I'm inclined to think we've been scammed. Am I being unreasonable?

I mean tbf, it was pretty obvious the money was either going straight to the family or paid to them with some wellbeing stuff ie cakes for nhs staff. Charities like this don't really fund important stuff like new machines. It's not in their remit to do so. If you want to fund the nhs I'm sure there are reputable ways to do it and a charity founded by a publicity stunt family is not likely to be it.

Vickythevan63 · 15/08/2023 22:50

Well I never bought into it in the first place, didn’t donate a penny, felt there were better ways to donate my money.

The whole thing just didn’t sit right with me from day one. I am not surprised at how it has turned out.

Blossomtoes · 15/08/2023 22:50

They do. An entire cancer wing at our hospital was built from donated money. And just about every MRI in the country was given by charity at one stage.

Villain. I’m afraid I never liked the whole thing. All the birthday cards “in the local school hall” - I recognised that well as I grew up locally, it was a hall in the nearby £30k/yr private school. Celebrating an old man with huge amounts of privilege so we didn’t notice his peers dying in god awful nursing homes. The whole thing was wrapped up in class sycophancy from the beginning and she did nothing but take advantage.

Very well explained @Approaching. I often just having a feeling about this kind of thing but can’t articulate why.

You have put it perfectly. When the footage came on tv I’d inwardly groan & think “well yes it’s very nice that he can do that (walk up and down his driveway) at his age but what is it all about, really?”

But you feel so churlish voicing that kind of thought. I suppose time always tells, and those of us who were suspicious feel quietly confident about their gut feelings.

His daughter struck me as terribly smug, awfully pleased with herself. A bit of a Hyacinth Bouquet type but with more confidence.

She's definitely a villain. I don't think she exploited him though. People automatically assume elderly people are vulnerable and stupid. He knew exactly what he was doing and would have known it wasn't on to travel when everyone else was in lockdown. He was trying to earn money for his family.

Exactly this. People seem to think that all
peope over the age of 70 are angels. There are exactly the same proportion of criminals, rapists, tax dodgers, thieves in that age group as there are in any younger age group.

Boomboom22 · 15/08/2023 22:51

For the foundation I mean. But tbh the nhs charities stuff will go on spurious staff wb iniatives as it can't be used say to pay staff unless its like mcmillan and even then I think it is mostly non paid affiliates.
I'd prefer taxes to be spent wiselynaybe even raised than an expectation that charities help fund the nuts and bolts of the nhs and other things like social care.

Boomboom22 · 15/08/2023 22:53

Well yes but usually that's one individual donation or from a uni etc. Not an amalgamation of small foundations.

SoosanCarter · 15/08/2023 22:54

I think it was last year, at Wimbledon she was in the Royal Box. Also there was a scientist who was very significant in developing the COVID vaccine. The commentator announced them to the crowd. Hannah stood up, made an exaggerated bow and waved. The scientist just looked embarrassed when she was announced. Says it all, really.

snurtifier · 15/08/2023 22:54

Her problem is she wasn't ambitious enough. If only she'd made millions selling faulty PPE to the government at inflated prices, she could have made it to the House of Lords.

Blossomtoes · 15/08/2023 22:54

The cancer wing was paid for by public subscription @Boomboom22. Do you always have such difficulty conceding that you might just be wrong?

I thought Russ Abbott died years ago 🤷‍♀️

So did I! Just looked him up - 75 years old apparently.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 15/08/2023 22:46

@WinterBerry7 thanks for answering my question. So people shouldn't feel bad if they donated initially, I don't think, even if in hindsight the actions of the daughter are questionable, that initial money did make its way into the NHS charitable arm.

Anyone who donated originally, that money absolutely went to the NHS.

Where people should be questioning their donations is if they donated to the Captain Tom Foundaton which was set up off the back of the initial fundraising, a totally separate operation. Which has already been investigated/is under investigation. This is the charity she demanded a high salary for (and was refused by the regulators) as her salary demands didn’t match the income/expenditure of the charity. As someone mentioned unthread - someone running a charity taking in excess of £30 million would rightly be on a high salary, probably higher than 80k.

Floralnomad · 15/08/2023 22:55

I think they are all decidedly dodgy ,however I didn’t donate so can’t get that worked up about it . I hate these types of fundraisers , it just feels to me that it’s people trying to get themselves their 15 minutes of fame .

True, as he was over 100 and in the war it was not socially acceptable to voice anything other than admiration.

Do you remember the kid who camped in his garden for a year or something? Similar in some ways. Don't think he was grifting though, bit off though going on TV etc.

Namechanger1002 · 15/08/2023 22:55

I don't think he was a nice old man. I don't think he came across very well in his interviews. So shoot me.

DivingForLove · 15/08/2023 22:56

@MrsImFedUpOfTheWeather you’re going to use this case as an excuse to never give to charity again??? Bloody hell. That’s an excuse if ever I heard one 🙄.

There are loads of brilliant charities that do incredible work! Just choose more wisely next time.

Boomboom22 · 15/08/2023 22:57

Surely his daughters must be quite old themselves so pr9bably not best placed to manage 30 mill depending on previous career experience.

Abra1t · 15/08/2023 22:58

The Captain Tom Foundation is a completely separate organisation that was established after Captain Tom raised funds for our Covid-19 Urgent Appeal, and the Charity Commission has made clear that the £38 million he raised for NHS Charities Together is not under investigation.
In total our Covid-19 Urgent Appeal raised over £160 million thanks to generous donations from thousands of supporters like you. This money has been distributed across the network of NHS charities to reach every NHS Trust and Health Board in the UK – funding thousands of projects providing vital mental health support for NHS staff, training for emergency volunteers, equipment and support for patients, and community partnership programmes to prevent ill health and reduce pressure on NHS services.

We remain incredibly grateful to Captain Tom for his personal efforts to support the NHS, and how he inspired countless others to do the same.

Our new report1 is for the first time highlighting the impact of the British public’s record-breaking fundraising during the pandemic – which ultimately generated £160 million to support NHS staff, patients and communities in the wake of Covid-19. A re...

They weren’t managing £30 million. They never had access to it.

Hannah I-M was managing a completely separate charity, which she did badly and is now being found out.

Reverseparkingonly · 15/08/2023 23:05

@snurtifier absolutely. Then she would hyhad nothing to Moan about.

Whats happening about that thieving witch Boris’ Scottish mate?

Reverseparkingonly · 15/08/2023 23:05

Have had, that should said.

shadypines · 15/08/2023 23:05

For me it's just a bit off calling on your average Joe to donate to charity when you yourself live in a big fuck off house. So I'm not surprised by any of this.
I didn't like the way she always sat with him during interviews as if he was a child.
I didn't like the way it was ok for Michael Ball to meet Capt. T when people couldn't attend their own families funerals.
It all got too big and showy, if you want to do something for a good cause, just do it, quietly without a big media circus.

Very contrasting reactions, indeed.

The scientist was Sarah Gilbert, Professorship of Vaccinology at the University of Oxford, who was one of the scientists behind the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID vaccine
