To consider getting a Brazilian wax

Never had one before as it seemed like a lot of trouble and wasn’t something I particularly felt the need for, I usually just shave and trim. Previous bfs have seemed to be fine with that (and of course I believe it’s up to me what I want to do anyway).

For some reason, no idea why, I’ve been recently feeling it’s something I might like to do. Not currently in a relationship so it’s not because of that, I just fancy being hair-free. Am I insane? Will it be expensive and incredibly painful? What are people’s experiences?

Find somewhere that uses hot wax (NOT strips, I cannot stress this enough), Waxperts or Lycon are decent brands. The first one will be painful, but not terrible. Usually around £40 here (Gtr Manchester). I’ve been having it done for nearly 20 years, I barely feel a thing now and the air growth is slower and less of it.

M4J4 · 16/08/2023 21:32

Not sure why’ve you name changed or joined MN to start this thread, but on the dubious chance of genuine interest, yes, it’s painful. I use Nair once a month instead of waxing.

Penguin34 · 16/08/2023 21:37

I wax all day and not one of my intimate Waxing clients do it for a partner, they all do it for themselves.
Find somewhere that uses Lycon, you should be in, undressed, waxed, paid, rebooked and out the door within half an hour.

Just so you know what happens...
I leave the room and ask my clients to remove everything waist down (bar socks in winter), use the wipes provided and lay on the couch and cover themselves with a towel (the towel is only for modesty)
I come back in when you're ready and ask you to get in a frog position (knees out, feet together) I put wax in on both sides so while one side is drying I'll remove the other, I'll often put wax on multiple areas. When that's done I get you to bring your knees together and hug to your chest so I can wax your bum area (weirdly this bit doesn't hurt)
Make sure you go somewhere that uses gloves and doesn't double dip.
You must only have intimate waxing with hot wax but not all hot waxes are created equal - cheap shit ones are just that.
Don't hold your breath as tensing makes it hurt more and never get waxed if you need a wee, that hurts more too.
You'll be fine :)

Thanks, that’s helpful! I’m not sure I want to know what ‘double dip’ means in this context…?!

Any advice about how much I should let the hair grow first before going? From googling it sounds like it’s not advised to do it when it’s been shaved too recently.

10 days/ 2 weeks post shaving.
Then go every 4/5 weeks, dont wait for it to all grow back to rewax - usually after 4/5 wks about two thirds of the hair has grown back so it's going to be a third less painful and the hair is easier to come out the more regularly you have it done.
The first one will hurt but don't let it put you off, it's so much better after that, my clients chat all the way through.

Double dipping - dip spatular into wax, apply to Client, then put back into wax. So the same spat is used over and over again.
Good practice is to dip and Chuck or use both ends.

Thank you! Oh yeah definitely don’t want double dipping that sounds grim

Do you mean hollywood?

Hollywood is all off front to back, Brazilian is the same but with one strip left behind so that's not much between the two

GalGadont · 16/08/2023 21:58

Oh oops sounds like I do mean Hollywood

OP posts:
JimnJoyce · 16/08/2023 22:42

I started having Hollywoods about 4 months ago because I started getting terrible itching which was made much worse if I shaved or used Nair. So far I find it painful but it's quick and relatively inexpensive and I like the results after it's calmed down after a couple of days.

Whatawaytomakealivin · 16/08/2023 23:05

I've been having Hollywood waxes for the last 5 years. Best thing I ever did. My beauty therapist using hot lycon wax. She presses the bit she waxes after she removes the hair which helps with the pain. The first time hurt but its been okay ever since. Highly recommend. 😊

Whatawaytomakealivin · 16/08/2023 23:06

And I pay £30.

Toenailz · 17/08/2023 00:19

Brace yourself, OP.

You'll get a load of comments stating how having a hollywood is like being a 'child' down there. Because only dubious adults would look at an adult womans vagina and think about little girls, and they seem to crawl out from under their rocks whenever a woman likes to remove all her pubic hair.

I like hollywoods. Would never go back. Feel cleaner, smoother, the works. I mean waxing can be sore, depends on your pain threshold.

frazzledasarock · 17/08/2023 00:27

Get it done immediately after your period, it hurts less.

exfoliate a couple of days before your appt.

you can take a couple of paracetamol before going which will help with pain too.

read reviews of your local wax salon before booking, I’ve found an amazing woman who is so skilled it doesn’t hurt that much at all. And she’s booked months ahead.

the beautician might have a slightly different technique to pp. but normally they’ll all put you at ease and talk through what they’ll be doing.

I get waxed regularly.

Imsomeoneelse · 17/08/2023 02:30

@Penguin34 Do you have clients who are over 60? I really want to get this done but feel very self conscious that the skin in that area is really loose now.

TrishM80 · 17/08/2023 03:00

Porn has a lot to answer for.

bryceQ · 17/08/2023 03:09

There's evidence of waxing in the classical world, through middle ages and bryony, listened to an interesting history podcast on this recently on history hit.

Brazilian you're left with some hair and Hollywood is all off. Everything @Penguin34 said is my experience.

Pippa12 · 17/08/2023 03:20

Porn 😂I’ve never watched porn and get all mine off! Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

Ive had a full wax for 10 years. I’d never go back, confirmed during covid when I couldn’t get it done. £30 every 5 weeks. It hurts, not unbearable and it’s 100% worth it!!!

Orangesandlemons82 · 17/08/2023 03:22

I started getting Hollywood's at the start of this year. I do it because I prefer it. We are on holiday at the moment and have realised that I am less worried about wearing a swimming costume with it done. I changed to a different salon last time (waxing is the only thing they do) and it was a much less painful experience and was over and done in 15 mins.

I would give it a try and see what you think. If you aren't keen it will grow back quick enough!

TrishM80 · 17/08/2023 03:34

Why do men, by and large, not remove their pubic hair? Seems to be nearly always women who do it.

louderthan · 17/08/2023 03:55

Almost all the men I've slept with over the last three years have had very little hair. They trim, shave or use veet.
Incidentally I read somewhere that incidences of pubic lice have drastically reduced since people started removing their pubic hair.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/08/2023 04:31

Echo the hot wax/non-strip wax advice (my friend is a wax..er, waxologist... intimate waxer.. in the North West... eyes thread suspiciously )...

It doesn't damage the skin like strip wax, it hurts FAR less, it is far MORE effective at getting rid of hair in one pass (albeit, you may need to go a few times to get all your hair on the same growth schedule so its all coming through at the same time, same length etc)...

My top tip.. get your armpits done too, amazing, no stubbly regrowth, regrowth is pretty slow, no itching, I have never had an ingrown hair and when it regrows its pretty fine and soft which on many hair types means it won't show up before being long enough to wax again.

I don't do it now, I don't live near a waxer I trust for various disability based reasons, but when I did, I did it for me, no one else. I found it cleaner and more comfortable.

I generally also prefer no pubes on a bloke (though not to the point I'd call it a deal breaker!) and I have known many who at least trim, if not remove a fair bit of hair. So yeah, its not at all uncommon.

StarlightLady · 17/08/2023 06:40

I’ve had regular Hollywoods for many years.

i found the voting at the top of the thread difficult as it’s not about being unreasonable or not, it’s 100% about what you want to do.

Rather than repeat previous comments above, l would add the following:

  • The first time and, perhaps the second time are the worst, take 2 paracetamol beforehand, as you and your body get used to it, it’s like a walk in the park.
  • It is less sweaty in summer.
  • Don’t have a wax immediately before your period.
  • Don’t have sex the same day, at least the first couple of times.
  • Ignore any “pre-pubescent look comments”. The same would apply to men shaving their faces.
  • It is nothing new, hair removal was a service offered in the bathhouses of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.

As for the comments about men not removing body hair, their’s is normally thicker and more of a challenge, regardless l’ve slept with a fair number of men (bring on the name calling!) who have removed pubic hair and in particular their underarm hair.

Finally, im my 40s, but in answer to @Imsomeoneelse , l have a friend in her mid 60s who still goes for her regular “all off”.

I’m nearly 60 and have recently restarted having a hollywood wax. The woman who does mine is really matter of fact and I don’t feel embarrassed at all. She chats all the way through. Interestingly, she does quite a lot of male waxing, says it’s becoming increasingly popular.
