Hate my new bath.. I could cry..

We have never had any money to do anything to our houses in the 10+ years we've lived together.
We had a shell suite style bathroom that was in when we moved, not exactly modern but worked ok.

We have saved and had a new bathroom fitted this one

www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/turin-l-shaped-1700-complete-bathroom-package?sku=TRCBS-RH

It looks lovely. But I'm a huge bath person.. it's my comfort.. and the bath is the most uncomfortable thing I've ever laid in.
It's so narrow there is no where to put my arms.. and where I would rest my head just hurts my neck. I come out feeling more stressed than when I went in. I could cry.
What can I do?
Please say someone else has been here 😢

I've never bought my own, but I've helped friends a few times. My job is to hold their coat and shoes, and encourage them to sit on the toilet seat; reach into the back of cupboards/ drawers; and get in and out of the bath, check tap positions, lie down, relax, and reach for book/phone/glass of wine. Also to mix and match pieces to get exactly what is right for them, instead of going for a pre-set bundle.

It seems to be easier if a third person holds your checklist, reminds you what to try out next, and charms/distracts the salesperson. Creates a buffer so you can test and ponder to your heart's content.

Baths tend to need curves at the ends for comfort, but also an outward flare from bottom to top. Straight sides are tricky, even when they are in fashion aesthetically. Lots of people love the look though, so you should be able to sell it easily enough. First to find the new one though!

You will be able to get a big bathtub for less than £200 if you shop around and you and your dh will be able to swap it yourself. It is very easy

@@eggsinonetamborine

I'm sorry, it's SO disappointing. It's not as easy as @curaçao is saying though, because it's a P bath, you're going to have to think about the tiling (or whatever is on the wall) and the flooring as well as if you have room for a wider bath at the narrow bit (distance to loo/door/vanity)

id keep trying it until the end of the month & see if you get used to it. Then speak to your bathroom fitter before you do anything!! They can advise you on fit & if maybe they know anyone who would buy it or had one you can buy.

best of luck!!

MonumentalLentil · 15/08/2023 08:51

Unfortunately fashion and comfort rarely go together. I would change it as it won't get any better, sorry. You might get used to it but then again you probably won't.
I would also put a rounded toilet in for the same reason.
When I look at potential new houses I factor in the cost of replacing an uncomfortable bath & square toilet with something that is comfortable or in many cases, more in keeping with the style of the house.

I feel your pain! I also have massive bath regret. We were recommended a new ‘modern’ low bath which I thought was great as it preserved heat and saved water. However the depth of the water doesn’t even cover my belly! Because of this I am forced to make the water scalding hot do I don’t freeze to death.

sad times. I’ve considered getting it refitted but we literally remortgaged our house for the bathroom renovation.

@Raspberrysins price up getting it replaced & obviously considering walls & flooring, but you should be able to find a 'normal' bath to swap out at not too much expense as the footprint will be much the same.

Ohpleeeease · 15/08/2023 08:56

Change the bath. It won’t be too expensive, all the pipe work is there, you could keep the taps. Seriously, change it. In the meantime think of all the money you’re saving on hot water.

Oh no gutted for you OP, I rented a house for 3 years with a P shaped bath and it was impossible to bathe in in comfortably too narrow at the narrow end and too wide at the wide end! Just used it as a shower, definitely taught me to avoid them like the plague, I also learned to put taps in the middle not at one end or another (but I had romantic ideals of shared baths with my husband, before kids, that never really materialised as he hates baths lol) I bought my bath 10 years ago but also think it was a Kaldewei double ended 750 wide x 1700, I'm a size 12 but it was also comfy when I was pushing a size 18 pregnant. I'll look it up x

Carron Quantum 1700x700mm Double Ended was what I got and can recommend (sorry not 750 wide like I originally said) although think prices have shot up in the last 10 years. Hope you get sorted OP. Xx

Tinysoxx · 15/08/2023 00:34

Recommendation: the KALDEWEI saniform bath

I think I had one of those, they're great.

No, you can't move the taps without leaving holes.

CinderRosie · 15/08/2023 09:12

I too am a bath lover and moved from a rented house last year (with a standard bath) to our own house with an old bathroom, and a slightly smaller than standard bath - its narrow as well as slightly shorter and I hate it, cannot get comfy and I feel claustrophobic. I was considering a P shaped bath when we eventually have money to replace but think I'll swerve those... We will need a slightly shorter bath due to room size but need it slightly wider to compensate.

FetchezLaVache · 15/08/2023 09:13

I had one in my last house (rented) so I feel your pain! I did get used to it, though. I find it's a lot better if you use your hands to hold a book and a glass of wine! ;) One thing that I couldn't get used to, however, is the way the slope facilitates the egress of water all over the bathroom floor...

amusedbush · 15/08/2023 09:13

I have that same bathroom suite but the 1600 version, so an even smaller bath, if you can believe it 😂when we moved in, I would have ripped the old (tangerine coloured!) bath out and installed a long shower cubical instead but DH has an active job and loves an epsom salt bath, so we compromised with the L-shaped bath.

It's so, so uncomfortable. Really angular, really narrow, and I (5' 5") can't lie comfortably so I have no idea how 6' 3" DH can possibly enjoy it.

The toilet is also a nightmare. The seat fittings have come loose, I can't find replacement fittings and square toilet seats are so much more expensive than round 😭

Tinysoxx · 15/08/2023 09:13

oh I can also save everyone time with the ultimate comfy loo:
Roca Senso

It is slightly lower than the standard 40cm - or even 41cm - off the ground (probably just a nice round number that suits taller male designers) so that you can put your feet flat on the floor more easily. Healthier for you. Our toilets are too high off the ground in general in this country but then easy to get off. The Senso has a big wide soft close toilet seat to not scare children failing down and very comfy.

StressedToDeathhhh · 15/08/2023 09:16

We have very similar and I was pregnant when I first got it and was SO uncomfortable. My old one was ugly but much wider, I'm not great at measuring stuff and didn't realise until it was in.

BUT its absolutely fine now, obviously helped once I had DD and lost the baby weight. But I just generally got used to it anyway. Had to really because I cant afford to change it!

lanthanum · 15/08/2023 09:18

Having been in uncomfortable baths on holidays, we decided there were two alternatives: insist on sitting in them in the showroom (although it's not the same without water), or take detailed measurements of our existing bath and get one with as near as possible the same profile. It's not just length/width - it's how steep the end is, and things like that. We took the latter approach, and it worked.

theemmadilemma · 15/08/2023 09:21

Having followed mother around getting in and out of baths to check them, next time I'm lucky enough to choose one, I'll not order without trying it out.

All baths are not made equal by any standard.

Sadly if the pillow didn't work, I think you're stuffed. You can't make it wider and I can assure having had a fairly similar one previously that the other end is not more comfortable sadly, more room, but can't lie properly.

Misty84 · 15/08/2023 09:23

I mean it doesn’t look comfortable even from the photo 😬

Crayfishforyou · 15/08/2023 09:25

We got caught like this with one bathroom. When we planned the other one we went to the shop and I lay in every bath they had before ordering.
Nobody uses the bath in the bathroom, everyone uses our en suite one

spotddog · 15/08/2023 09:27

Op, if you are considering replacing the bath ensure you have some spare tiles. Tiles will most likely break and new bath will most likely be a different size.

We are renting. Bathroom is hotel style. All looks nice except very deep bath is set in marble. There is nothing to hold onto when trying to get out.

bridgetreilly · 15/08/2023 00:34

Oh no! An uncomfortable bath is truly a disaster.

I’ve always wondered why they call themselves Victorian Plumbing, tbh. I want 21st century plumbing, not Victorian!

Lol true - luckily it’s Victoria not Victorian !!

KimberleyClark · 15/08/2023 09:30

We have one of those P shaped shower baths but it’s more curvy and does have a good slope at the back.

Barney60 · 15/08/2023 09:35

Baths are 2 layers, one outside one inside with insulation in between to help keep the water warm. Lots of baths are body contoured inside, so you have a kind of neck back shape inside.
Some do not have inner shape, so look lovely but are just not comfortable.
Before buying any bath you need to lie in it.
Like you op im a bath person its my sanctuary, my go when when i need to warm up after a cold winters journey home, my thinking place, my upset place ect.
Sadly i dont have any advice, but im sure after time you will get used to your new bath.

willWillSmithsmith · 15/08/2023 09:35

I was going to replace my bath with the type you’ve shown. It didn’t occur to me that it would be less comfy. I really feel for you as I like a nice relaxing soak. It’s made me much more aware now that I had better check measurements etc to make sure it matches the bath I already have. I was changing it because I wanted the shower section.

willWillSmithsmith · 15/08/2023 09:38

2023forme · 15/08/2023 09:30

Lol true - luckily it’s Victoria not Victorian !!

I think there’s one called Victorian Plumbing as well as I kept muddling the two websites up when looking for a new loo and basin set.

EeesandWhizz · 15/08/2023 09:40

DiscoBeat · 15/08/2023 02:28

I get you as I struggle with our bath too for a different reason. It's vast (fine for my 6'4 husband but I just slide down and can't relax as I can't reach the end. No chance of changing it as it's Victorian and heavy and we spent over £1k renovating it but I'd love to find a way to make it more comfortable.

Could you put a plastic step on it's side at the end to 'shorten' the bath?
