To think Vaping is as anti-social as Cigarettes.

I'm becoming increasingly irritated by vapes, everywhere I go there are people surrounded by a cloud of sickly smelling chemicals.
At a gig this weekend every group of people had at least one vaper constantly puffing.
Why do people think its OK?
My other bug bear is the discarded disposable ones 😡

I think it's absolutely disgusting. The clouds of vapour, especially if flavoured are not pleasant. It's not the same as smoking as you aren't inhaling cancer causing tar or as many other chemicals. I'm not sure how much nicotine can be transferred passively if they contain it.
What really upsets me though is the way they are marketed and sold to children without any of the restrictions of cigarettes. Despite being the lesser of 2 evils, they are most certainly harmful. I'm sure in the future when people develop peculiar lung conditions due to the hot vapour, we won't breve how cavalier we were with access to children. The nicotine if used is obviously also incredibly damaging.

Only on MN are people walking through massive clouds of peach melba flavoured vape fumes. Back in the real world however…….

But to answer anyway, vaping is no way as horrendous as fag smoke.

Perhaps it depends where you live and who you mix with. Our school gates are basically one giant vape cloud.

manontroppo · 15/08/2023 13:18

They are fucking hideous. Horrible clouds of cheap nasty sickly sweet air "freshener" smells; hopefully we'll go the same way as Australia and ban them.

There seems to be a big increase in them lately; it's an environmental disaster.

JibbaJab · 15/08/2023 13:18

@Aworldofmyown The reason for chain vaping is because it doesn't have the same quantity of nicotine in as a cigarette. Like, some cigarettes have around 20mg in one cigarette.

Depending on the juice you could have a bottle that's 20mg but you've only got say 2ml or that bottle in the tank. So you are continuously topping up, endlessly depending on the strength. Mine for example used to be 6mg.

No, the environmental disaster is car emissions and shit dumped in our water supply.

Bluevelvetsofa · 15/08/2023 13:21

I dislike both, but accept that, at the moment, vaping is considered to be less dangerous than cigarettes. The sickly smell makes me feel ill and cigarette smoke does too.

Yeah that's a bit of a reach. Vape juice consists of:

Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin, Flavouring, and Nicotine if added.

Vegetable Glycerin is the carrier that makes the cloud. More VG, bigger clouds, more PG less clouds. That's why on bottles it says like 100/0, 70/30 or 50/50, it's the ratio which determines how smooth it is to vape and how much cloud.

FannyCann · 15/08/2023 13:28

Anyone who thinks vaping is harmless is sadly misguided. It's disgraceful that they are so easily obtained by children. The sweet sticky stuff clogs up delicate alveoli and causes lung damage just as surely as the toxins from cigarettes do.

They should be banned. It's a horrible habit.

I find vapes weirdly hilarious- grown adults look so ridiculous sucking on their little metal tube with a cloud of flavoured smoke around them. Every time I see someone with one I just get the giggles at how silly it looks. We've got to wait for the long term health impact as yet (there was a time when smoking was considered a healthy choice after all), but I do think it's rude to use one at the dinner table etc.

FannyCann · 15/08/2023 13:29

And second hand exposure is on that list - it's just as antisocial as cigarette smoking.

All the waste from disposable vapes is a huge issue though.

JibbaJab · 15/08/2023 13:31

@FannyCann Can confirm at least in my case after vaping daily for nine years, where I was careful and made my own juice, and I know of a couple of others. We eventually got wet lung.

I can now breathe easier in years now I'm smoking out it that way.

Noodge · 15/08/2023 13:32

I wouldn't say so. They can smell sickly but sickly isn't as gross as cigarette smoke. They're also not as harmful passively and don't leave butts, ash etc everywhere.

Hearmeout · 15/08/2023 13:33

CapEBarra · 15/08/2023 13:06

I can’t imagine many people care whether you find them attractive.

Thank you for your valuable input 🙄 spoken like a true unattractive vaper no doubt.

10HailMarys · 15/08/2023 13:36

It’s nowhere near as antisocial as smoking. I don’t smoke or vape, but a brief waft of sugary-smelling steam, that doesn’t contain tar and immediately dissipates, is a million times more pleasant than getting a lungful of someone’s tobacco smoke, and the vape smell doesn’t cling to clothes either. Also, public ashtrays full of fag-ends are fucking disgusting and absolutely stink.

Obviously chucking a disposable vape on the ground is antisocial, but no more so than littering the pavement with fag-ends (which can take well over a decade to break down).

Trinity65 · 15/08/2023 13:38

Hearmeout · 14/08/2023 22:10

Equally gross. Sucking away on a bit of plastic is a deeply unattractive look.

lollll

I know you're not comparing life saving medicine to vapes??????

Good, so why all the question marks?

Orangey25 · 15/08/2023 13:59

If people are using vapes to give up smoking cigarettes then why are people being so nasty about people using them "sucking on their pacifiers" etc why are you being so horrible.
There are so many self righteous idiots on this thread.

Aworldofmyown · 15/08/2023 14:12

Except people are not using it to give up, it's an alternative to most.

Because you were comparing them and that is the most stupid thing I've heard in a very very long time.

Idiotic.

What’s the difference if they’re no longer smoking cigarettes?

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 15/08/2023 14:31

Except people are not using it to give up, it's an alternative to most.

People who never smoked are using them. Children are using them.

And there can be more than one environmental disaster, and the issue of disposable vapes is one.

I think they should be banned everywhere smoking is banned, which should include at the school gates.

ChristAndHisBike · 15/08/2023 14:35

As a related aside, the 'correct' way to dispose of disposable vapes is to put them in WEEE bins at your local tip or supermarket. I believe any store over a certain size that sells electrical equipment is required to provide one.

(Sharing because I only found this out last week after forgotting my non-disposable vape and buying a Lost Mary, and then worrying about how to dispose of it safely due to the lithium battery)
