Hate my new bath.. I could cry..

We have never had any money to do anything to our houses in the 10+ years we've lived together.
We had a shell suite style bathroom that was in when we moved, not exactly modern but worked ok.

We have saved and had a new bathroom fitted this one

www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/turin-l-shaped-1700-complete-bathroom-package?sku=TRCBS-RH

It looks lovely. But I'm a huge bath person.. it's my comfort.. and the bath is the most uncomfortable thing I've ever laid in.
It's so narrow there is no where to put my arms.. and where I would rest my head just hurts my neck. I come out feeling more stressed than when I went in. I could cry.
What can I do?
Please say someone else has been here 😢

@Alarmclockstop i'm 5'8ish and roughly a size 14-16 for reference.. it's when I put my arms down either side of my body in this bath there is just no where to put them? If I have them down by my side I'm wedged in.. and just no where for my feet to comfortably rest either. Its things that you don't even think of when you get in a bath usually!
Our old bath was probably from 2002 when the house was built and it wasn't attractive but I miss it so much now.. feel like going and retrieving it from the skip on my driveway!

Recommendation: the KALDEWEI saniform bath

bridgetreilly · 15/08/2023 00:34

Oh no! An uncomfortable bath is truly a disaster.

I’ve always wondered why they call themselves Victorian Plumbing, tbh. I want 21st century plumbing, not Victorian!

MonsterCalling · 15/08/2023 00:40

Oh dear. It does look very angular from the picture.

Is it quite deep? Could you get one of those bath dams and sit upright in it at one end like a Japanese soaking tub?

Otherwise I’m really sorry but you will have to replace it.

PriOn1 · 15/08/2023 00:43

Sounds rubbish, OP. Rotten when you saved up for it.

But thank you for the information. I’m going to be househunting in a couple of months and had been looking online and was wondering about the trend for weird shaped baths like that one. Presumably it’s a trend that won’t last, but I’ve been hoping very much to get a house with a bath. I will definitely be the weirdo that takes off my shoes and tries it out now!

GoldGorillaGums · 15/08/2023 00:48

Moving the taps could make the world of difference, we have a very straight bathtub & moved the taps to the centre. We used white tap hole stoppers/blanking plugs to fill where the taps had originally been which look okay. Maybe not the most permanent solution but it’ll do for now & my baths are pretty comfy again.

SternJosie · 15/08/2023 01:00

I know exactly what you mean about your arms. That style of bath is often extremely narrow at the small end, you need to hunch your shoulders inwards a bit so your arms are then floating with nowhere to put them. We had one a few years ago, we kept it for 5 years before breaking and ripping it out.

Sorry op, no help but my sympathies. The only thing I could suggest would be trying to remove and sell it then replace with a normal bath, or try and save up for it. I don't think any amount of bath pillows or tap moving will help unfortunately, the bath itself is just too narrow to be comfy.

eggsinonetamborine · 15/08/2023 01:00

@Storynanny1 have you still got it or did you have it taken out? X

this is why i think people should go to a showroom and take off shoes and coats and ask to lie in some tubs

We did that. The salesman clearly thought we were insane, but it’s the only way to tell.

I did that too-I was spending £1200 on a bath, no way I wasn’t trying it out first

redalex261 · 15/08/2023 01:05

Oh dear! I feel your pain! I have just had a bath fitted after years of a shower cubicle only. I love mine, and did consider the very model you selected as I really liked the look of this with shower over bath. Fortunately my sister advised me against it. She bought your style and told me she almost never bathed in it as feels like lying in a coffin! She is desperate to rip it out but can't persuade husband. I do think moving the tap to the centre is pointless as there is no slope at all at the wide end - it's practically a right angle so would not be comfortable to recline against.

WheresTheRemoteControl · 15/08/2023 01:08

Mines uncomfortable narrow and head can't get comfy. A rolled up hand towel works well to support neck Better than a bath pillow

Globules · 15/08/2023 01:11

I empathize. I bought my house last year. One of the things that sold it to me was the lovely stylish modern bathroom, including bath. I'd been missing my bath, as I'd rented for a year, and the rental only had a shower.

I sunk into my first bath and cried after 5 minutes. The taps are in the middle, and it's shaped so you can sit at either end. It's basically an upside down trapezium, so the part at the bottom where you lie is tiny. In addition, the pop up plug hole is exactly where your bum goes, so you're constantly having to pop the plug back in every time you make the slightest movement.

I can't afford to replace it, as only changing the bath isn't an option for the whole room's look. So I rarely bathe now. It's depressing.

The bath you've bought OP, I feel your pain. I had several baths in DPs bath during my renting. His bath was that shape. It was as narrow as anything, but I put up with it as it wasn't mine.

eggsinonetamborine · 15/08/2023 01:20

@redalex261 lying in a coffin is the prefect description!! Especially as the only place you can rest your arms is across yourself as there's no room otherwise! 😂🤦🏼‍♀️
What bath did you go for in the end?

I'm so glad you posted this. I'm house hunting at the moment and I've seen several houses with baths like yours, I will definitely be swerving those!

I've always thought it was a play on Angela Rippon's character from the 80s books - Victoria Plum?

OneSugar1 · 15/08/2023 01:51

I don’t think moving the taps would help if the wider end is too vertical. Might be a more expensive plumbing job too with extra pipe work.

I’d look into buying a replacement bath (tested for coffin similarities and pop up plug/bum hole comparability!) and seeing if I could sell the other bath on to recoup some costs.

corblimeylove · 15/08/2023 02:00

I made this mistake it felt like a coffin, however I did get somewhat used to it after a while. Would never buy another P shaped bath unless the narrow part was normal bath width.

That does seem incredibly narrow- If you are like lying in a coffin!
Also...you are hardly huge- {I'm your height}

Plumber re-positioned my new loo at right angles to the wall ...it means that if someone uses too much paper after doing a monster log, it can block and need a plunger because of the L shaped soil pipe, coupled with the litre of water that dribbles out with the water saving flush!

I NEVER EVER ever thought this would be an issue.
I have to tell guests to ''courtesy flush''- to flush twice if unloading.

Sooo annoying. Maybe happens twice a year.

eggsinonetamborine · 15/08/2023 00:06

@Ponoka7 yes 😞 I even went to Argos tonight and paid £20 for a bath pillow.. no joy 😢

I'm wondering if it's possible to move the taps to the centre. But the tap end of the bath is much less slanted than the narrow end if that makes sense so not sure if it would even be comfortable to lay against it even if the taps weren't there.

The only thing I regret about my bath is getting the taps in the centre. I have to squish over to one side when it's filling or I get red hot water on my leg!

Baths are also one of my great pleasures. I went fully decadent and got a wide whirpool bath (https://www.wholesaledomestic.com/verna-1800mm-x-900mm-12-jet-easifit-double-ended-spa-bath). Expensive but I spend bloody ages in it and worth every penny.

Sympathies OP, I'm a bath lover - it's my favourite part of the day.

It isn't helpful but from the pictures it doesn't look like it would be particularly geared towards lounging/comfort so much as it looks like a utilitarian attempt to look as though there's an option for a bath but it's mainly for the shower.

I didn't overly like the bath in our new house when we moved in a couple of years ago, felt it was a bit small and felt similar to how you describe but will say that two years later I don't notice an issue at all and am back to enjoying a long soak. Sometimes it just takes some time for things to feel normal or adapt to them when there's been a change.

oakleaffy · 15/08/2023 02:13

@eggsinonetamborine Oddly, the most comfortable 'Bath' I ever tried was in France somewhere as a kid with parents... In an ancient hotel.

One sat on a porcelain 'shelf', and water filled up to shoulder level...It really was delicious! Probably 1910 or similar age.

Just googled...they are called ''Sitz'' baths- they don't look comfy, but loved it.

The one in the hotel was very deep -

As baths mean so much to you- get a new one if you possibly can.

Hate my new bath.. I could cry..

@eggsinonetamborine This is true...I got a new mattress from John Lewis- had an awkward lie down on it in a shop, paid and left.

When it was delivered, it was SOOOO hard.

It felt like sleeping on a rock.

it hurt my hip, shoulder and ribs.

Mega googling, I found out that it ''takes two weeks'' to get used to a new mattress.

I'm lying on it now {2:16 am} and it's comfy now.

Maybe you will get used to your bath.

DiscoBeat · 15/08/2023 02:28

I get you as I struggle with our bath too for a different reason. It's vast (fine for my 6'4 husband but I just slide down and can't relax as I can't reach the end. No chance of changing it as it's Victorian and heavy and we spent over £1k renovating it but I'd love to find a way to make it more comfortable.

Mybusyday · 15/08/2023 03:25

eggsinonetamborine · 15/08/2023 00:13

@Mybusyday you haven't got used to it then? 😢 it does make me feel better to know you even tried yours and don't like it, we obviously just ordered ours online. I honestly thought a bath was a bath.. I've never been in one that's been this uncomfortable. There's just no where to rest my arms I feel wedged in like a sardine and I'm a size 14 so I'm not exactly huge.. there's no where to put my feet at the end as it's one big tap in the centre.. I just hate hate hate it 😞

Oh my gosh yes - the arm thing! Exactly this - nowhere to put my arms! I haven’t gotten used to it at all unfortunately. Sorry, I know exactly how you feel

curaçao · 15/08/2023 04:36

You will be able to get a big bathtub for less than £200 if you shop around and you and your dh will be able to swap it yourself. It is very easy
