It doesn't matter if you don't like football, or if you don't like sport this tournament and this game is about so much more than that.

  • it's about showing women's sport is worthy of investment.
  • it's about giving different role models to young and particularly teenage girls.
  • it's about showing rivalry in performance but not through violence.
  • it's about showing our daughters they matter as much as our sons.
  • it's about showing women they can be coaches and compete with men on an equal footing.
  • it's about highlighting the battles women from many countries have undergone to get to this tournament.
  • it's about showing homophobia has no place in team sports.

And it's about giving women a voice in their sport.

The Spanish team are there in spite of their coach and have some really disturbing stories about how players have been treated. Without any eyes on women's sport these sorts of issues are allowed to take root.

I don't think you have any understanding of how the TV industry works.

You watching the football match is not going to make any difference unless you're on a TV audience panel. You watching is not going to give more girls the opportunity to play.

Clearly neither do you because VOD figures are also counted.

And it matters because of sponsorship and grants. And people stepping forward to be coaches.

Are you asking people to watch live on their mobile device?

The proportion of viewing on a mobile device is tiny, it’s not going to make any difference if you and I watch it.

skippy67 · 17/08/2023 13:10

The England netball team got to the world cup final 3 weeks ago. Did you watch that OP? Or post encouraging MNetters to?

I did watch.

I didn't post about it - did you?

No on their smart TV.... Live iPlayer/ITVX

in terms of numbers watching it’s only the people on the viewing panel list that make a difference.

Yes sadly the viewing figures are extrapolated from a small group that are monitored. So us watching won't make any odds.

Probably will still watch anyway as it's an historic event and I've enjoyed the football so far that I've seen. That Spanish coach sounds well dodge though 🤮

skippy67 · 17/08/2023 13:18

Great match wasn't it? Australia were clinical from the start, and had a clear game plan. I feel Metcalfe didn't have her best match, and Pitman should have come on earlier. Fran Williams was immense when she came on. Helen Housby was excellent too.

The whole tournament was fantastic.

And no, I didn't post about it one here. why would I?

Perfectlyblended · 17/08/2023 13:18

Meh I’m done with how it all turns in to women Vs men. I will celebrate them winning just as I would the Men. But everything has to turn in to a drama. It’s football they are not saving the world.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 17/08/2023 13:19

I do hope they win and it’s amazing to see the profile being raised. However I’m not English and I’m not a football fan so while I might catch some of it I won’t be intentionally watching

Your arguments are excellent but I’m afraid that a) I’ll be out all day and b) I treat all football equally and ignore it. It bores me to distraction. Sorry.

^^This. 100%.
l’ve never watched a football match in my nearly 70 years long life. I have zero intention of doing so now at your or anyone else’s behest.

To show that women's sport is worthy of more support and investment.

Imagine if there was the infrastructure for girls netball that there is for boys football. Imagine if it was championed by men and women.

Maybe a lot more teenage girls wouldn't drop out of sport? Maybe there would be more free park netball pitches, maybe you'd see more girls hanging out playing netball with their mates. Maybe girls wouldn't get pushed out of MUGAs by teenage boys who think they own it.

That's maybe why you would.

If I fancy watching it I will, if not I won't. Sure as fuck won't be bearing this OP in mind though. Watching people kick a ball around isn't something I take orders on!

It was! I was so proud of the roses. I thought we would really miss Jo Harten but Eleanor Cardwell smashed it. The score line in the final flattered Australia as we panicked in Q4 when we realised we wouldn’t win but the whole thing was epic and it was a shame to see so little coverage of a game so many girls play.

I will also be watching the football on Sunday and roaring on the lionesses. Women's football doesn’t give me the same feels as mens football, which I’ve been obsessed with my whole life, but that doesn’t mean I’m not excited for the Womens team and keeping everything crossed they can bring it home

But this is number 7582 on my priority list.

Football will evolve how it evolves.

Fabricated interest is not going to change anything and you can't force people to care.

AllesAusLiebe · 17/08/2023 13:53

Mouldyfoodhelp · 17/08/2023 12:21

Won't be watching as no interest, its tiring being told you have to watch or do X, Y and Z just because its women centric when if it was decent it would gather momentum. Artificially inflating interest for many things won't improve quality if people think its decent enough as is.

This is exactly my view on the subject, articulated much better than I could've done!

I heard a ridiculous statement on TV yesterday where a pundit said, 'this is the first time England have been in a final since 1966'. Yes, factually, it is, but to conflate the men's game with the women's when it is still extremely new and still developing is artificial.

If you're interested, watch and support it, if not, no big deal. There seems to be a demand for instant parity - that will come with the development and establishment of the sport and will occur naturally, if the standard warrants it.

I also doubt that anyone would be excited about this World Cup if England had gone home after the group stages, but that just makes me sound like a bitter foreigner . . . 😂

girlfriend44 · 17/08/2023 14:00

yes, will do.

Laiste · 17/08/2023 14:29

No i won't. I just can't get into it. I keep seeing it on BBC Breakfast news and i think ''great, nice to see women being mentioned, good for girls to know they can play football''. But it doesn't make me want to watch it. Anymore than i'd want to watch women play cricket, or box, or play snooker, or chess or table tennis or tiddly winks!

I don't routinely watch ANY sport. Male or female.

Being honest with myself - I would watch the world cup football final if it was the England's men's team, but won't/wouldn't bother with the women's. I'm asking myself why right now .... and the answer is not clear. Erm ....

I think once in a blue moon (ie: every 4 years) i can sit through one 90 mins match of football and concentrate if these 3 criteria are met -
IF it's got some kind of meaning (ie: it's the last game in the biggest tournament ie: world cup final),
IF others would sit through it with me (fam would watch men's world cup final with me but not women's),
IF it's a fast paced game with a few sexy blokes in it. (shallow)

So i guess the women's football final would meet no.1, but not 2 or 3.

Were hosting a brunch watch party with the extended family
Can't wait.

GetOurraMeWay · 17/08/2023 15:26

No thanks. I don't like football. I'm neither English nor Spanish so no national pride at stake here either.

RaraRachael · 17/08/2023 15:43

If I hear the word Lionesses once more I'll scream. Just irrationally gets on my nerves

I sympathise with the shallow bit. The last time I paid to watch a football match it was because a group of us wanted to see George Best play. That dates it doesn't it.

Redglitter · 17/08/2023 15:57

Watching on Smart TVs/iplayer etc still only counts if you're on the viewing panel.
I am & all my viewing is counted, phone, tablet, TV, catch up - everything.

The only figures the industry uses are BARB ones. So unless you can persuade folk like me to watch the football - and you can't - the rest don't count officially
