I'm inclined to think we've been scammed. Am I being unreasonable?

I cannot believe the vitriol I am hearing, that people honestly think nhs clinical staff, especially those working in urgent or acute services, do not deserve a cup of tea and a mars bar. On a 12 or even 18 hour shift in A&E, when often there is barely time for a glass of water let alone a sit down and a cuppa, when they are doing everything they can with limited staffing, space, time, to save the lives of people you love, do you really begrudge your charity donation going towards food and drink?

As someone previously said, these staff members have paid for parking or transport to work, they pay inflated prices in the canteen or a vending machine (if they are lucking enough to have 5 minutes to do so) for anything food and drink they haven’t brought from home. They provide their own tea bags, milk, etc for the staff rooms. The kettle and microwave is often broken, the chairs are ripped, the cleaner has left so no ones emptied the bin for a week, something is broken but estates were called 3 weeks ago and still haven’t been.

They are working over their rota’d hours and so probably not being paid, perhaps because the next staff member is sick, late, quit, caught up with an emergency in the car park.

They owe thousands in student loans they took out to do this training.

They are not having a fucking cream tea like they are on holiday in Devon. They deserve a mars bar, or even a massage if they are damn lucky enough to find time to have one.

I know this was not the original point of the post but I could not walk away without sharing my absolute disgust at some of the comments I have read here about nhs staff getting any of the very small and very rare benefits that have been referenced.

I agree. People were okay to give them that measly sham of a clap on a Thursday, which I always refused to take part in, but how dare they receive anything actually meaningful to enhance their working lives. You couldn’t make it up.

Me too! I donated like many others before the ''First Million'' and it went absolutely nuts .
I'd rather have given to a more worthy cause - she is s greedy profiteering grabby opportunist ~ Shameless woman in my opinion.

If I’m reading this correctly, you donated right in the beginning rather than to the foundation, so your money is safe and went to the nhs.

mumofteenss · 16/08/2023 05:59

In our trust we got two modular building staff rooms, with seating, tvs, and vending machines. then some "pods" around the hospital which were brightly coloured tables and one seat either side. During covid when there were restriction on how many staff could be in the actual staff rooms they were handy. Now the modular buildings are used occasionally as they arent close to wards and breaks are so short by the time you get to one its time to go back off break, and i dont know what happened to the pods but they are long gone.

MrsImFedUpOfTheWeather · 16/08/2023 00:00

So our money, in your trust ,went on tampons, massages, art/animal therapy and treats?

Wow.

You have to take some responsibility for knowing what the charity you support actually does.

Erdinger · 16/08/2023 06:03

I’m not actually sure why the OP is up in arms that some of the money may have gone to minor refreshments / comfort for the hardworking NHS staff who were overwhelmed. I’d love to know how she helped out during the pandemic

IncompleteSenten · 16/08/2023 06:05

Con artist imo. I think she squeezed every penny she could out of it.

SoSad44 · 16/08/2023 06:08

The money raised on Justgiving went to NHS charities together. Thr justgiving page is still up. If you donated there, you can see their impact report here OP https://nhscharitiestogether.co.uk/our-impact/covid-appeal-report/

for everyone who donated to the Captain Tom Moore charity, you probably funded a pool house and the family. Sorry

Horrendous profiteer. Building a spa and trying to get round planning permission by pretending it’s for the company. Taking the old boy on a long haul holiday during a pandemic where he caught COVID off Russ Abbott and ended up in GRAVE.

That's what got me.. taking him on a long haul holiday where he ended up dying from covid. I couldn't live with myself

panko · 16/08/2023 06:09

Sounds good to me.

It's the rest of it that's iffy. I'm sure it will come out in the wash soon

No, you’re right. The money’s gone to the right place. The issue is the mendacity of Hannah IG. I imagine her dad would be ashamed of her, he was a proper old school gentleman.

Oh, you knew him then?

Yeah I thought the whole idea was it was meant to be instead of clapping - to actually help them out. Especially when they were at risk of dying!

It looks like some of the money went on screens so people could say good bye too.

Going back to the original campaign- when I was giving money I thought I was donating towards equipment to save people's lives -not mars bars and tea rooms for staff. Not that they don't deserve them - absolutely do, but we were told we were in an absolute crisis. Cadbury and coffee isn't a crisis.

We live and learn.

The staff are part of "the equipment"

Namechanger1002 · 15/08/2023 22:55

I don't think he was a nice old man. I don't think he came across very well in his interviews. So shoot me.

I thought the same. Just because someone is old. Doesn't mean they are nice by default.

User15387500 · 16/08/2023 06:23

I didn't donate, I didn't like her from the start

daffodilandtulip · 16/08/2023 06:29

I never understood why anyone donated money for someone walking around their garden tbh.

No one would have donated money for someone walking around their council flat. It showed privilege from the start.

Baconking · 16/08/2023 06:30

MrsImFedUpOfTheWeather · 16/08/2023 00:17

I wouldn't blame anyone for taking anything offered - fair play. But tea rooms and massages? Any data on the impact yet? More lives saved with rested staff? Waste of money.

I just think that when we were raising money for the 'NHS', it was for the institution- not the individuals. Maybe I'm wrong.

Did you research the charity you were donating to or just jump on the bandwagon to sponsor an old man walking up & down his garden.

NHS charities together are quite clear on how the spend donations

From her website 🤣 what a load of BS

BE UNWAVERING IN YOUR PURSUIT OF PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND HAPPINESS, BE BOLD, AUTHENTIC AND REMARKABLE

How far up your own arse do you need to be to have a website with that ?!?

camelfinger · 16/08/2023 06:45

There are lots of threads on here moaning about how rubbish the NHS is. I think that many people aren’t happy with the idea of a tax rise to be able to give the NHS the funds it needs to succeed. They would prefer to just have a huge whip round to buy spanking new equipment, as that makes them feel better about themselves. And the ‘angels and heroes’ working for the NHS can be pacified with a clap and an Easter egg.

I would prefer that the NHS, including drinks and decent facilities for staff, were funded by taxation. Then we wouldn’t need all this frippery.

Yellowlegobrick · 16/08/2023 06:46

Total grifter.

Probably thinks the fact that any money at all making it to good causes makes it "ok" for her to take a huge salary that's not commensurate with any actual work on her part.

MaggieFS · 16/08/2023 06:46

Jeepers OP. I was with you at the start, as per my previous post, but you've lost me now. You're attitude to NHS staff caused by your own ignorance of what the money was going to stinks. It's not that hard to understand how the most important component of the NHS is staff and at a time if such crisis ANYTHING which which made the awfulness of the time fractionally more bearable would have been money well spent.

Food and wellbeing for staff? That's questionable for a start. That isn't what people thought they were donating to. I'd like to see how that money was spent.

Never again will I give to a 'charity'. Charities are for fools.

I know this comment is early on in the thread but food and wellbeing for staff is questionable?! Do you not know how horrific working on a COVID ward was during the early days? Providing food was the very least we could do.

And if you don't think wellbeing of staff matters - well no wonder people are leaving healthcare in droves.

All the medical equipment, beds, ventilators, safety equipment are all useless without the staff.
