showing homophobia has no place in team sports.

And it's about giving women a voice in their sport.

The Spanish team are there in spite of their coach and have some really disturbing stories about how players have been treated. Without any eyes on women's sport these sorts of issues are allowed to take root.

There is already enough wanging on about football. Cannot get excited at yet more appearing on the TV.

luckylavender · 18/08/2023 08:08

I'd love to but I'm travelling hundreds of miles to visit my very elderly very sick parents. I'm a massive football fan and find your post insensitive actually.

Cardboardcup · 18/08/2023 08:10

They’ve been brilliant so far so will definitely be watching. I’m not a football fan but during world cups I turn into a loud football expert much to my husbands amusement!

So you paid (as none of the freely available channels show much Equestrian any more) for an H&C subscription to watch the European eventing championship? A sport, as with other equestrian sports, that is arguably an even better demonstration of equality given that women compete against men on equal footing?

The championship that GB came away with team gold in (achieved by the all female team) AND individual gold AND individual silver?^

A sport, which at grassroots is overwhelmingly enjoyed by female participants? A sport which we as a nation are historically phenomenal at? And yet totally ignored by mainstream media?

^the most outrageous thing about this performance is it’s actually technically a drop from the last European Eventing championship where we got team gold and all the individual medals. We’re really good at eventing.

LOL-ing at "grassroots" eventing.

One of the joys of football is that it can be played and enjoyed by everyone, (although it has historically been closed to many women and girls). All you need is a ball.

1dayatatime · 18/08/2023 09:57

@Biker47

"To put some numbers in there, this woman's world cup is estimated to bring in maybe $500 million, I believe the last men's world cup brought in around $6 billion, there's the only gap worth mentioning."

++++

I completely agree and the only way to close this gap is if more men and women watch women's football.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/08/2023 10:01

@MasterBeth
Yes and all you need for eventing is a horse and a few acres. 🤣

Iwasafool · 18/08/2023 10:07

I hope someone explains to Michael Gove that the whole nation isn't ready to get behind the Lionesses this Sunday because some of us couldn't care less. I hate it when politicians or TV pundits tell me what I'm supposed to be thinking/feeling.

I heard him say this earlier this morning! It really gets my goat....I couldn't care less about football no matter who plays it, he doesn't speak for me!

Purplebunnie · 18/08/2023 10:19

Nope hate football and I'll be watching the rugby instead.

Sorry it wound you up as well but I'm sort of glad I'm not the only one. He's got a bloody cheek speaking for us without asking what we think.

Doone21 · 18/08/2023 14:03

Ridiculous . It's not the only sport women compete in. Just as relevant to support ladies rugby, swimming, hockey, cycling,

It’s not remotely ridiculous to ask - not order - that some of us watch and support the women’s football if we possibly can. Op even when to the trouble of explaining in detail why.

I fail to see where in her post op is saying we shouldn’t watch other women’s sports too! So why all of the outrage on here?

I ride horses and I am a huge supporter of equestrian sports for example. They are not mutually exclusive! I like to support women in all of their sporting endeavours.

May I ask, are you being serious here luckylavender?

If you are, and to take your post at face value, then I am very sorry to hear that your parents are seriously ill, as your journey will no doubt be very stressful indeed, as are the circumstances and reasons for your travel, and it sounds very hard, but how could op possibly know that?

It would only be insensitive if op knew about your situation and then suggested that you watched the women’s football instead.

I don’t wish to sound unkind when you are going through such a difficult time, but do you in all seriousness expect every single poster who starts a thread on here to know the specifics of your individual situation and adjust their op accordingly?

Good luck with your journey. I know how difficult it is when your parents are very elderly and unwell.

luckylavender · 18/08/2023 14:37

@Furmitycorner798 - starting a thread asking everyone to do something is ridiculous in my opinion.

OK - that’s your opinion - but ‘ridiculous’ is completely different to ‘insensitive’.

You are entitled to your opinion but not everyone shares it. Op is trying to drum up support for women’s football for all the reasons she stated up
front, and is presumably, by posting here, trying to draw the attention of those who may not know about the match on Sunday.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all and I have no idea why people are getting so exercised about it!

OneSugar1 · 18/08/2023 14:57

I don’t normally give a shit about football but very excited about this and gave decided to have a viewing party for my daughter and her friends. They are in the living room next door planning it :)

LittleMissDarkness · 17/08/2023 21:02

Jesus are you for real? Thank god there are millions who disagree with you and value what these women have achieved.

I think she’s talking sense.

The women’s games are even more boring than the men’s and I’m not going to pretend otherwise or try to inflate the viewing figures just because they have vaginas like me.

All this fawning, calling them “heroes”, they’ve been through so much.. is ridiculous. It’s sport not heroics.

They have a long way to go and good luck to them but I don’t feel anything from your list.

I feel quite sad that this thread seems to have taken on such a negative tone when all the OP was trying to do was raise awareness and celebrate these women.

I get that what the OP was trying to do, unfortunately it's come across in a bit of a demanding way tbh. I hope those who watch it enjoy it.

She put it in AIBU, its quite reasonable people are going to disagree.

tinytemper66 · 18/08/2023 17:30

Not English but will be rooting for the Lionesses.
What time is kick off? 11?
Will definitely watch it. Go 🦁 esses!

JudgeJ · 18/08/2023 17:33

So we're supposed to watch as a faux political gesture? If you want Spain to win then I'll watch, I have a history, otherwise I'll do my usual, hide away for, hopefully, a couple of hours until I get the all clear message!

TenOhSeven · 18/08/2023 17:38

I'm not English and have no interest in football so no, I won't be watching.

Chattygirl123 · 18/08/2023 17:53

I'm not a big fan of football for many reasons, rugby is more my game. And I'm not English. However I support all the home nations my country first the others if my country isn't there. I've watched most of the England games and been shouting like mad for them. I hope they win on Sunday for the good of all women's sport and it'll be on in our house

UsingChangeofName · 18/08/2023 18:03

I shall be watching, as I have watched all through the tournament; as I watched (and attended) the Euros; as I have watched them live over previous years; as I have watched them on TV in previous World Cups. I am SO excited Lionesses are in the final, and delighted with the coverage, and the superb quality of Teams from so many countries.

However, I still think YABU to ask people to give up their time to watch something if they have no interest in it.
