Dark chocolate Malteasers WTF?

SuperGinger · 15/08/2023 11:03

I thought I'd have a little treat and bought some Malteasers but didn't notice they are dark and horrible with 30 % less sugar, the whole point of Malteasers is the sweet melt in the mouth malty pop not this bitter, sawdust creation. I know they aren't healthy but why do the "it's better for you brigade" ruin a good thing

They are indeed an absolute monstrosity. Why are people so set on spoiling such delicious things 🤬

ilovesooty · 15/08/2023 11:05

It's not as if they've replaced standard Maltesers.

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 11:05

I bought a bag to take to the cinema they were a bag of disappointment!

Ifailed · 15/08/2023 11:06

So you bought the wrong thing and it's now "it's better for you brigade"'s fault? Why not just pay attention when shopping?

Pfpppl · 15/08/2023 11:07

I generally prefer dark chocolate to milk, but even I think dark maltesers are wrong! I slightly came round to them by the end of the bag, but not sure I'd buy them again.

SuperGinger · 15/08/2023 11:07

Well it isn't awfully clear that they are different fron the packaging and I like dark chocolate on it's own but these were such a disappointment. Utterly repulsive.

I didn't realise, I just bought them because they were the biggest bag of Maltesers. They lasted 3 weeks - and I have 4 teenagers, on school holidays, with friends over - no one would touch them after trying one.

SuperGinger · 15/08/2023 11:09

@LyingontheGrassonSundaymorningofLastWeek I can believe that

Georgina125 · 15/08/2023 11:10

I tried them but they just weren't right. Milk chocolate is the only true way for malteasers!

Janieforever · 15/08/2023 11:10

I’m genuinely not sure how they could make it any clearer, it’s not exactly small print , it even has a big green circle at the bottom saying 30mpercent less sugar, and you can easily buy the normal variety. It’s absolutely fine for them to have a healthier option

Snap, they sat in our cupboard for weeks as no one liked them. I actually felt sick after trying some. And I love my food!

SuperGinger · 15/08/2023 11:12

Well I just saw the red packaging, it was on the bottom shelf of the supermarket - so no need to be sniffy and superior

hygieneversustheplanet · 15/08/2023 11:13

I can see how you could make that mistake, esp if in a hurry.

They've been selling them since 1937 and have now decided to move the goalposts!!!!

But the normal variety is easily available. Irs just a healthier option.not a replacement, 😂

hygieneversustheplanet · 15/08/2023 11:14

This is interesting:

First sold in the UK in 1937, they were originally aimed at women.
They were originally described as "energy balls" and aimed at slimming women

Maltesers - Wikipedia

I've never liked them myself. I hate malted flavours.

I get that, but what I mean is that there has always been only one type since 1937 and OP could be forgiven for not realising this new type has been invented and thus confusing the bags.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/08/2023 11:16

They weren't right.

Malteser chocolate is a particular taste unlike other chocolate. Its what makes them nice!

Helendegenerate · 15/08/2023 11:19

I am a Malteser fan and treat myself from time to time but have not read a single comment in favour of the new dark variety. I won't bother trying them.

This might be something which disappears from the shelves before long.

(I sometimes put 2 or 3 in my mouth at once and just let them melt 😁😏😘)

chillibear · 15/08/2023 11:33

I picked these up by mistake the other day but thankfully realised at the till. I normally wouldn't have asked to swap them but so glad I did reading this 😁

floribunda18 · 15/08/2023 11:36

I sort of admire, and perhaps, fear, the "one square of dark chocolate as a treat" people but yes I'm with you, OP. Maltesers just melt in the mouth and are perfect as they are and should not be interfered with.

NicotineQueen223 · 15/08/2023 11:44

Completely agree OP, I bought them by accident and was horrified. Absolutely horrified. It actually ruined my evening 🤣

How is it being sniffy and superior to point out that the bag clearly stated what kind they were?

foulksmills · 15/08/2023 11:52

There's something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it.

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 11:53

Tbf it is an easy mistake .if you were not paying much attention.
